Charlie Wilson's War
« on: 28 Dec 2007, 21:21 »

This is a movie of names. It is defined throughout by one name in particular: Aaron Sorkin. Sorkin brings all of his small screen charms and manages to deliver a screenplay which nearly manages to make us believe this is a real movie. Now, I don't mean this in a bad way, but I often felt like I was watching a television show; a tight, well scripted, enjoyable television show. Aside from a slightly rushed third act, the pacing is quick and yet slow enough to let us get into the story.
But the story isn't why you're there, it's all about the dialogue with Sorkin, and he comes through. While the tense, blunt exchanges between Charlie (Hanks), the Texas congressman whose personal morals may be loose, but knows exactly how to work the hill, and Gust Avrakatos (Hoffman), a CIA outsider looking to sidestep the impotent CIA brass, are some of the best; Charlie's fine-edge sexual/intellectual duels with Joanna Herring (Roberts) are the real payoff for the viewer. The odd dynamic of the pair feels lived in, Charlie is always at a disadvantage with Joanna, something they both know, and accept.
Needless to say, all of this A-list talent can be somewhat overwhelming to the TV script, but it never stops being entertaining. The most in synch with Sorkin's humour is Amy Adams, turning in a flawless performance as Rep. Wilson's personal attendent, and ultimately his anchor in politics.
What of the movie itself? I found it very enjoyable, indeed engaging. This may have had something to do with my recent interest in my professional future, but it really made me feel the need to be in a position to affect foreign affairs. This is a message movie, make no mistake, but it seems to be a little unsure of what that message is. Is it that the U.S. ought to be wary of our current military affairs? Is it to place the blame for the current state of Afghanistan on the inaction of our lawmakers?
Regardless, I recommend this movie wholeheartedly.

I liked the movie, but it doesn't do the payoff of the secret war justice. It gets caught up in the whole circus aspect of politics and the celebration of the characters' "can-do" American spirit that when it has to get to confront the fact that Wilson popped Afghanistan out of the frying pan and into the fire it doesn't quite do it right. It aims for fun for so long it can't get somber and reflective where it ought to. As a result, the movie feels a lot more positive and lighthearted than it really ought to be.

And man, in how many movies do they have to switch on the ominous music whenever a number of middle-eastern people start dancing and cheering? That was the one part of the movie that really felt heavy-handed. The screenplay was the best thing Aaron Sorkin's done in years.

Also, tits at the beginning. 4 stars (the movie, not the tits, which get 3 for not being onscreen very long)

I really want to see this film. I half-seriously made it my mission to watch all films with Julia Roberts in them when I realised she had starred in three of my favourite films, but now that I'm over half way through it seems like a more realistic goal than I first thought!

Sadly it wasn't out on DVD last time I put in an Amazon order and wouldn't you just now, I no longer have any money.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."

Which makes her an exceptional choice to play a wealthy conservative Texan socialite.

The absence of Richard Gere from your list is a startling omission.

I'm Not There was a movie I really loved which happened to have Richard Gere in it.

Gwyneth Paltrow was in The Royal Tenenbaums.

A quick search of IMDB confirms that with those actors, those movies are notable exceptions though.

If you've already seen it, wouldn't you not need to estimate?

Theoretically I am prefacing my answer to "How good is it?" with "I guess..."

"Closer"

Jude Law, Clive Owen and Julia Roberts.  The screenplay was awesome, and the movie gets a 9/10 in my book.

Also, Charlie Wilson's War looks entertaining to say the least, but it's a renter.

Is Closer that film where everybody plays an arsehole? Because, seems to me there are enough arseholes in everyday life without paying good money to go see a film about them.

I'd say two of the four main characters are "quite mean," but I can't see Natalie Portman as being a bitch in real life.

Clive Owen, maybe.

I saw it a couple weeks ago with my boyfriend. We were the only people under 40, seriously.
I think they did very well portraying Charlie Wilson. Hanks did a good job with the role, I think, and he did look like a congressman with that hairdo. Hoffman's character was hilarious. The movie is pretty true to Charlie Wilson's story from what I've read, although after watching the movie, I couldn't believe it actually happened until I looked stuff up.
My favorite line was "You can teach them to type,  but you can't teach them to grow tits."
The accents, though, especially Julia Roberts, were excruciating.

Let the record show that one of the hallmarks of a United States congressperson is his/her dumb hair.

Yeah, I heard it was funny, at times. I was referring more to Margot at the Wedding, which is a movie composed almost entirely of people's callous disregard for the emotional wellbeing of others.
