Ska is pretty great in one sense.

White guys in ska bands tend to be lousy in bed. Their girlfriends are easy targets when they grow out of ska a month later.

A little while back I was at a squat party and some tasty dubstep was being played. Naturally I proceeded to engage in my regular incompetent dancing, but shortly the music changed to ska and reggae. Strangely, I continued to dance. I felt very peculiar afterwards, like I wasn't sure exactly who I was anymore. I mean.. ska. It's just not quite right.

'The Harder They Come' was a good film though.

Man, I'm all about The Ska. All waves, even some of the real old stuff. Everything, I got local ska, foreign ska, nofx ska, ska covers, I even have a checkerboard belt and checkerboard curtains. How much more ska can you get? I have an entire mp3 player devoted to ska music. I make it happen. Thats how much I love ska.

Ever since high school when my friends found pot and turned into ska kids overnight, I have loathed this music. ALL OF IT. There is NOTHING GOOD ABOUT SKA that isn't surpassed in...goodness....by other genres.

(Also yes these threads really need to go away. Streetlight Reel Big Fish Planet Smashers Aquabats now get out.)

I don't understand the animosity toward ska, I don't go into the indie music threads and go "GOD, could there be more of these indie threads on here? I hate indie music, it sucks!" This is because I like most musics and bands (not too big on the country though), but regardless, its just music that people like. Also, it'd be real nice if there was reason for the hate. "Ska made me hate horn music because all I heard was crappy ska" I've gotten far too much "ska sucks, this music is better" in my time. Far too much.

"Ska" is much more specific than "indie."  It's like you're not understanding why I hate squash but like a ton of other vegetables.

You know, the ska fans are right. I leave it alone when people are gushing over tedious bullshit like Arcade Fire or Radiohead and really, those bands are worse than most ska. At least ska makes people happy and dance. So, sorry ska fans. And actually I went and found the Propagumbhis website the other night and realised Meat Free Anthem is still a proper tune.

"Ska" is much more specific than "indie."  It's like you're not understanding why I hate squash, but like a ton of other vegetables.

Ah, but therein lies the semantics. I would say music as a whole would be like the vegetables, whereas ska is squash, there are many kinds of squash, butternut, acorn, hubbard, etc. I always classify indie the same way as ska, it has a sort of sound to it, yes there's different styles, but pretty much I can go, "alright, this is probably something indie, but what kind of indie?" just from hearing it, same as I can go "alright, this is ska, but what kind of ska is it?"

I have a lot of very good ska bands, but there are also a lot of shitty ska bands that came out when ska was popular the second time, and I generally dislike some of the bigger name ska bands just because its not the style that I enjoy. I'd be willing to toss out a bunch of ska to anyone that was curious about it, and if you don't like it, well, that's your opinion, I didn't like a lot of bands for the longest time because of what I thought they were, and how they sounded. Years later, I listened to them, or offshoots of them, and realized that I did like the music after all, and that just because I was a ska-kid, that didn't mean I couldn't like metal, rockabilly, or indie.
I think the big thing is not to just flat out say "oh I hate ska" but rather take it from a "well, I dislike this band, but this other band of the same genre is pretty good" stance.

Fortunately for you, tommy, some lovely souls have taken a bunch of old Jamaican reggae and ska records, put them on the record player, videoed them going round and round, and put the results on YouTube:

"The Israelites"

"007 (Shanty Town)"

"Sabotage"

"Pickney Girl"

Enjoy!

Desmond Dekker does make some fine music.

I feel honour bound to point out that, whilst I am in fact defending ska from thoughtless hate, Pretty much all the modern, 3rd wave stuff sucks. I'm not sure I've ever heard a good ska song written past the mid 80's, and some of those bands are utter turd.

Yeah, I used to hate ska pretty passionately, mainly because my exposure was awful local ska bands and the ska bits on Hellcat records compilations. Then I listened to the real stuff after I had started getting into dub, and I dug it.

Ska, like all genres, is populated mostly by terrible bands. Even the good bands have terrible songs and weird quirks and idiosyncrasies that will turn people off. But this is true of all music, and indeed of all things.

Ska (or, rather, third-wave ska, which is what most people are familiar with) is the only genre, however, in which, conceivably, a band called Commander Squashpants and the Skammodores could write a song about the Kool Aid Man skanking to ska music.  I think this is why ska causes such a violent, gut-level reaction in people.

I like how this post starts off by saying something, but in the end turns out to say nothing.

I like ska, in moderation. I was a bit into the underage ska scene here in Melbourne for a brief period. Skanking is lots of fun. What I like listening to, mostly 2nd wave stuff (Specials are great), haven't heard much 1st wave. I like a bit of 3rd wave (Operation Ivy), but not much.
