Holy shit, the further I get in the new Islands album the more I absolutely love it. It's really terrific. The best thing I've heard this year? Yes, quite possibly. It's close either way. There's even a brilliant homage to The Who.

Yeah, especially not since Jamie Thompson left. No more dual vocal awesomeness and such  :x
Still, I'm doing my darndest to think of them as independent bands in order to avoid comparisons like that one.

Arm's Way is my #1 album for 2008 so far. I'm pretty sure I haven't listened to anything else that's come out this year, though. Oops!

Also, WHY haven't I listened to the Unicorns yet?

OK, so right now, and this is very tentative mind you, it's:

1. Army Way - Islands
2. 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons - Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band
3. Memory Drawings - The Drift
4. Heretic Pride - The Mountain Goats
5. Fuck Buttons - Street Horrrsing

I'm sure I'm forgetting things but that's the list so far. Of course, with new Mogwai and Sigur Ros on the way I expect (hope anyway) that everything will be pushed back two spaces.

EDIT: I fixed the order. Two and three needed to be swapped. This occurred to me after re-listening to '13 Blues...'

YES!! Good god, yes. "Arm's Way" blows "Return to the Sea" way out of the water (no pun intended). I was equally lukewarm on the debut but wow is the new one great.

Also, looks like we're getting more Silver Mt. Zion this year. A live album is slated for a mid-summer release. Hell yeah!

Attack and Release, the new Black Keys album is without a doubt one of my top 10 albums of 2008.  It's so good I haven't been able to stop listening to it.  I've probably listened to the whole album at least 15 times now and I still haven't gotten bored of listening to it yet.  I became a Black Keys fan recently after my friend played their album Thickfreakness for me.  Ever since that fateful day I have become enamored with the band and can't stop listening to them.  In their new album they begin to branch off from their usual high powered blues riffs and maniacal drums and start to show their softer side, a side which is just as good their usual blues rock in my opinion.  The bands decision to have Danger Mouse, an accomplished music producer, work with them on the album was a good one.  Not only does it fulfill my need for awesome blues riffs, it also satisfies my growing hunger for "indie" (for lack of a better word) music .  This album is much more polished than their previous works which may deter other Black Keys fans, but in my opinion it reveals how great of musicians they are.  Attack and Release builds upon what they have already done and gives more depth to their sound.  All in all, Attack and Release, go listen to it and hopefully you'll find as much to like about The Black Keys as I do.

The record label that the Black Keys guy runs is putting out an album by some friends of mine, one of Knoxville's best bands, The Royal Bangs.  It's coming out in early May.  Everyone should buy it.

There's a new Sloan album on the way and I can't help but notice the strategic release date -

June 6th - JohnnyC's Birthday
June 10th - Parallel Play released
June 12th - Tommydski's Birthday
June 20th - JC and Tommydski both in Toronto for Tronnocon

Could you be more subtle guys?!

You know, I was really unsatisfied with Arm's Way as a whole album (it seemed like every other track was really good and the others were decent at best), but as I listen to it more and more, especially with a good pair of headphones walking between classes, it's incredibly more awesome than I initially thought.

You think they'll be playing songs off it at a show this Tuesday even though the album's not really out yet?

the kills "midnight boom", the other 2008 album i've been listening to. i think it's hard for the Kills to do any wrong. there's so much conviction in their sound that even if its just a bunch of squeaky noises and armpit burping, i'd be like "cool, cool". they still make music with all the energy and wide-eyed excitement of a garage band made up of precocious drunk 16 year olds (and that's a good thing).

i'll give boris "smile" a go, but i'm really curious:

is it more Hard Rockin' Boris, or Sleeping with Sun O))) Boris?
cuz if it's the latter i'm totally avoiding it ;)

The former, I guess. It's a little more experimental, but there's still tons of rock.

Having listened to Nadja's 'Desire in Uneasiness', I think I may have to amend my predicted top 10 of 2008. Nadja's taken up the first 4 spots instead of the first 3; I can't really see anyone else getting close, unless if Metallica manage to top AJFA (which I'm quite optimistic about, but it's still qutie unlikely), or The Angelic Process reform and get another album out.

This thread is still very relevant so excuse my pulling it up from page two. I just gotta say that something must be in the water since a lot of bands that I thought to be pretty good but not too fantastic have put out superb albums so far this year. The new Islands blew me away and now the new Wolf Parade has leaked and all I can say is, wow. Their debut was pretty mediocre but this new one is really excellent. I haven't heard the new Tapes 'n Tapes yet but my fingers are crossed for a similar level of improvement. It's a very good year for "indie pop/rock" just like last year was great for all the instrumental/ambient albums that came out. Seriously, listen to the new Wolf Parade. It's awesome.

i really like the new Islands. it pretty much takes everything that i didn't like about the first one (only one or two things, admittedly) and totally gets rid of them and adds some new stuff that i think was desperately needed. the violin in the opening track, for example: so sick.
then there's "Creeper" which is just an awesome song no matter how you look at it.

i could go on, but i won't.

I agree with pretty much everything you said.  The Arm and Creeper are my favorite tracks on Arm's Way probably.  My only minor gripe is the longer song lengths towards the end, but that's not really a gripe I just prefer shorter albums.

Moving on, there were videos on Pitchfork yesterday of The Thermals playing two new songs acoustically.  You can watch them here: http://www.blogotheque.net/The-Thermals,4139

They sound really good, but way more like Urban Legends or Hutch and Kathy songs then Thermals songs. Either way a new Thermals album is definitely my most anticipated release of the year.

No, it's a little bit of a gripe. The whole stretch from "Life in Jail" through "To a Bond" drags on for quite a bit in a way that leaves me bored through at least half of each of those songs, and I felt this way when I saw them play "Life in Jail" and "In the Rushes" live, too. The songs simply meander a little too much without the sort of purpose or build present in, say, "Swans," or even "Vertigo." Taking the album as a whole, it's really more along the lines of "good" than "great." However, based on both the majority of the songs on the album and the way they play them live, Islands as a band has become a lot more interesting with Arm's Way.

So the majority of that list will have to filled up with the stuff in the last few posts.

True. besides, Opeth won't be the worst. Well, it might be, it's really dependent on whether Sufjan releases an album this year.

What's with the Opeth hating? Sure they have a lot of fanboys, that doesn't mean the music is crap.

So far two albums released this year blew me away, the first one being Cut Copy's In Ghost Colours, and the second one Agalloch's The White EP. Thrice also released a good album for a change, and Portishead's Third and Boris's Smile are also great.

@Broken_Drum: is Do Make Say Think's new release leaked yet? How is it?

Also I agree with the Yoeni Opeth is not a bad band at all! Of course, their newer stuff is weaker and I highly doubt their new album will be in my top 10 for 2008.

The new Do Make Say Think is hardly a new album. There's only one new song on this Japanese released EP. There's also a reworked old song, some just plain old songs, and a couple live songs. I wouldn't even really include it in the best of '08 category since pretty much nothing on it is new. It's still worth downloading. A new DMST album, whenever it comes along, will almost certainly be on my top albums of the year list (speaking of which, does anyone actually know when a new full length album is due out?)

Well considering You, You're a History in Rust came out last year I'm gonna say we're probably not going to see anything at least untill next year, possibly 2010.
