I am incredibly shocked to say that I actually enjoy the new Death Cab for Cutie album.  I hated Plans and thought the earlier stuff was at best "not bad" but really, the new one is... actually good.  Not amazing, not top 10, not even top 20, but also not something I won't ever listen to.

The world has turned upside-down.  Next thing you know, Sufjan Stevens will release an album I like and M. Night Shyamalan will do a good movie (seriously, The Happening looks so absolutely retarded).

Also, Will Oldham fans might want to check out the new Grand Salvo album, cheerily titled Death. Imagine a dark-hued children's story about a bunch of animals and a hunter, dealing allegorically with issues of growing up and leaving your friends behind, with the songs interspersed with narration read by the singer's father. Now imagine that as very beautiful instead of unbearably hokey.

I've heard that album quite a few times, due to my brother and some of my friends thrashing it. That 'henney buggey' tune has some enjoyable horns lines, I guess; overall it's as soggy as anything else Sufjan has ever done.

Admittedly his electronica album was ok.

Also, Spluff: I am aware that it's kind of a given that RTL/MOP/Metallica's First 4 is excellent, I just hadn't been reminded of that rather obvious fact for some time.

Speaking of Metallica; their promo machine for their new album is slowly swinging into gear, and the first samples are on the internet (along with some pretty terrible advertising that I really hope wasn't made up by the band). Sure, there's only about a minute of it, but based on that minute it's a good deal better then St.Anger, kind of sounding like a rocky, slightly simplified AJFA. The first 6 metallica albums are all at least quite good imo; as long as the new album is as good as Load I probably have my album of the year. I know, I have terrible music taste.

McTaggart: Sorry, I must've forgotten the "you must only ever have good things to say about bands" rule. I'll be sure to only ever have good things to say about stuff from now on, no matter how awful it is.

And one more thing! The new M83 is really good, not as good as Dead Cities but still seriously excellent. That'll be the electronica record of the year for me, at least, unless if Boards of Canada or Nathan Fake release an album.

I found Sufjan Stevens to be very immediate. There's a clarity in there which lets you hear just about everything on the first listen through, which helps.

I'm anticipating the new Opeth album myself.  I just recently came into possession of their discography and am looking forward to it.  Also, Warrel Dane of Nevermore releases his solo album in just a few weeks time.  I'm listening to it right now, and besides the anti-government rhetoric (though still with more than a few valid points), it preserves his unique vocal style and aura.

That said, more than a few bands I like are beginning development of a new album in '08.  Dream Theater goes into the studio in the fall, Redemption follows shortly thereafter, and Into Eternity are releasing a cancer concept album in August.  On the prog-metal front, its looking like a decent line-up.

Type "quack" into the box to get into their searchable database. With sordo, the mediafire thread is all but useless for leaks. That said, buy the album. I plan to buy the vinyl next month, it comes out in less than a week. JoA related bands are getting pretty popular now, word is getting round. But they're still perpetually broke because nobody actually buys any JoA related records. The fact that Tim sank a lot of time and money into Orchard Vale doesn't help their financial situation at all. Make Believe cancelled their only planned European tour for Of Course due to financial restraint, which is an awful shame. Tommydski, Astaldo and myself were supposed to catch them in Leeds, I can't remember whether we bought tickets or not.
It's reasons like this that I'm not going to be the guy who puts the new JoA in the mediafire thread where people are going to download it with no interest in purchasing it. Anybody who does intend to buy the album will probably seek it out on their own anyway.

It'd be nice to see those guys in Europe.

Seeing how there's been over 10 posts since those posts you're quoting, I think it's safe to say the thread is back on topic already. And on that note, I gotta say I'm really disappointed with the new Death Cab (not that I had high hopes) and fairly disappointed with the new Grails EP which really isn't all that interesting. The Grails is arguably more of a letdown considering how good their previous album was. The new Envy EP, "Abyssal," is, however, really excellent. It's an evolution into more intense realms from their last album, "Insomniac Doze," which was incredibly good Japanese screamo w/ heavily "post-rock" influenced instrumentals.

Maybe it needs to grow on me some more. Nothing grabbed me from the get-go like, for example, "Silk Rd." or the title track from "Burning Off Impurities." It's a pretty solid release and I don't dislike it but I guess I had high hopes that weren't fully met upon my initial listens. I still, however, have very high hopes for the new album due out later this year.

EDIT: I do, however, absolutely love 12-string guitar. Grails using it as a primary instrument makes them far better than a hell of a lot of standard post-rock fare. I'm a big fan of middle eastern music so anything with that flavor is automatically cool in my book. In that sense, the EP is pretty bad-ass and has some cool moments. On the whole, however, still not nearly as impressive as "Burning Off Impurities."

The new death cab is ok in my opinion. I like that song "I Will Possess Your Heart" a lot.

Maybe it's just me since I've been hearing a lot of positive things so far about this album but I listened to it in one sitting today and found myself underwhelmed and occasionally pretty bored. I do like "I Will Possess Your Heart" a lot though. It's definitely their strongest song in recent memory. Again, this is an album that I'm commenting on based upon early impressions. A few more serious listens and I'll have a more concrete impression of it and might change my mind.

I think my positive reaction to the new Death Cab mainly comes from how absolutely fucking much I hated most of their last two albums.  It's very rare a band that I seriously hate makes something where I go "What the... this is not bad at all!"

Wait, what the Hell?  How have I not heard about this?  Why are the Sun City Girls putting out a new album when they officially disbanded after Goucher died?  I am so confused.

I have no idea, I don't know a ton about the history of the Sun City Girls.  Until I find the blog that I got this from I can't provide a link, only a blurb from those idiots at Pitchfork.

What's more, the soundtrack to the upcoming Harmony Korine movie Mister Lonely, which features music by Spaceman and the Sun City Girls, now has a tracklist and release details. The soundtrack is scheduled for an April 22 release on Drag City, but the film will hit theaters at the end of March.

Also there was You're Never Lonely With A Cigarette which I just happened to find .

Recorded in July of 1988 during the sessions that produced Sun City Girls' most popular recording, these nine tracks represent the other half of songs which were originally prepared as a 2LP demo version of Torch of the Mystics for Placebo Records in 1989. The sequencing of all 20 tracks at the time was entirely different with the predominately instrumental tracks in this collection mixed in and around the mostly vocal tracks of what became Torch. Placebo went out of business shortly after this proposed 2LP idea was presented to them but Majora Records quickly stepped in to begin releasing most of the material. Included here are five tracks from early Majora singles: "100 Pounds of Black Olives" and "The Fine-Tuned Machines of Lemuria" (the complete unreleased 12-minute version) from the single "You're Never Alone with a Cigarette" and all three tracks from Record #1 of the double 7" Three Fake Female Orgasms -- "Plaster Cupids Falling from the Ceiling," "The Beauty of Benghazi," and "Souvenirs from Jangare." The short piece "Harmful Little Armful" is from the triple 7" box set Bruce Lee, Heroin, and the Punk Scene (from a Bay Area label Massacre at Central High) and rounding out the set are three unreleased studio tracks recorded the same day as much of the Torch LP: never before heard versions of "Amazon One," "Sev Acher," and "Wild World of Animals." This is the first of a multi-volume set of reissued singles, compilation, and unreleased tracks to be assembled and sequenced to play as full-length records. Vinyl editions may also appear in time.
