Favorite Puzzle games
« on: 26 Dec 2007, 20:07 »

Puzzle games are fantastic, as a general rule.  They offer something most other games can't, which is to say unlimited engaging gameplay.  I don't know about you guys, but I can still play Tetris for hours and hours on end years after it's initial release.

Lately, I've been horribly addicted to Bejeweled 2.  Damn you, Popcap!

Bejeweled 2 is the only puzzle game of which I bought the full version.

I love it, especially the Endless Mode.

I am pretty much a fan of any form of Tetris.  If blocks fall from the ceiling in pre-assigned shapes I am there.

I've been playing Puzzle Quest a lot lately, which is basically Bejeweled with RPG elements. However, I can't decide if I'm actually having fun while I play it or if it's just a combination of OCD and masochism on my part. It's not a hard game, per se, but the random elements of Bejeweled (you know, new gems that you can't necessarily see falling in from the top) take on a whole new flavor when they can result in you getting raped by an Ogre for 30 damage and you have to play through the match again. The PSP version is apparently rather buggy, but there's a version available for the DS as well as a PC version. Anyway, here's a link if any of you guys are curious: Puzzle Quest Demo

Yeah, I've got the DS version and I know what you mean.  I am super careful to make sure I eat up ALL skull gems and even then, I'll lose a round to something with super high attack score because it'll just get lucky.  Good game, but I actually prefer just plain ol' Bejeweled.

Ok, Zero, so I keep collecting the white things, and going deeper and deeper with the red things, but the orange things take me back and sometimes turn blue.

In other words, what the fuck?

Nothing can really beat Tetris, but I do love some fun Puyo Pop on my DS and my new Gunpey for my DS. The DS is the best place for me to play puzzle games as they can be quick and dirty between classes.

I may or may not have just lost the last four hours of my life to flOw.  Do I need a ps3 for a version with a save feature and no slowdown?

because seriously, I feel like a better person after having played that game.  It reminds me of the first time I played Thief.

Are you seriously thinking about buying a 500 dollar console to play a downloadable game that you can get for free on the PC?

Wednesday's Xbox Live Arcade release is also a puzzle game. It's called Poker Smash, and the guys on 1up Yours were speaking well of it a few weeks ago. I'll probably download the demo at the very least, but I also probably buy way more Live Arcade games then I should.

yes.  To be fair, I was probably going to get one anyways (littlebigplanet), but yes.
Actually, that's how I play games: I generally don't get consoles because they seem cool; I get them because I Must Have one or two games for them.  For DS, it was Tetris and Elektroplankton.

I think I've got certain parts figured out, like, I'm relatively certain you are supposed to start with the little man and most likely end with the springs or the ball.

Why has no one mentioned Portal.

You all are failures.

There's a word / puzzle game called Bookworm Adventures made by the Wal-Mart of the casual game market, Popcap. It is immaculate, and as far as I know it predates Puzzle Quest by a few months at least.

I quite like Puzzle Pirates. Not only does it have pirates, but the puzzles are fun and the overall community is by the far the best I've found on any online game so far.

Also, it's free, which is good for cheapskates such as myself.

Bookworm Adventures IS pretty awesome.  I wouldn't really define it as a "Puzzle Game", however, as it's more akin to Boggle than it is Tetris.

Nah, it's a puzzle game. If you take out the puzzles, there is basically no game.

My favorite puzzle game ATM is The New York Times Crosswords for DS. It's difficult to find, but so fulfilling. If you like crosswords.

City Bloxx.
The idea is to build a city in a 5x5 square.
You have 4 types of buildings of increasing height; blue, red, green & yellow. In order, each requires the previous buildings next to it ... so blue can be put anywhere, but red buildings have to be next to blue, and yellow requires blue, red & green in adjacent squares. You can build over old buildings.
Building height is a factor for population (score), but I spend more time wondering how to get as close as possible to all yellow buildings.
(yeah, I know it's not much compared to any real pc games ... it's just something to pass time while I'm on the train)

In the next 10 days I will be getting this game and I will go without sleep for...weeks.  I've honestly not heard or seen a single negative review except for people going "You know...it seems easy...but it gets REALLY hard."
