Bad Songs on Your Favorite Albums of 2007
« on: 07 Dec 2007, 03:49 »

What were the songs from this year that you found appalling?  What made them bad/disappointing?  I'm thinking more along the lines of songs from artists you expect more from and less the typical chart rap/alt-rock/pseudo-emo crap.

I'm going to go with an obvious choice, "The Party" (or "Tthhee Ppaarrttyy")  by Justice.  Sure there's Uffie, but it is less the awful vocals themselves that make me dislike this song and more so the way it totally throws off the flow of the album.  The first time I heard †, I was rocking out in my seat and then Uffie kicked me in the crotch.  I mean the robots would never let someone perform some weak rap over their...

But seriously, what songs gave you a similar feeling?

Edit:  Changed the topic title to something closer to what I meant.

I hate threads like this, simply because there were literally dozens of terrible songs released this past year.

I'd be here for hours if I was to list them all.

I don't like these threads cause someone is bound to read them and discover their favourite song of the year on it. And though I'm sure they'll get over it, it's never a good feeling.

What I meant was more along the lines of disappointing '07 songs from albums you otherwise enjoyed. Obviously, there were a lot of really bad songs from 2007.  I guess it was meant more as a "this album would have been even better if this song was left off or if had done this instead of that."  Sorry, if I wasn't clear.

"Antichrist Television Blues" and the reworked "No Cars Go" on Neon Bible.
"Lice in the Rainbow" off of White Williams' Smoke.
"Honey Honey" from Feist's the Reminder.

Other than those, I can't think of much. My favourite albums tend to be my favourite because they're solid front to back. I don't actually like Neon Bible all that much for that reason; two weak tracks are enough to turn me off.

And for the record, I love The Party. At first I was pretty ambivalent about it, just another song on a great album....and then I caught my jock little brother freaking out and dancing to it. I did not realize how much of my music he had jacked, how much he liked it, and how much of a little hipster he'd become (I hadn't seen him in four months). It warmed the cold, dark recesses of my heart.

Without that experience though...I can see people not liking it so whatever. It's cool. Folk on the internet need to calm the fuck down about other people's proclamations about loved/hated music. Ideally, that sort of conflict would turn into a good discussion of the merit or lack thereof of said music, leaving both participants with some new ideas...but alas. It's still the internet. Not going to happen.

That's possibly the only TL/Rx song I ever skip over. "A Bottle Of Buckie" and "Who Do You Love" really make up for it, though.

It doesn't sound anywhere even remotely close to System of a Down.  I'm going to have to disagree with you here.  It's not a bad song by any means.

Off the new Buck 65 album, the song "Benz" is just irritating. It doesn't work. Even when many of the other songs don't fit into the album's concept, it doesn't work. Blah.

heh, i dug "neon bible". it's still on my playlist...
i'd go with "my body is a cage".

i guess if i had to pick, from pop artists i trust, since i'm not too picky:

MIA "the turn" and "come around" on KALA
Radiohead "faust harp" on In Rainbows (actually, i kinda can do without 1/3 of that album)
Bjork "wanderlust" on Volta. bjork fans seem to love this track most; i dont get why. it actually makes me wince.

cant think of more. lots of solid work came out recently.
i guess Klaxons, Battles, and Black Kids' albums dont qualify since they're new? i <3 them all, but they all had at least one track i could do without... but only if i were super duper picky pickles.

I didn't like Neon-Bible that much. In my books, Funeral was a million times better...

l can't quite put my finger on exactly what I disliked... But, I do know that I never really like a religious theme... Whether it be anti-religion or pro-religion, I prefer to keep my music completely apathetic to religion.

Still a pretty good album in my opinion, but pales in comparison to Funeral!

Funeral, Neon Bible and their s/t EP are structured, as an album, in the same way.

Note that I didn't point out a valid reason for not liking Neon Bible... I basically just said that for some reason I liked Funeral a lot more, and thus, was a bit disappointed. Otherwise still a decent album.

l can't quite put my finger on exactly what I disliked...

I don't care if you want to eviscerate ska with a rusty spoon, Streetlight Manifesto's Somewhere In The Between was glorious, though "Forty Days" didn't quite do it for me.
"Alcohol" off of Gogol Bordello's "Super Taranta!" was pretty weak as well.

I'm going to respond to the thread title instead of just listing bad songs.  Listing bad songs on good albums is far more interesting than just tossing out any annoying song you heard on the radio.

Robert Wyatt:  Just As You Are (On Comicopera)
Miranda Lambert - Everybody Dies Famous In A Small Town (On Crazy Ex Girlfriend)
White Stripes - Conquest (On Icky Thump)
White Stripes - The one where him and Meg are pretty much just talking, saying stuff like 'Wow, look at all this stuff!' where it's unclear what the point is except that you can tell it's really pretentious (On Icky Thump)
Lilly Allen - Window Shopper (On Alright, Still)
Arcade Fire - "Look at me, I'm Bruce Springsteen!" or Antichrist Television Blues (On Neon Bible)

And the award for worst song on a good album of all time:
A tie between
O-Bla-Di by the Beatles
Blood Money by Primal Scream

I can't speak for mobius, but I don't necessarily see anything wrong with it, it just didn't feel like it belonged on Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. If anything, I think it would have fared far better in my mind on the bonus disc (Get Nice!).

I was mostly agreeing with the opinion on "Antichrist Television Blues," though.

Also, whoever put down "My Body Is a Cage" clearly hasn't bothered to play it full volume in a dorm room with the door open and sing along as heart-felt as possible with a handful of other guys while getting incredulous looks from the Dashboard-loving jock-wanna-bes who pass by. That, more than anything, makes the song worth keeping for me.

Actually, when it comes to the new Arcade Fire album, my least favorite song must be Intervention. Then again, the album didn't really elicit any kind of reaction from me anyway. It's fun to listen to, but it fell kind've short in recording. Live the songs take on a whole new life, although Les Savy Fav were still the highlight of that show, standing next to LCD Soundsystem and Blonde Redhead in a nice second.

It's been growing on me, but "Return To Melanesia" from The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets' The Shadow Out of Tim is a track I usually skip over. It's a damn good album, but I really don't see much need for an a capella track just thrown in there. Though, like I said, it has been growing on me nonetheless.

Gallows - Orchestra Of Wolves - Stay Cold - It's just not very interesting and hard to distinguish from any other band, whereas the rest of the album isn't like that.
Fountains Of Wayne - Traffic And Weather - Fire In The Canyon - Kinda a boring country-ish song that's just a bit shit on an album of soaring power-pop.
Jamie T - Panic Prevention - Pacemaker - The least tuneful song on the record where his vocals get a bit painful to listen to in places.

Black Wave/Bad Vibrations - Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

I loved the rest of the album, but this song struck me as undeniably repetitive and emo (not even their usual caliber of depressed-but-not-depressing music, but crap-emo!)

I really enjoyed the new Okkervil River album. In some ways it reminds me of Neon Bible. Not that they sound similar, mind you, but simply b/c it's a very good album that pales compared to much of the band's earlier work. That being said I still like "Stage Names" quite a lot. Sadly, the song "Savannah Smiles" is awful. I'm talking pretty much unlistenable. I skip this song without fail every time it comes on. It's far and away the worst Okkervil River song and it even lessens my overall impressions of the album as a whole.

Arcade Fire - "Look at me, I'm Bruce Springsteen!" or Antichrist Television Blues (On Neon Bible)

Yes yes yes.

I'd also like to add:
Deerhoof- Look Away- It's long and pointless.  I always end the album after "Matchbook Seeks Maniac".
Modest Mouse- Little Motel- This sounds like Modest Mouse trying to be Coldplay.  No one should ever try to be Coldplay.
The National- Racing Like A Pro- I don't know why, but I find something about this song immensely irritating.
Panda Bear- The beginning of Good Girl/Carrots-  What the hell is this?
Wilco- Please Be Patient With Me- Jeff Tweedy's voice sounds terrible on this one.  What happened?

White Stripes - The one where him and Meg are pretty much just talking, saying stuff like 'Wow, look at all this stuff!' where it's unclear what the point is except that you can tell it's really pretentious (On Icky Thump)

"RAG AND BONE"

FUCK YOU I LOVE THAT SONG

You're not the only one.  Easily the best song on Icky Thump, it's hilarious.

Deerhoof- Look Away- It's long and pointless.  I always end the album after "Matchbook Seeks Maniac".

I get the feeling you have not listened to much of their early material

Since half of it is pretty much "Look Away"

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

Oh, and I'm really surprised with the amount of people who've dissed on all sorts of Neon Bible songs that no one's mentioned "Windowsill."  Absolutely abysmal 'political' lyrics that white college kids will cheer for.
