Yeah, Gabbly loaded, but it seemed empty, but I think it was more a bug because not even my own name was in the list.

It does two things when I try: Sometimes is says the connection is broken and I need to refresh OR it loads, the list is blank (even my name isn't on it), and no one is there. I am using Firefox, so I could try other browsers, but I still don't know if it'd work.

Just started working for me, though it's just ledhendrix in there and he don't seem very talkative. I closed the window and reloaded and it worked again, so that's a cause for hope.

I know people use gabbly because it is easier than irc or whatever but it might be preferable to many people or perhaps I should not post without giving this "gabbly" a try.

IRC is always there. Almost... and if not there is always other servers and channels but then you might not find people like the #qc ircissians on them and that kinda means they suck.

Guys, let's consider the following:

1. Gabbly has never been anything but buggy
2. Gabbly is boring anyway because all people talk about is booze and shitty bands nobody's heard of because they are terrible (I have tried to listen to plenty of them)
3. This thread hasn't had a single post in it that hasn't been related to Gabbly being completely fucking broken and it is 7 pages long
4. SEVEN PAGES OF BITCHING ABOUT GABBLY BEING BROKEN
5. IRC isn't that goddamn hard, you guys
6. I mean seriously my mom could probably even use it and she is still using AOL

In conclusion, stfu and get IRC and then we won't have this trouble.

Wow, I don't get offended but if I did that last post would most likely have done it.

irc is just cool because people idle, that is half the awesomeness of it. Being there and only talking when you find the conversation interesting, or talking to people for 24 hours a day 7 days a week non stop. I connect to 8 irc servers and I am always in 17 #channels 24/7 no mattter what, my pc is on, why not even, and here si the crazy part, make a #gabbly channel on the qc irc server when gabbly is borked! That way you could cut out all the "boring computery talk" and the people you "hate" and leave you with a more stable versatile enjoyable conference chat experience. Hell, you might even find some people that are nice to talk to, who you share interests and views with because I know that I sure as peas have. I even spent two evenings this week with some people from irc, who I met for the first time, granted one was from the forums but they are all awesome people. Irc is awesome but I guess smackheads would tell you something similar about heroin.

tl;dr

Well, see, I happen to frequent both. I travel a whole lot as well, Tommy, but my macbook goes with me everywhere. Occasionally I will encounter a wireless network that blocks irc ports (usually 6667, which incidentally is the one #qc uses), but that is not all that often!

I really like being able to talk with a bunch of people all at once and carry on rather lively conversations with multiple participants. However, I can definitely say that I would probably not [attempt to] use Gabbly nearly so much as I do if the people in it were not (for whatever reason) so averse to using IRC, because I find that the setup and visuals in IRC programs to be more organised and visually appealing and easier to follow. I like that there are admins in IRC because they can throw out people who are being disruptive trolling dicks and fix programming issues when they arise!

Gabbly often does not load for me; I think that since the last time it was universally not loading for everyone it works 1 in 3 tries. I do not know why this is! Perhaps it is my browser that it does not like, or something. Plus I am not really sure why people keep bringing up the fact that Gabbly is a "free chat program" when IRC is also free.

We talk about things in IRC that are not nerdy sometimes! The other day I had a conversation about haircuts and hairstyles with some people in #qc, and discussed bras versus corsets in #xkcd, but neither conversation lasted very long because there were not enough interested parties to keep it going. We do not really ever talk about music because all the people who want to talk about music avoid IRC in favour of Gabbly, so I guess you just have to pick and choose which are your lesser evils.

Post-script: Tommy, as far as bands go, I find I agree with Patrick in about 50% of the Gabbly music conversations I witness. Deerhoof is really not that good. I am sorry! Maybe I just need to see them live and my opinion will be changed, but as it stands now, I cannot listen to their music without wanting to break things. And some of the music videos Khar posts are amazing and hilarious, but the music is shite! I do not know what to say beyond this.

Edit: Obsessions, do you use Windows? If so, can you use Trillian? a flash drive with the program on that? Chatzilla with Firefox? Ok problem solved.

Oh, well, to be fair, gabbly has a lot of conversations about booze and sex and stuff. However, I guess it is good to know where else I can go to get my geek fix. I enjoy talking to the people who frequent gabbly and finding them all in one place is more efficient and leaves conversation options slightly more open than talking to all of them on AIM or MSN or whatever.

I have used mute in gabbly on many occasions. Maybe this is rooted in the same tendency I have to use /ignore in IRC, which I do a lot. Also #qc admins are not that bad! They mostly tend to be busy with their programming projects or work or coding homework, anyway, though, so I guess that could be the reason. (I am an op. Does this make me also a bug?)

In conclusion: Pickle should come back to IRC because I miss him. <3

The relevance of the fact that it is free is that it's churlish to complain about the reliability of things that are free.

IRC always works for me and ChatZilla is free, etc. etc. been there done that.

I do not believe that it is a fair argument that Gabbly is inferior just because you were once in there when something you personally didn't like was being discussed.

After several weeks of pretty much spending my entire existence in Gabbly before it was moved to a private location, I find it a bit odd that the word 'once' was used here.

In Gabbly you can mute people you don't like. The fact that nobody ever uses this feature tells you a lot.

How can you know that for sure? Schrödinger's cat could be alive or dead. Nobody knows. And this metaphorical box is reinforced concrete.

I have never used #qc and I like the people in gabbly. Also, it's kind of funny when you log on and your name eats the person at the top of the list. And you can pretend to be someone else if you're the same color.

And I don't really get what's so bad about the conversation. I like it. There are bits where sometimes people talk about games I don't play or whatever, so either I direct my attention elsewhere and pick up again when the topic has changed or I talk to the others who aren't talking about games. And except for the time when it was down for a while, it's worked for me since I've started using it.

I'd like to mention here that I love it when khar logs in at like 5am when I've been up all night and tells me about some obscure histories.

Is it my wifi or is gabbly down again? I haven't been able to get on in hours. By that, I mean I can't see anyone on the user list and no text appears or anything.

Basically I am trying to get ahold of Richard. Oy!

Hey everyone, I need to buy some new bookshelves. When I get back from Ikea and put them together you're all invited to the bookshelf launch party.
