Actually, I've played Neutral Milk Hotel for a number of poster Hot Topic kids and they all loved it. It's just a matter of exposure in many cases.

Sure, that figures into it.  But I didn't say "play Neutral Milk Hotel for poster Hot Topic kids".  Try playing Neutral Milk hotel to the millions of mainstream rap fans.  Try playing them fans of 80s metal.  Try playing them for 12 year old girls who listen to boy bands.

Basically what I'm saying is that "poster Hot Topic kid" isn't actually that far away in the Taste Spectrum from "poster indie kid".
