i saw andrew bird last week in brisbane, and he was incredible.
it was a really fun rocked up concert, not at all like his cds that make me want to sit and do nothing, but was still as awesome as his cds.

My college hosts quite a lot of concerts. Boris played in a room with a 150 person capacity and Mount Eerie played in a tiny one room building. Most of the shows are in a converted garage, however. I forget the name of the last band that I saw there but I do remember that at one point one of the members flipped over a congo drum, stuck a cello neck down into the cavity of the drum, and proceeded to play the cello with a conch shell and a small pair of deer antlers. I still don't know what I thought about that.

--- Quote from: Phaedra on 13 Jan 2008, 17:04 ---I saw Andrew Bird on Saturday night. I CANNOT get over how freaking awesome it was! It's a shame, but I generally find myself being disappointed by live shows - I guess my standards are too high or something, or maybe since my town is fairly isolated a lot of musicians end up bone tired by the time they get here. I always feel bad about this; the bands have put in a huge amount of effort to play for us and the tickets aren't free either...(does anyone else experience this kind of unidentified disappointment after a gig?)
Anyway, Bird just totally blew me away. I think it was pretty much the best concert I've ever attended. His voice is amazing, and his skill with the violin is even moreso; and for those who've heard his records but not seen him live, he can whistle that well live!

Andrew Bird is amazing live. His whistling is even better than on the records I think, mainly because it's louder and more piercing, it really hits you. I missed out on seeing him on the 11th (Friday night) because I was out of town. I saw him last year when he opened for Joanna Newsom and for me, he stole the show. I hadn't heard of him before that, but was an instant convert. Apparently he's not a particularly pleasant fellow, though. Yeah, I'm gonna take that back because I'm not really qualified to say anything.

I saw Caribou on Saturday night, and it was one of the dullest gigs I've been to.
I went to the gig largely on spec, because the only Caribou/Manitoba album I have is Andorra, but I like that well enough, and the gig was just up the road, so I thought "Why the hell not". Well. The songs they played from Andorra translated pretty well to the stage (it was Dan Snaith and three other people up there), but all the other songs were incredibly boring and repetitive. Obviously I don't know if that's representative of the recorded versions or not, but I'm not in a hurry now to go and find out. Worst of all, though, there was almost zero interaction with the audience. Literally. No eye-contact, and nothing at all said between songs besides "thankyou" at the applause.
I should say that there were certainly people at the gig who seemed to be really getting into it, and the band did get enough of a cheer to come and play an encore, but even that seemed touch-and-go: besides the people going off in front of the stage, all the rest of the applause at the end of the gig seemed pretty lukewarm. They had to flash the lights behind the stage to try and gee up the audience! Seriously!
D- would not see again.
