So, I was looking at the Flaming Lips on Wikipedia, and noticed they were classified as space rock (great definition for a genre by the way). Early Pink Floyd is apparently also a part of this genre, which leaves me the question:

Do any of you have any space rock suggestions?

I've just heard two Hawkwind songs, and I'm loving it.

You also want to acquire this:

Get the two disc version, there's a Hawkwind medley with Dave Brock on vocals on the second disk.

Basically, what we're talking about is Hawkwind, and lots of it.

Stare One are cool..but they're not space rock
i mean, the lyrics are all about space, fantasy, universe and stuff, but the Music has IMO very few in common with Space Rock

my favourite bands in that genre are the Ozric Tentacles (early Pink floyd are totally awesome too, of course)
and of course early Porcupine tree (Up The Downstair, Voyage 34 and The Sky moves sideways are some of the most beautiful pieces of music ever)

there's also a lot of very good bands sounding very similar to the ozric tentacles, including Quantum Fantay, Südstern 44, Hydiria Spacefolk and more

Seconding Hawkwind and early Porcupine Tree.

Star One isn't really 'space rock', but it's awesome so you should listen to it anyway.

Hawkwind and Parliament win the thread. But you might also check out some SikTh. But then they have elements of everything, it's just the easiest way to describe them is basically 'Space Metal.'

under the milky way, metropolis, etc.

i mean, don't get me wrong, but i'm pretty sure having space on your album cover or in your band name or album/song title does not automatically make your band space rock. i thought it had to do with delay pedals and theremin and stuff.

Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space, while having Space in the title, is pretty much definitely a space rock album. It is excellent Italian space-rocking.

Same goes for Spacemen 3 which is pretty much the same band anyway but not really

No, not a good idea. I'm going to refrain from going into detail on exactly how bad a band they are, but regardless of that Sikth are definitely not anywhere close to space rock. Spacemen 3 and Hawkwind are definitely where to start, it's amazing how fresh and undated Hawkwind still sound.

I don't think that's a necessity to be a space rock band, I've always thought of it as a sonic thing rather than to do with lyrical preoccupation. But they don't really sound much like Hawkwind, to put it mildly.

I guess if you count the word "Druganaut" then Black Mountain are disqualified but other than that they pretty much fit the bill.

How has this thread gone on for this long without any mention of Acid Mothers Temple? They're the best you can find. And they've put out at least as many records as Hawkwind, so between the two you should be good for quite a long time.

the problem about amt is that it's impossible to get an overview about their huge and totally messy discography, containing about 500 albums (tons of sideprojects included)

I still think of the Ozrics as the best space rock band

Yes, but there are plenty of bands that do have outer space references in their titles and aren't space rock, so classifying them by that doesn't really seem appropriate? (I'm trying to think of an example, but can't really come up with one).

I've gotten some Porcupine Tree(Tarquin's Seaweed Farm), and the album has been playing on repeat. It's amazing. Does sound a lot like the old Pink Floyd here and there.

They probably are a terrible recommendation for this poster, yes - I just recommend them anyway because they entertain me. I'm going to choose to pass over your 'how bad a band they are' comment, but they have elements of space rock. They have spacey middle sections, the improvisational passages (although I think they have them mostly nailed down by the time they record) the prog, the druggy haze.

I was fortunate enough to catch them at one of their rare live shows a month back, and it was incredible to say the least. Great stage presence, completely captivating, and heavy, rocking music. The concert can be streamed on the CBC Radio 3 website. Definitely a band of this genre well worth looking into.

Really excited for their new album as well.

Aww damnit, I was going to use that one.

I have the inside scoop on that album, from the mouth of Arjwen Anthony Lucasson himself.

The entire album is about various sci-fi movies Arjwen enjoys.

EG, The Eye of Ra is about Stargate (confirmed by Arjwen), and upon my own listenings, Perfect Survivor is about Alien, Master of Darkness is about Star Wars.

The rest I havn't figured out yet/I forget which is which. Point is.. it's nifty.

Rush's album 2112 is a really good space rock album, blends in quite a bit of progressive rock in there as well. If you haven't listened to it yet, you should. Early Pink Floyd is cool too (though I far prefer their material from 71-79), their songs "Interstellar Overdrive" and "Astronomy Domine" are pretty much the best examples of space rock there are.

They were always influenced by space rock, but I wouldn't say those two songs were good examples of that influence.
Their 2004 album Forget Yourself however, is basically space rock.
Also, The Church are my favourite band by far.
