What's with the Opeth hating? Sure they have a lot of fanboys, that doesn't mean the music is crap.

I actually love Opeth (esp. morningrise), I just like to joke around.

Two people making negative comments isn't that bad.

Their music IS crap. Unless if you like extremely long, meaningless songs with various clean parts and heavy parts sandwiched together and repeated over and over in an attempt to sound 'artistic'.

So essentially your criticism for Opeth is that they are long and sound 'artistic'?

Would you like to try again?

I take exception to that because calling a song "meaningless" is pretty much the height of condescension. I do not particularly like Opeth, but they do not deserve that.

Listening to coldplays new song makes me think their album might be a surprise hit this year. The new sound is different to what they've done before, less high pitched whining and more bluesy guitar sounds, I hope they continue that theme throughout the album. Hopefully it wont get the same hype as X&Y which was ruined by its own popularity.

Also the Arctic Monkey's side project blew me away by actually being good. Its not amazing but so much better than the actual Monkey's stuff, it has a strong spaghetti western infuence, which i really liked.

"repeated over and over"? Did you ever listen to BWP in one take? They progress all the time, you'll hardly notice any parts being repeated. "extremely long"? I'd hardly say 10 minutes is extremely long, unless you have some problem with listening to some lengthy songs because you can't stay focussed. Lengthy songs often give the band the time to make the songs progress, just like with classical or jazz music. Yes they have heavy parts and softer parts, that makes the music so more beautiful. I don't like music that constantly hammers into you with grunts where everyone plays as hard as they can. At least Opeth takes the time to sound heavy, but beautiful at the same time. For me, this works really well.

Sorry for going slightly off-topic here.

I am mostly through the new Black Angels album Directions to See a Ghost and it is definitely on the short list for album of the year.  Fucking fantastic psyche-rock, somewhere between Spacemen 3 and Dead Meadow.

The only Opeth I've heard is Morningrise, and that was more then enough. For bands that are 'heavy but beautiful' there's far better, Nadja being the obvious one, The Angelic Process, Ulver, Drudkh's Autumn Aurora, hell, Mogwai, and so on and so forth. Opeth's parts are jumbled together almost completely randomly. Also: you're right, 10 minutes isn't that long in general. I have no problem with 20, 30, 60 minute long drone tracks. However, listening to random clean and heavy parts forced together with no real attempt at worthwhile progression (short of "To Bid You Farewell", which is a pretty cool song) for ten minutes is a tiring experience.

New Bongripper is good times, too.

Dear Caspian,

I have been reviewing your post and believe it needs more work. It contains original research and unverified claims (see: jumbled together almost completely randomly, Mogwai are heavy) that we feel are detrimental to what could have been an excellent post. Your use of grammar and spelling was well implemented - but unfortunately, the rest of the post failed to live up to the standards set in this field. Please continue to rework your post, and feel free to submit for reassessment when you feel it is ready.

There's certainly a couple of Mogwai songs that I would classify as 'heavy'. Glasgow Mega-Snake comes to mind pretty much straight away. And any of their better quiet-loud tunes.

Mogwai are the heaviest band I have seen live. But the audience was nowhere near as lively (scary) as the guys at the System of a Down concert.

1. Portishead - Third
2. NIN - Ghosts I-IV
3. Opeth - Watershed
4. ASHES dIVIDE - Keep Telling Myself It's Alright

Haven't heard anything else yet, but I think The Dresden Doll's "No, Virginia" and Massive Attack's new album will be great.

Have you listened to 'Glasgow Mega Snake'? What about 'Like Herod'? 'Ex-Cowboy' maybe? Perhaps 'You Don't Know Jesus'? A lot of their songs recorded live (the Peel Sessions for example)? I'm guessing the answer is no. I challenge you to listen to those songs and then make that statement.

Even in America, the age of consent is under 18 in a lot of states.

Outside America, it is frequently under 18.

It's 16 over here, which is a high-five all round.

I think it's like, 13 in Spain and Denmark, and it's meant that their teenage sex/pregnancy rates are among the lowest in Europe. Or something. I should look it up.

Right now I've got (in no particular order, mind you):

Death Cab For Cutie - Narrow Stairs
Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
The Weepies - Hideaway
Man Man - Rabbit Habbits
Xiu Xiu - Women as Lovers
Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts I-IV
Nada Surf - Lucky
The Mars Volta - The Bedlam in Goliath
Chris Walla - Field Manual
The Matches - A Band In Hope

However, this will likely change with the release of some new albums.

So far this year, I've not heard an album that I would be willing to put at number one on my list. The last few years, I've had numerous records emerge fairly early on that I knew I'd be considering further down the line, but this year everything I've got seems like it's top ten material, possibly, but no number one.

this year, im liking testaments new album(i put it on mediaf!re) now their lead guitarist, alex skolnick is back after 16 years playing jazz.
im really liking joe satriani's new album, lots of groove and melody.

You're doing it wrong. The best release of last year was "Stars of the Lid and Their Refinement of the Decline." This year is still very much up in the air obviously but I've even cooled off a bit on a lot of current releases that I immediately loved. The new Silver Mt. Zion is not so good after many listens and the new Islands isn't quite as exciting as I thought at first. I still like these albums a lot but right now there hasn't been much this year that's completely grabbed me without letting go. Not at all like this point last year, that's for sure. I'm still putting my faith in Sigur Ros.

BLASPHEMER!

Actually I can understand how it could get dull for some. I'm still loving that record to death though. It will very likely be my #1 pick unless something (Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Mastodon, something else I don't know about) blows me away.

If all goes well, they should. They've already begun (or even finished) recording most of the songs and are expecting a release late this year. But nothing concrete yet.

It's scheduled for the summer, actually. It's pretty much finished so there's no real reason for it not to come out some time in the next few months. They're just finishing up some larger scale recording (there's a full orchestra/choir in at least one song) and general mixing and such. They start touring in June so it'll probably be done and out not long after.

Well you'll be sorry to know, in that case, that one of the band members told an Icelandic newspaper that all the lyrics will be "more understandable to the general public." I'm assuming that means the Icelandic public and, therefore, all Icelandic lyrics. I'm fine with that but I will miss the Hopelandic. I'm also praying he didn't mean the lyrics would be in English. That would be a really awful development.

Yeah the bits of Hopelandic in ( ) that kinda sound like English a bit in places are much better than any English lyrics ever.

No love for Evil Urges? I know it doesn't come out for a month, but it was upped on mediaf!re thread a while back, and I think it's awesome. Especially Highly Suspicous.

That Neil Diamond album really interests me, and I'm going to track it down sometime soon.  I've had a vague interest in his work ever since he was in a movie filmed in my old house, but never actually got around to checking anything out, beyond what few songs are commonplace.  This record just sounds like too much of a curveball to avoid.
