we like the smiths too

man I hate the fuckin' smiths

is there a 'real' rip of that Portishead around or is it still a might-be-the-finished-product-might-not version?

there's a logical gap the size of the grand fuckin' canyon between not liking slipknot and not liking loud music, guy. I 'get' what derivative nth-wave nu-metal is, which is why I go out of my way to keep it from reaching my ears :-D

And whatever the new Slipknot record is called.

Yeah, you should've guessed by now that no-one aside from me is going to give a shit about Slipknot on this board.

As for me, I think Volume 3 showed they had hitherto unseen depths and I'm curious where they'll take it on the next album.

Eh, Ten Thousand Fists was okay. It had good vocals.

Slipknot was fun when I was 13, I'll give it that much.

I will concede that Disturbed has written some pretty great riffs in their past as well.  I mean, not exactly "Into the Void" caliber by any means, but not unlistenable.

Man, I used to love Slipknot and Disturbed. A lot. Sometimes I still do but I don't think I will ever praise them for their ingenuity in songwriting.

I put it to you that ingenuity is not always necessary. Slipknot are very angry and loud and it suits certain moods for me. It's a type of therapy, I suppose, in an emo teenagery type of way.

Bah my music is wasted on you people, I see. Most people don't get Slipknot or Disturbed. Do any of you ralize that they have a lot of different sounding songs than the ones you've probably heard on the radio or TV? Whatever. Wasted on you people  . I still think those albums are going ot be great even if most of you don't like loud music.

how about the Fratellis new album
Attack and Release by the Black Keys
and The Age of Understatement by The Last Shadow Puppets

I figure if i pick albums that nobody is expecting than they might turn out better than the hyped up ones.

Blood on the Wall's Liferz  and the new Daturah have been on heavy rotation on my iPod the last couple weeks.  They're very loud and, not liking Slipknot and all, I don't like loud music, so I have to listen to them with the volume real low, but they're still excellent.

I'm also not much of a country fan, but the new Kathleen Edwards record is very pretty indeed.

Oh, and the new Experimental Aircraft is fucking amazing

Yeah I did mean Amber Headlights. Didn't it sound totally half-arsed to you? I mean, the last song seemed to just cut off halfway through.

It's one of these albums I have to buy, and I just can't find it anywhere.

Anyway, I'm still waiting for Table of the Elements Guitar series 3 & 4, but I'd never be able to afford it.

There is a not a year in creation, certainly not one I was alive in that could give me a top ten albums list. I probably have a top three albums list from 2006, five if I am very lucky.

However, new Endless Mike and the Beagle Club and new Old Crow Medicine Show albums might make this a magical year. At least for my top two list.

There is a not a year in creation, certainly not one I was alive in that could give me a top ten albums list.

I think my favourite year for music that I was alive for was 1994.

Jeff Buckley - Grace
Blur - Parklife
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Let Love In
Beastie Boys - Ill Communication
Oasis - Definitely Maybe
Pink Floyd - Division Bell
KoRn - KoRn
NIN - The Downward Spiral
Machine Head - Burn My Eyes
Offspring - Smash
The Proclaimers - Hit The Highway
Notorious B.I.G. - Ready To Die

And, most importantly, Weezer's self-titled debut, the album which to date has probably influenced me more than any other.

1994 ruled.

Anyone heard the new Sun Kil Moon? I saw it at a record store today (earlier than expected for release) and was tempted, but I need money for tonight so I didn't get it.

It's very anticipated for me. Yep... (cough - Mediafire thread - cough)!

I'm one of the few people who maintains that Make Believe was better than either Green or Maladroit. I think that 'Beverly Hills' is great satire - whether Rivers claims it's serious or not - and that 'We Are All On Drugs' is fantastic. I think that the next album is going to be great - he says in the liner notes to Alone that he's been doing lots of six-minute epics for it, which reminds me of 'Only In Dreams.'

Here's my top 10 at the moment:

1. White Hinterland - Phylactery Factory
2. Have A Nice Life - Deathconsciousness
3. Gregor Samsa - Rest
4. Jade - Analogic
5. Balmorhea - River Arms
6. Chris Wood - Trespasser
7. Heidi Talbot - In Love And Light
8. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
9. Fleet Foxes - Ragged Wood
10. Jon Foreman - Fall, Winter

I'm considering switching White Hinterland and Have A Nice Life's positions.  Also, I'm not sure if Jon Foreman can legitimately be there considering that Fall, Winter is just a combination of the Fall and Winter EPs.  Not that it'll matter for long though, since I assume something will knock him out of the 10th spot sooner or later.

All i know at this point is that M83's Saturdays=Youth is going to stay in my top ten this year.

managed to nab a leak and it's just... perfect. for me. me. *hugs it*

I wrote a quasi-review elsewhere because i needed to gush. copy pasta:

I could best describe it as 'M83 makes an 80's coming of age flick soundtrack with lots of long, introspective road-trip scenes'. If you've heard of m83 before, then you'll be pleasantly surprised at the turn they've taken their work, retaining their 'epic', escalating electronic sound into pop music territory. (It reminds me of Apparatt's "Walls", not sound-wise, but in the way they derived from themselves to make a more accessable album).

key tracks
"skin of the night": beautiful, ghostlike, delicate female vocals. it gave me chills when i first heard it on my laptop, and even more chills on the headphones.

"Up!": great (female again) vocals on this one. you'll be humming and singing along to the infectious if i clean my rocket out, we'll go flying today chorus.

other notable tracks: "couleurs", "highway of endless dreams", "we own the sky" and "graveyard girl".

Not to point out the obvious but are you not aware that was his specific intent?  It is literally a concept album about being 15 in the 80s.  Hence the Molly Ringwald girl on the cover.

I think it's one of the best of the year, too.  Top 10 for sure.

Best album I've heard all year for sure. It's in the mediafire thread so download it! Awesome jazz/dub inspired "post-rock" with lotsa trumpet.

This thread needs more people masturbating over the White EP.

Goddamn, that stuffs good.
Masturbating? does musing bitterly on life in front of a fire as it snows, with a brandy snifter next to you count? Well, that doesn't really matter, as I can't do that, but I can zone out to it. Yeah, kinda late to the party, but I didn't notice this thread for a while.

Stuff I love already:

YOUTHMOVIES - GOOD NATURE . (gogetthisnow)

DeVotchKa - A Mad and Faithful Telling .
Black Keys - Attack & Release .
Foals - Antidotes .
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! .

As for stuff I am impatiently awaiting -

-the October Game . Their debut, 'Box of a Billion Lights' , came out way back in 2006 on small indie label Carmandie Records, and is seriously one of the best things I have ever heard.... right now they're back in the studio recording more; the first track 'Threads' is currently on their Myspace www.myspace.com/theoctobergame .

-the Dresden Dolls - 'No, Virginia'

-Amanda Palmer - 'Who Killed Amanda Palmer?' . For whoever mentioned Ben Folds as being 'overdue' earlier, he produced this, so if he doesn't end up coming out with anythin just get this instead.

-Gliss have been posting demos on their myspace that sound really really promising - as sexy as their old stuff, but with added pop sensibility. As far as I can tell, the provisional album title might be 'Sister Sister' . No idea on a release date, though.

-Weezer.

-Captain - 'Distraction' . There is a track on there called 'The Gamble' that they performed for us in a live session that sounds mind-blowing.

-J.U.F.  .... I only saw rumours of this floating around the internet and am unsure of whether to believe it or not but it would be very cool.

-Patrick Wolf

That is all I can think of off the top of my head. Did someone say more Porcupine Tree? That would be excellent.

I tend to not read what artists say about their upcoming albums until i listen to it first if i can manage it, and fortunately, this was one of those cases.
It pleased me, as it must please them, that their intent was read loud and clear.

I've been listening to this album almost every day now, and I haven't even seen the cover art yet!

So it turns out that Sam Shalabi's new one is pretty great, and has just entered into my top ten:
1. White Hinterland - Phylactery Factory
2. Have A Nice Life - Deathconsciousness
3. Gregor Samsa - Rest
4. Jade - Analogic
5. Balmorhea - River Arms
6. Chris Wood - Trespasser
7. Heidi Talbot - In Love And Light
8. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
9. Fleet Foxes - Ragged Wood
10. Sam Shalabi - EID

I listened to M83, and it's pretty good.  I haven't given it a rating yet, but I'll most likely put it in my current top 30 or so.

Old Growth?  Really?  I just can't get into it.  It feels very half-assed for a Dead Meadow album.  There's only one guitar jam on the entire album!

The US release of Smile is kind of borked, I am so glad I got the Japanese version.  The US release doesn't have that first song, which is fucking awesome.

Honorable mentions so far: Everybody Out!'s self-titled LP (out tomorrow), and my album, which I'm hoping to have on sale by late May.

That I do not get. If you are doing a list (presumably top ten) and don't even have ten to fill it, why do you make an honorable mention? Just make it seven.
Man that was a worthless nitpick but I never understand that.

Also I would buy your album but alas, I am not a cute girl.

-Amanda Palmer - 'Who Killed Amanda Palmer?' . For whoever mentioned Ben Folds as being 'overdue' earlier, he produced this, so if he doesn't end up coming out with anythin just get this instead.

I have waited years for this day.  The day another Amanda Palmer fan joined these forums.  If we both put down $20, we can buy her eyebrows!

Everybody Out's LP wasn't out when I made the list. Now it is. Question being: Do I try to find a pirated version, or do I get it when I see them next weekend.

Also Sean, I guess I can make an exception for you. You're like a cuter version of Patrick. =P

Jackie, that first track on the Boris album was re-mixed/re-done for the US version It's the track called "Statement".

I was kinda disappointed by it too, but the music is still pretty sweet.  I'm not sure if it's best-of-the-year material, but it's definitely one of the albums I've been enjoying the most since the year began.

True enough, but the original is SO much better imo.
