Word. I happen to have a really nice Epiphone, but I know from experience that the vast majority of them are shit. Check out Schecter, and like Jeph mentioned, ESP.

I second checking out Schecter.  The S-1s are very nice.  They play like a Les Paul or an SG, but are more affordable.  I thought about picking up an S-1 in Ivory for about $500, but decided I want a Jazzmaster.
