Drumset
« on: 12 Nov 2007, 12:36 »

I quit playing drums about 2 years ago and am about to start playing again. But i'm pretty sure my 150 dollar used pearl is going to cut it soundwise anymore (kinda the reason i stopped in the first place). I'm set for cymbals, just could use some set opinions. Mostly going to be playing ska and rockish stuff. I was thinking of getting a used mapex, any thoughts?

Bumps are a bad, bad idea. Wait for someone to answer when you post.

What's your budget?

Drums are basically the one rock instrument I know nothing about.

Well, I know a COUPLE things. DW are really good apparently, a lot of indie rock guys seem to like Slingerlands, the dude from Shiner had a totally bitchin' clear blue acrylic kit from the 70's. That's about it.

Ludwig makes a fine drum.  You can find them for a decent price too.

No worries. Just warning you because other people can be dicks about it.

I'm not very knowledgeable about drums either, but I know that you can get a very, very decent set-up for the amount you have to spend. These are most of your choices.

Pearl kits are the Strats of the drumming world, but my drummer's kit is fucking great. And around 800 bucks. Ludwig kits are hot shit.

Also, go and talk to someone at your local music store. And by local, I mean anything but Guitar Center/Sam Ash/other huge warehouse stores. Local music shop employees are usually ten times more knowledgeable, ten times less snarky, and usually not on commission, which makes them less likely to spend as little time helping you as possible and sell you overpriced garbage.

Johnny, Zildjian only makes cymbals, not kits.

Dude the drummer from Elliott Brood uses a motherfuckin' suitcase. Anything can produce a percussive noise like a snare or a kick, but cymbals require actual attention.

Well, "ska and rockish stuff" didn't sound avant garde enough for a suitcase or dutch oven. :-P

I've got my dad's custom set of Pearls  and Zildjians sitting in the basement. I can't play drums to save my life, though.

Yours for ehh...$1500?

My mate recently bought a Pearl pro kit or something along those lines. I don't know much in the way of drum brands and such so this is actually educational for me. I want to play the dumbes!

Yeah, Zildjian cymbals are nice.  The people who mentioned Pearl sets are right on too.  They're of fine quality.

Just don't buy electric drums!!!

Almost any drums you buy will probably be fine.  Make sure to get decent cymbals, though.  Crappy cymbals can seriously break a set.

Hahaha, two weeks ago I played a gig with this absolutely terrible industrial-metal band that had an electric drum kit.

It must be so embarrassing for them.

i play drums but admittedly, know nothing about different brands or what's "good". i can however recommend Paiste cymbals. they are extremely heavy-duty and sound quite good for not being outrageously priced.
seriously, these things could survive a direct hit from a tactical nuke; they're that sturdy.

Im set for cymbals, paiste high hat, saiban ride and some off brand crash that i like the sound of. I would like a couple of zildjan cymbals, but budget budget, trying to get as much as i can set wise. also a new stand for my crash, its currently being held up by half a stand and a drumstick.

Electric drums are almost as big a pet peeve as drum kits, which is almost as big a pet peeve as drum kits in the hands of new guitarists that cant keep a beat. grughhhhhh, its like nails on chalkboard

I'm a fairly experienced guitarist who can't play drums for shit. The other guitarist in my band, who started out on drums when he was little, showed me the basics recently. So I won't pass up an opportunity to bang on our drummer's kit loudly when we're not practicing. I'd never volunteer to play drums during a song, though, as I know I have no skills or experience yet and it'd be obnoxious.

I'm primarily a guitarist, but I've been drumming for six or so years now.  I have to say, drumming is hell of fun.

I was playing for four years before i stopped, the people i was playing with discovered the wonders of pot and being assholes, and playing drums by myself can only keep me interested for so long.

Man, that's weak. Good luck finding new bandmates. It's always cool to have other people to play with.

Man, that's weak. Good luck finding new bandmates. It's always cool to have other people to play with.

well, the full story is, i have a guitarist friend who's actually getting a set for christmas, i myself am broke and a half. Im pretty sure that he's getting it just so that we can finally play, (my pearl sounds as good as it was expensive, and picking up sticks and playing every so often got depressing, so i dont like to play it) and i cant convince him out of it

He pretty much exclusively listens to thrice, and all the weird beats they've been delving into with their recent albums sound challenging and fun to master, so i'm pretty down for that

also have another guitarist friend who exclusively listens to ska, so i can play with him when i get bored with that

now that i think about it, theres about 10 guitarists that i know that i can play with, never a shortage of em
