I'm actually kind of surprised there isn't already some great prominent mention of "HOLY SHIT A NEW PORTISHEAD ALBUM OMG OMG etc." so I'm making it my job. 10 years after their last album, finally we will be graced with more Portishead. Super-pumped am I.

And it's probably going to happen anyway, so everybody go ahead and discuss random things related to trip-hop.

It says April 2008 on their website, and it also says they'll be performing some of the new material this weekend which should be interesting. I hope it holds up next to the old stuff.

I wonder if it'll be as good as Dummy. I'm worried they'll shy away from stuff that sounds like trip-hop, but trip-hop is really the only genre they'll probably do really great at.

This is true. At the same time, I don't imagine them sitting down together before recording and saying "Okay guys, what we're going to do is out-gypsy Gogol Bordello." What I mean is, whatever departure from their previous style that happens on the new record, I can't imagine it'll be all that dramatic.

Seriously, I like Portishead a lot, but I haven't been excited about a trip hop album since the late 90s. I had no idea so many people still cared.

Sorry if I come off as elitist, I'm just...surprised.

It is a little surprising that all these 90's bands (most of which I had only got into in the last year or so) are reuniting. Off the top of my head: Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against The Machine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Portishead, and in some ways Radiohead and Daft Punk feel "retro." But I think the amount of buzz shows that people don't forget you just 'cause you aren't the latest indie discovery or something, which is kind of reassuring.

And when it comes to Portishead, I think Dummy is such a timeless album, it's no surprise that people are excited. I definitely am.

I don't find it that surprising. There's downtempo music with a similar feel coming out at the moment, and it's quite popular. Burial is a prime example.

I thought their first album was much better than the second, but I'm still excited about this one. I haven't a clue what it will sound like, but I see their influence in a lot of newer bands... so it should be interesting

The new stuff sounds great. They played a couple of songs that sounded pretty similar in style to the old material and ended with one that had quite a thumping beat. Something of a departure for them but on the whole it's business as usual as you may well expect. What I found most interesting about their set was just how heavy they could get when they wanted to, I'd thought they wouldn't fit in too well with all the stoner and drone at this year's ATP and I'd been thinking having so many of those bands was an odd choice, but it actually made perfect sense after seeing them. They were also possibly the only band at the entire festival who didn't have shite sound thankfully. The only question now is, can they make something that works live sound good on record?

There are a handful of great trip-hop albums, and then nothing else. It'd be nice to see another great album added to the canon.

No reason Portishead should be limited to just doing trip-hop, though. Have you heard PJ Harvey's new album? It sounds absolutely nothing like anything else she's done.

First of all, I'm super jealous of you. I saw that "angry" song they played on YouTube, very percussion-y! There are some moments on the second album that are kinda harsh, but that was definitely a new level. Whom else did you see? Aphex Twin, I hope?

I don't even understand why people want more Wu Tang albums. You don't need any more. Just listen to 36 Chambers over and over again. It can't be topped.

Also, yes, Dummy is way better, and admittedly the new songs on Youtube sound kind of a lot different from old Portishead. My feelings about the prospective new album are now more curious than blind "holycrapholycrap!"

i have high expectations for the new portishead album, why? cuz 10 years is a long time to get things right before they release an album, they've had alot of time to work out the kinks and i think things will be good, be optomistic people especialy since portishead is so awsum

Does Air count? If so, it seems like Moon Safari should be pretty major. I'm not sure Bjork actually counts as "trip-hop" (although it never seemed like trip hop was all that clearly defined) although all the same people who were really into trip-hop years ago seemed to love her, perhaps Post especially. As far as DJ Shadow goes, I actually really like The Private Press, although that's more recent and not as obviously monumental as Endtroducing¹. Lamb is worth seriously mentioning I think, although partly because of a single song's immense success (Gorecki) -- they have other good and relatively popular stuff too. I guess the same sort of thing goes for all the other bands you've mentioned as well. I keep looking through my playlist going "Wait, there's got to be more," but all I've got is a bunch of lesser known bands probably none of you really care about (e.g. Halou). Basically the really heavy-hitters in 90s trip-hop were Massive Attack (Tricky included) and Portishead, maybe with DJ Shadow if you want to include him under the "trip-hop" heading, and everyone else just sort of filled in the spaces.

1 -- Recently, I started listening to Endtroducing again, and felt really old. I remember buying it not long after it originally came out, and thinking that it sounded just amazing and very edgy and new. It still sounds great, but I switched over to Prefuse 73 right afterwards and man, it sounded a little dated in comparison, which is of course partly because Endtroducing is over a decade old now. Ack.

Edit: Hey, does anyone remember that band Mono? They had that one album, Formica Blues, that seemed to be practically everywhere (at least to me?) circa 1998.

I'd say that all three are pretty equally good, for different reasons. This here new one has quite a different feel, musically, than anything they've done before. Did they fire the turntablist? Because he was really great, especially on the second album. I saw them live and it was just insane how perfectly tight their playing was, especially the DJ.

When I saw them the turntablist was still there but he was playing percussion as well and using other instruments more than the decks, so I think he's just shifted role a little.

Ah trip hop. A bullshit label concocted by British journalists to make downtempo electronica palatable to a mainstream audience that thought everything electronic had to sound like Kraftwerk. Never had any coherence, and never will. All the artists labeled so went on to do other stuff because they were never really doing trip hop in the first place.

But if you want to find catchy downtempo electronica mostly with vocals, you could do worse then check out:

-- The Verve Remixed album
-- DJ Krush (particularly Meiso -- on Mo' Wax)
-- UNKLE (particularly Psyence Fiction -- also on Mo'Wax)
-- De Phazz (particularly Death by Chocolate)
-- Orbital (particularly the Blue Album)
-- Supreme Beings of Leisure (ah, Golddigger, the Crazy of 1998)

I love the Verve Remixed stuff. I've downloaded about a dozen songs total from the three albums in that series.

The only UNKLE I know is their latest, War Stories. I reviewed it for my job.

I already asked my boss if I could review Third for the site. She hasn't gotten back to me yet, but considering that I emailed her after 5pm her time and it isn't 9am yet in Cali that's not surprising.

I was hoping to get my advance copy that way, but if it's already out on the intarwebbs I might just wait to buy the physical album.

Call me old-fashioned, but I like to buy the actual CD and own it. I like looking at the album art, reading the liner notes, finding out who played what instruments on what tracks... That stuff interests me.
