Neither really. Popularity has nothing to do with quality. Though if you don't have Dark Side of the Moon in some form, then you're missing out, it's probably the only perfect album ever recorded (except for Abbey Road). Sgt. Pepper's is a good album too, though it always bugs me that it's the album that gets recognition out of everything the Beatles made, when several of their albums were much better. The rest of the albums on that list (the 30 Million + one) range from shit to only slightly above average, though, not counting compilations (which don't count).

At a quick glance, there are maybe a dozen or so "really great" albums on those lists, and maybe a dozen more "pretty good, should be listened to for historical context at least".

Are you suggesting that Godspeed You! Black Emperor is a popular band? Because while they may be well-known among the scene, their lack of mainstream recognition prohibits them from being called "popular."

I'm not saying that popular = shit or that unknown = Jesuslike, I'm just saying that there are great bands both popular and unpopular and shitty bands both popular and unpopular. To pretend that all popular bands are terrible would imply that popularity is inversely related to quality, whereas I suggest there is no correlation. But no philosophonomics for now.

Automatic for the People was on that list? Damn, must've missed it. Also one of my favorites.

Yes, I am. Everyone who likes post-rock likes them, or has heard them, and even a whole lot of people who barely know what post-rock is have heard them. They're as popular as a band of their genre could possibly be.

But that's the point, here. The "pop music scene" is bigger than the "post-rock scene" and therefore pop music sells more records. It doesn't mean that what you or I think of as "bad" popular music is "bad" because people don't buy albums unless they enjoy them, and if 50 million people enjoy an album, it can not logically be "bad" because those 50 million people think it's "good" and musical taste is not a science in which one can "prove" a band is good or not.

And I'm just saying that if a band sells 50 million albums, they are not "shitty" in any kind of objective way. Do I like The Eagles? No. But clearly they are doing something right for a lot of people. Would most people in America like Neutral Milk Hotel? Incredibly doubtful. Millions of people would listen to Neutral Milk Hotel and say "Wow, that is one shitty band."

I would not presume to tell them I'm right and they're wrong because my taste is somehow better than theirs.

Some people claim to genuinely enjoy the taste of brocolli. I can't fathom this, but I would not use it as evidence that they have defective or inferior taste buds.

Actually, I've played Neutral Milk Hotel for a number of poster Hot Topic kids and they all loved it. It's just a matter of exposure in many cases.

Basically what I'm saying is that "poster Hot Topic kid" isn't actually that far away in the Taste Spectrum from "poster indie kid".

It's a pretty darn good pop album.

Often, radio stations played the customized and single versions in rotation

Mostly what I disagree with in that post is the assertion that The Eagles aren't a heap of shit.

HOWEVER it is kind of rude to tell that to the face of an Eagles fan or act like you're better than someone just cause they like The Eagles. If you want to put that fifty million statistic to good use, then the likelihood is that a good chunk of those fifty million people who bought that greatest hits compilation aren't douchebags and it'd be wrong to automatically treat them as such.

For The Eagles to not suck, you'd have to have a more compelling argument than "a lot of people like them," because that actually has nothing to do with whether they suck or not. That's the basis of the fallacy.

I'm not saying that The Eagles are good because 50 million people like them. I'm saying that there is no way to say whether they are good or not at all, but if they make 50 million people happy, they are doing something right. To claim otherwise is to be a hipster snob.

The Christian thing is a great example of why you're shooting yourself in the foot. Your implication is that what I'm saying equates to "If 50 million people believe God exists, then he must". That's not what I'm saying. I'm not speaking in terms of objective reality. I don't believe in objective reality, and I certainly don't believe in it for the purposes of art. What I'm saying would be more akin to "If 50 million people believe God exists, that belief must be doing something for them".

No matter how much I think, believe or feel that The Eagles suck, I can't say that they actually do because it's a matter of opinion and clearly a lot of people think The Eagles don't suck and I have no basis for, or inclination toward, telling them that they're "wrong".

Pretty much!

I would argue that the fact that the Eagles best-selling release is a best-of is not a particular endorsement. In fact, when you correlate the success of this release and the success of Hotel California, which has sold about 27 million copies, what I think we are actually seeing is that a hell of a lot of people listen to classic rock radio. With the best-of, I think it's likely to be a sort of self-sustaining effect. It's popularity ensures that it is widely available, and in turn it is probably bought a lot pretty much for specific songs as opposed to the albums they originally came from. At the end of the day, it's not so much that fifty million people like the Eagles, it's that up to* fifty million people thought 'Tequila Sunrise' was a good song.

*Maybe much less than fifty million. Remember that both the best-of and Hotel California were originally released on vinyl. Similiarly with almost all the best-selling albums: Thriller, Back in Black, Dark Side of the Moon, and so forth. You've got to account for re-buying on CD. Trying to calculate ownership statistics for albums released before the advent of CDs is impossible as, theoretically, individual purchases and ownership could differ by up to 50%. Of course, replacement copies and so forth must always be taken into account...what this means, at the end of the day, is that more people are likely to own The Bodyguard Soundtrack or Millenium by the Backstreet boys than any given release by The Eagles, The Beatles, Pink Floyd etc.
