Yeah, De-Loused was pure class and really solid, but since then there's too much masturbatory bullshit and not enough tunes.

Although kind of in line with what tommy said, it is kind of respectable that of the really huge mainstream rock acts, theirs is the sound closest to what you'd get if you set out to be as obnoxious as possible and alienate the average listener. Yet they have a huge fanbase. Which is semi-respectable. And he still has great hair.

^Bedlam in Goliath has nothing but tunes and the masturbatory stuff is kept to the minimum. Personally I love musical masturbation, it's much better than the boring musical restraint that you see in a lot of indie bands.

"Restraint" is an interesting choice since a good deal of high-profile independent records in this decade have demonstrated a knack for bombast. Unless you mean that they're reining in their noodling tendencies, in which case I'd argue that they're entitled to if it makes the song better.

McTaggart:
Ok, I just heard some track off the new Mars Volta on the radio. I really don't know what they were trying to achieve with it. It pretty much sounded like they had guitars?

ImRonBurgundy?:
Hahaha.  "Hey, there's some guitars in this studio, let's play something!"
