I figured we could use an overall Photoshop thread. Use this space to ask for help and tips/tricks etc. Post interesting techniques you use or just show off your stuff. I suppose Gimp could also be included in this thread because it's pretty popular around here, i think.

I'll start it off, i suppose:

I've been using using Photoshop 7 since it came out. I have yet to upgrade to a more recent version although i probably should.
So my question is; should i try to pirate a newer version of Photoshop or should i just get Gimp? How hard is Gimp to use after being completely indoctrinated in Photoshop? Is it easy to use? Is it better? Worse?

Don't know about GIMP, but I have a trial of Photoshop CS3 and I like it. (I'm more familiar with CS.) CS and CS3 are far better than 7, I will say that.

I use CS but there is nothing at all wrong with 7. What do you use it for?

i mostly just use it for fun to kill time at work but lately i have been using it to tweak my photos as well since i no longer have access to a darkroom and have started shooting digitally.

The healing brush tool is my new bestest best buddy pal friend thing.

Especially when working with photos taken by people who don't fucking know how to clean their lens before taking pictures.

yes, it is extremely useful.

also; i downloaded GIMP on my home computer last night. i messed around with it for a while; found it very bizarre after being so used to photoshop. i can see how it could be superior in the long run what with it being free and all. not to mention how customizable it is. i just don't have the patience to learn a new program right now.

I havn't even upgraded myself from Photoshop 6 yet.  I had to use 7 for my multimedia course.  It confused me alot, because I like living in the dark ages!

My CS3 warns me that I don't have enough power to run it.

It works fine, though. Even when running der interwubs at the same time.

I've got 6 on my desktop, and CS2 on my laptop, lol.

As much as the dark ages rocked, though, I don't know how I manage on my desktop without the healing brush. I mean, I can do all of the stuff I can do with the healing brush with the clone stamp, but it just takes SO much longer.

On the other hand, I know people in classes I've taken who don't EVER use the clone stamp because they've got the healing brush to work with, and all of their work ends up looking fake and textureless.

In the same way that the healing brush does stuff the clone stamp usually took hours to do in a few minutes, healing brush alone only half solves the problems that come up. Everything in moderation.  :-)

this is probably the most obvious statement of the year but i've found that using the Clone Stamp and Healing Brush together is really where it's at.
use the clone stamp to duplicate a color/texture and then use the healing brush to clean it up and blend it all together to make it appear seamless.

If you have a deviantart account, look there. If not, make one, and then look there. People post all sorts of stock photos on there and are free. (You may need to ask permission or credit them if you plan on showing it to other people or whatever, but the artist says so in the comments if they want you to.)

http://www.sxc.hu/ has a pretty good selection of stock photography. 

Edit: I just checked and for personal use it would appear that all of the photography is free to use.  If you are going to use it professionally, they ask that you contact that submitted the image.
