So I saw Dinosaur Jr. last night.
« on: 30 Nov 2007, 12:53 »

It was better than I expected.  Still nothing mindblowing.  J Mascis looked half-asleep even when he was laying down heavy guitar shred.  Lou Barlow was animated and rocked the house.  J kept scowling at Lou, sometimes between songs like "Are you ready to play the song yet, jerkface?" and sometimes during the songs as if to say "Stop making me look like an old man with your jumping around and getting into it and non-grey hair".

They only played just over an hour, including encore, which I thought was a bit of a piss-take for a show that was totally packed (though 90% of the crowd clearly had no idea who Dinosaur Jr. was; the show was at a new venue and they basically gave away around 300 tickets for free so there were a fuckton of 18-19 year old Scene Kids just sort of hanging out hoping someone would buy them a beer).

Also, LOL @ lame two-song encore, second song of which was "Just Like Heaven".

All in all, I'd much rather have seen Sebadoh, because they were always so much better than Dino Jr., but it did rock pretty well for a milking-it reunion deal.  Much better than the Pixies reunion shows.

Also, their new t-shirts are fucking rad.

I dunno how much "milking it" is motivation for the tour. The new album is fucking ace.

Frankly, I think they milked a whole career off one really incredible album.

I'll bet the new album is 'okay', in the same way everything not YLAOM was 'okay'.

My sentiments exactly.

Sorry to change the subject, but the short encore thing pisses me off too.  I saw Iron & Wine the other night, and he only played one song for the encore.  It was a damn good one song, but it's a lot of clapping and yelling to get someone out for one song.

Why does every single band have to do an encore?

If a band plays a crappy set, I'd much rather they not do an encore at all.  Hasn't happened much in my experience, though.

I'd much rather the band not schedule the encore into the show, and just finish the show normally.

Also, crowds always seem to demand encores regardless of the quality of the show.

I have played one encore. We were still on the stage taking our shit down when they started asking for one more song.

We played Weezer's "Keep Fishin'." Since this was me and my brother as Danger Bros., it was drum and bass only.

I am pretty sure this is how an encore should be handled. It felt awesome.

I'd still pay a pretty decent amount of money to see them live.

I'm still convinced that it would be totally worth it. Speaking of which, how much did you pay? Or were you one of the lucky ones who got a free ticket?

I'm pretty sure that almost literally nobody paid to get in.  The venue holds probably 500-600 people, I know for certain that around 300 free tickets were obtained, and I heard a few people in line to get in say that "The show is free whether you have a ticket or not."

Rumor has it that this is because ticket sales were bad at first, when the show was booked at a smaller venue owned by the same people, so they switched the show over to the "Grand Opening Night!!!!" of the new venue thinking that a lot of people would show up just because it's a new venue.

They were apparently right.  Like I said, seriously 90% of the crowd clearly had no clue who the band was, and about half of them were 18 year old Scene Chicks looking kind of bored.

I would probably pay to see them live, then ignore the stage completely, because I would be too engrossed in my own world.

Making me coming to the show a bit useless.

I really like their new album.

Nobody is obligated to give you an encore. I have this JoA bootleg, after the last song in a very short set the entire audience is  screaming "ENCORE! ENCOOOOOOOOOORE!"
Everything goes a little quiet you Tim Kinsella calls out "Encores are boring!" and then the bootleg ends.

Most bands I've seen play for at least an hour, then play a 30 minute or so encore.  The Polyphonic Spree played 3 encores earlier this year because people really just wanted more.

So, speaking as a musician myself, in that sense, the "encore" is functional because you've been standing on stage molesting a guitar (or hammering on drums or whatever) for an hour or more.  Lots of bands drink beer while they're playing, or water.  After an hour, you probably need to take a piss, or wipe the sweat off and cool down a bit, or smoke a little weed, or whatever.  It's just nice to take a break.

Since everything that involves the band leaving the stage and then coming back is generally called an "encore", unless the band specifically bills that they'll be "playing two sets" (which almost never happens), it's silly to complain about all encores since, in my experience, a large majority of them are actually "set breaks".

I love encores. Sure they are kind of pointless and maybe the band should just stay on stage and play some more stuff, but generally the little break towards the end makes the show seem longer.

I love Tim Kinsella.  Sure, he's a shitty singer, but I love everything he has anything to do with.  Except The Promise Ring.  I can't seem to get into them.

Anywho, I would pay to see Dinosaur Jr.  Despite his lack of energy live, J Mascis is one of my guitar gods.

Nope, Knoxville TN.  The Athens show was probably the night before or after, and I'm too lazy to bother looking it up right now.

On the topic of encores, I like them a lot but I can understand why certain bands wouldn't do them. Take Explosions in the Sky for example. Their sets are continuous (i.e. no song breaks of stopping for applause during their hour-ish sets. All the songs have transitional pieces to connect them). They never play encores b/c, by their rationale, they've put all they have into the set and it doesn't feel right for their continuous set to end and for them to leave only for them to start again with some other stuff. I can understand that completely. Same deal with bands like Mono and a couple others. The sets seem so draining that I can't imagine performing encores if I was in one of those bands.
More on topic: I like Owls and some other Kinsella bands but I could never love any of them. His voice is just a little bit too...off.
I saw Dinosaur Jr. perform on some late night talk show (Conan maybe?) recently. They were awful.

Talk show performances can be decieving, as I saw Art Brut on a talk show and thought they were total shit.

Now that I've listened to them more, I know that they're only 50% shit.

I guess you could have been more wrong here and gone with a higher percentage of shit, but it wouldn't have been as snappy so I guess I can respect that.

Shame how incredibly wrong you are though.

Of the six Art Brut songs I have heard, three are on my "loved tracks" list on last.fm (two are live tracks).

The other three seriously sound like Franz Ferdinand.  I think the band, or at least the singer, have their hearts in the right place but it appears that some producer or record executive has decided to make them sound "less like The Fall or Pulp and more like the Arctic Monkeys" or something.

I saw them Friday night in Asheville.  I thought it was a great show.  The opening acts were pretty good, always a nice bonus.  The Labiators, nice mountain folk, and Awesome Color.

My ears are still ringing, though.

I saw them in Athens, Ga a few days ago and I thought that they were very lackluster.  Murph and Lou were going off but Mascis was just acting bored.  I got the vibe he wasn't there because he wanted to be there.  They played the songs well but I was just a little dissappointed.

Basically every video clip I've seen of J. where he isn't playing, he looks incredibly disoriented and isn't quite sure why he's there.

Proof (plus it's just an awesome video)

you know in the end the musician's get to do what they want to do, if they want to play one song then they play one song, your just in for the ride, dont' complain man, encores itself aren't something they are obligated to do anyways so be happyw ith what you get

On the other hand, the best encores I've ever seen were these:

1. Wilco - They basically came back, played twenty more minutes, then left the stage. To thunderous applause, they returned a second time, playing an additional twenty-five minutes. This was after an already hour-plus set. The crowd wanted more and Wilco delivered to a point of utter satisfaction. Though I would have loved for them to basically never stop playing, I was extraordinarily pleased by what they gave.

2. The Sadies - The Sadies hadn't planned an encore, I'm ninety percent sure of it. You don't play a song like "Tiger, Tiger" if you're planning on coming back. The audience response moved them back onto the stage, at which point Dallas Good informed us that we'd been a real good crowd and that they could probably play three more. One audience member yelled, "Ten more!" At his behest, Dallas bumped the number up to six more.

3. The Constantines - Played two songs, one of which was an absolutely incendiary cover of "Thunderstruck." More importantly, they did it after maybe thirty, forty-five seconds of cheering.

4. The Arcade Fire - Finished with "Rebellion (Lies)" and then left the stage. The audience was still way too busy singing. They had to actually wait for the melody to start dying down a little before they came out and played a couple of songs for an encore. The real kicker, though, was that they ended with "In The Backseat" and then brought it out into the crowd. Nothing like wandering through a group of people pouring out their heart to an endless repetition of the final few bars of one of your songs, I'd imagine.

Really, there are two or three things that should happen with an encore. First, let the crowd dictate whether or not there's an encore. Be prepared for one but if it's more a matter of obligation than a matter of the crowd wanting it, just let them go - and trust me, you'll know within seconds whether or not a crowd wants an encore so don't be a dick and just get out there. Second, make sure the songs you pick are absolutely worth people staying. Third, if the crowd really wants more, don't just play one or two songs and then go home. Jesus, they're loving everything you do, it'll probably be a total joy to play. If it's a chore for you to do encores or play more than two songs when an entire crowd is eating out of your palm then you've possibly chosen the wrong career path.

The Arcade Fire show I was at had an amazing encore as well. They played an hour and a half. Then they went off stage. A deafening call erupted from the crowd calling them back and lasted nearly ten minutes. Then they finally returned and played another half hour, really pouring their hearts out.

Then after the show they stopped at one of the sponsor tents set up at Randall's Island (big outdoor venue) and did a cover of the Violent Femmes' Kiss Off using a resonator guitar and a megaphone.

No, that wasn't it at all.  He didn't look disoriented (at least in an amiable way).  He looked like he was just really bored with everything about Dinosaur Jr.
