Super Princess Peach is actually a very good platformer.

Trace Memory is a bit short, but great if you like adventure/puzzle games, and you should be able to get a cheap used copy since it's rather old.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2.

Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time.

Feel the Magic and Rub Rabbits are completely bizarre and amusing.

Advance Wars: Dual Strike.

I love Project Rub/Rub Rabbits, but I don't recommend them often because they're so short and a lot of people seem to dislike them. They're actually some of my favourite DS games.

I never played Trace Memory, or Hotel Dusk, but I hear that the latter is the better game. I know it looks cooler. I want that one!

After talking about it with Darryl in the other thread I went to my Gamespot profile and looked up all the DS games I own. It's a lot, but I have an addiction, so I can't help myself. I wouldn't say that I don't like any of them (although I was mildly disappointed in the FFIII remake), but I put an asterisk next to the ones I really enjoy:

Come to think of it, there are a lot of great games on the DS. But if you wanted me to narrow it down to 10, I'd say all 3 Phoenix Wrights, Elite Beat Agents, Zelda, New Super Mario Brothers, Meteos, Pokemon, Mario Kart, and Advance Wars. However, I would point out that Advance Wars should not only be pretty hard to find at this point, but there's also a new Advance Wars game coming out in less than a month, that has Wi-Fi multiplayer. So you're probably better off waiting for that if you're interested in that type of game.

Animal Crossing is the devil.  It will consume your soul.  Not only did my girlfriend and I waste hundreds of hours on the Gamecube version, but like a crack-addicted monkey I couldn't resist the DS one.

It's not actually fun in any identifiable way, I have no idea what the appeal is.  All I know is collecting furniture has never been more fun.

Front Mission

The game really hasn't aged well, or maybe I just can't play that game anymore.  I recall enjoying it tremendously on my emulator back in the day, and I think it comes down to the fastforward button on ZSNES.  I feel like the battles are needlessly drawn out and there's nothing you can do to speed it up.  It made me pretty sad.

DS games I have played and liked:
Advance Wars: Dual Strike - this is a very very good game for the first few continents.  Then you realise you are playing basically the exact same easy game four times (I think?) and then jumping into the harder area.  I couldn't really fight the fatigue before things got interesting.  I tried to persist, but I lost patience with the story mode.  I still had a lot of fun with the skirmish modes, though.
Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - this is probably one of the best games I've ever played.  It is very simplistic in some places, but very fun everywhere else.  The way it leverages on skills learned recently then requires combinations of those skills at later areas is pure Zelda, of course.  I just didn't expect it to be so well done and integrated with the DS control set.
New Super Mario Brothers - It is a Super Mario Bros game on the DS.  Woo!


DS games I have played and did not like:
Brain Training - This was interesting for a little while, but then I scored a perfect 21 one time when I was hyped up on caffeine and ever since it's been boring.  You play the same minigames over and over again.  Every now and then you get a new one.  Great.
Final Fantasy III - too fucking slow.  Not enough to do.  I know that It's a remake of a very old game, but it *feels* like it and I am not quite sure why they released it again when the RPG world has pretty much moved on.
Trauma Center - This was an interesting idea, but I got really really sick of the cliches and being able to predict when my patient was going to mysteriously semi-explode in the middle of an operation.  I also *really* didn't appreciate the bullshit with the fish.  I was expecting to do operations, not shoot at fucking fish with a laser.


I've played a bit of the following games and I'll give you my half-thoughts:
Final Fantasy XII: Whatever the fuck - I have mixed feelings about this one.  On the one hand it shows some promise and will probably tide me over until FFTA2 comes out in English.  On the other hand it is SO FUCKING SLOW to get through all the bullshit story bits and there is no way to speed up the dialogue.  As a matter of fact as far as I can see there are no options whatsoever, which is extremely annoying.
I have played a little bit of Drawn to Life but I am not really sure it is a game targeted at me, so I don't think I can talk about it at all.
FIFA08 - I have mucked about with the manager mode in this quickly while waiting for the train.  It is pretty hard to get used to the controls and how things are supposed to be done.  I wasn't expecting the exact same thing as FIFA on the PS2, but I was expecting something similar enough that it didn't seem like an entirely different game.

Okay, here are a few that I have played:

New Super Mario Brothers - Basically, a lot of fun. Has lots of replay value if you are the type of person to want to complete everything completely. Great game.

Super Mario DS - This one is essentially a remake of Super Mario 64. Except different. There are some weird things that were never in the 64 version, but it is still pretty fun.

Tetris DS - If you love tetris, this is great. It is the one game that I can honestly say I have played the most on my DS. Great with multiplayer, great when playing on your own and definitely fun when you are versing the CPU. I love it.

I have played a little bit of Drawn to Life but I am not really sure it is a game targeted at me, so I don't think I can talk about it at all.

drawn to life is very cute because you get to draw your own character and some of the game elements. i still get happy when i see a cloud platform in the game and i think 'awww... i drew that cloud!' however, as a platformer it is seriously mediocre, if even that. the storyline is lame and the game itself isn't very creative. the only appeal of the game is drawing your own stuff, which for me is enough. and since you're wondering, yes, i'm sure that you could find a way to fit a giant dong inside the character template box so that you could play as a giant walking phallus. if that's your thing. my character is a cat.

i also suggest yoshi's island. i just got it yesterday and it is really fun. i also recently got my word coach, which if you are lame and like vocabulary like i do is also a good game.

I really enjoyed New Super Mario Brothers but seriously, even doing everything only took me about two days.

Compare that to Super Mario World, when I first got that I know it took me at least several weeks to find all the hidden exits and whatnot.  Of course, that was before teh interweb and readily available faqs.

Actually forget I suggested Advance Wars and just pick up cheap copies of Fire Emblem and Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones as they are far superior turn-based war games.  Unless you hate story and interesting characters.

LOZ: Phantom Hourglass- Purely touch features, with a little microphone blowing.  Also, Fuck Beetle.  He did his close of business sale as soon as I started the game (Heart container for 1500) and his stupid compliment card.  Still, best Zelda game I've played since FSA (haven't played Twilight Princess yet)


Pokemon: Pearl/Diamond- The same Pokemon games we know and love, just a little different. Anyone have the Action Replay codes to get the Gold/Silver starter Pokemon?


Star Trek: Tactical Assault- While Starfox DS let you down, this one fulfills your spaceship shooter.  Even some of my non-trekkie(trekker?) friends liked this game enough to pick up a copy.

Animal Crossing: Wild World- The most addicting Gamecube game is back with a vengence.  Now you can go to your friend's town and interact with him/her.  

New Super Mario Brothers- Mario returns to his level-by-level platform roots.  Easy, straight forward, but still fun.

Oh man, I can't believe I forgot that too. Viewtiful Joe on the DS was fantastic, and it's now available at a budget price. Easily one of the best games on the system, even if the controls are awkward and it's a little short.

God damn did that ever make me angry. I liked the game well enough and this didn't absolutely kill it for me but it wasn't necessary at all. Can't you just make a game about doing a series of increasingly difficult surgical procedures and leave it at that? Like, what's so tough about that?

I'm not sure if it really counts as a "game" but I love BrainAge for the DS.  The Sudoku on there can and will occupy hours at a time.

And although its already been said numerous times, I'm gonna echo the sentiments about Animal Crossing.

I would highly recommend every game I have for the DS, so here it goes, I've bolded my "Must Gets"

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrows - It's a great platformer, with enough variation in weapons and abilities to hold your attention for a while. The touch screen is a little tacked on, but otherwise it's a lot of fun.

New Super Mario - If you're going  to choose between this and Super Mario DS, I'd go with this, it's a little fresher and the mini games are a little better.

Super Mario DS - Still well worth getting, it puts a little bit of a new spin on a game that you've probably beaten before. I really liked the multiplayer on this even if the game is a little limited.

Mario Kart DS - There is no reason not to get this game, it is my favorite entry in the Mario Kart series, and it is also my favorite multiplayer game for the DS. This game is how we spent half of our marching band bus rides this year, the other half belonging to

Tetris DS - Sure you have regular Tetris, which I can play for hours without tiring, but it also has a great multiplayer, which everyone remembers was a lot of fun at the demonstration game boy booths, but you could never do before. The download play allows you to take on up to 9 different people if I'm not mistaken, and there is much fun and cussing to be had by all. The other games are also a lot of fun. If you ever even kind of liked Tetris, get this game.

Phoenix Wright - Now, there's a thing about Phoenix Wright. Either you love it or you hate it. Fortunately, I have yet to personally meet anyone who hated it. It's silly and clever, and that's always something to be admired in a game. Get all three and beat them all, it's very rewarding.

Phantom Hourglass - It does not disappoint as a Zelda game, and everything is a lot of fun. There is one puzzle that took me three hours to do, but ti's just because I don't always think outside of the box with video games. Why do you not have this right now? Get it.

and finally

Meteos - This was my stopgap until they made Tetris DS, and let me tell you, it was a lot of fun. It's one of the faster paced puzzle games that I've played, and it's definitely worth it.

Dissy, I think you are thinking of another puzzle game. Gunpey includes forming lines with shapes, but there's no dude to cross them or anything. It's kind of like tetris, but with new shapes and purposes and fun characters that really only exist to be fun looking.

so i've been playing through super princess peach recently and that actually is an awesome game. i'm having a bit of a hard time with it because my copy is in japanese... i have a feeling that they actually give you a lot of hints about how to play the game, but i can only read maybe half of them... and usually not the verb parts of the sentence... but after some trial and error i figure it out. it is cute!

I enjoyed Super Princess Peach roughly as much as I enjoyed New Super Mario Bros.

I think some of my disappointment with NewSMB is that it really was NewSMB, it wasn't NewSMB3.  They need to make a new game in the vein of SMB3 (i.e. lots of different powerups instead of just 1 or 2, a complex overworld map, etc).

Who am I kidding, what I really want is a sequel to that Kirby game that you played by tilting the Game Boy.  That shit was FUN.

Games I have played for Ds and liked:

Tetris DS.  this is the best and most complete tetris I have played in years, and I actually went and got another copy when I lost it to an ex.

Zelda.  I have no words for how good this game is.  It controls easily, uses all of the ds features in creative ways, and I mean, come on.  It's 2d zelda.

Brain Age 2.  I agree that the first one lost its appeal after awhile, but the second one has word games and a piano player, and multiplayer number memory.

Elektroplankton.  Even though it's less a game than a music experiment, I may have played this longer than I played FF7, and I fought the Weapons.

I agree that Front Mission hasn't aged well at all, which is sad really.

I like New Super mario bros, but.....After playing I just wasn't feeling it as well as, say, Super Mario world, which was MUCH better.

Both dragon quest games I list are great, and make me want an english release of the recent DQ 4 remake over here all the more.

Spectrobes had some good ideas, but they weren't executed very well, hopefully the upcoming sequel will be much better.

Despite this, I still have yet to find that one DS game that will reallty suck me in, you know? The one that really stands out for me.
