Perhapst's (John Moen from the Decemberists and the Jicks) self-titled debut is amazing. He comes across as a more playful Will Oldham combined with Carl Newman, folky but with plenty of enjoyable indie pop/rock sensibilities. On songs like the album's opener, "Quote" there is a significant Byrds/Tulsa vibe going around.

Radiohead - In Rainbows
Foo Fighters - Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace (or was this released late last year? I have no clue)
Less Than Jake - GNV FLA (got it for free (!!) at Warped Tour yesterday. As good as Hello Rockview and Pezcore)
I can't think of any more I have found to be exceptional, maybe the Red Album, but I liked the Blue one and the Green one better.

alright...my list is better looking now

(no particular order...yet)

portishead - third (another classic p'head album)
bottomless pit - congress ep (awesome followup to their great debut lp last year)
the blue seeds - s/t (nice folky female fronted band)
cold war kids - robbers and cowards (indie rock band of the moment...pretty solid album, pretty catchy)
the loose salute - tuned to love drummer from mojave 3's own band. lots of poppy tunes on here for summer. i'm not sure if this came out in 08 though. (mojave 3 evolved from Slowdive, interestingly)
MGMT - Oracular Spectacular (also a great summer album...is this band big yet?) this band actually has pretty weak lyrics, but the music/sound makes up for it.
thao nguyen and the Get Down Stay Downs - we brave bee stings and all (great folky singer/songwriter, she's really improved by leaps and bounds). her voice reminds me a bit of Cat Power, but the songs are not as downbeat.
atmosphere - when life gives you lemons, you paint that shit gold it's kind of like 90s rap never dried up and we started listening to songs about how krispy the guy is or watch what he can do with his feet! blah
envelopes - here comes the wind more of that indie pop shit. supposedly we are suppose to see a similarity to the pixies but i just dont see it other than the male/female singer with female bassist thing

i wanted to throw girl talk on here, but his samples are never long enough and it seriously sounds like he mixed it all together while doing a fat rail of coke. there's no time to get comfy to the beat before it changes to something else. also the whole rap lyrics/rock music thing is played out. i did like most of Night Ripper though. but another album of the same thing is kind of boring.

I'm gonna have to say though, Robbers & Cowards was a pretty terrible album. There were, like, two good songs worth listening to, ever. Born Ruffians did that whole gambit much better.

I started hating it too...and then for some reason I just kept listening. I don't really think it has any staying power, I might hate it a month from now but at the moment their two singles are really doing it for me.

I've only listened to the Fleet Foxes album a couple of times so far. It's good, I like it, it's pleasant to listen to, but I have a feeling I'm going to get bored of it after a while. There's just not much variety in the music, especially in the vocal harmonies: while they undoubtedly sing beautifully together, each song has basically the same vocal arrangement, which after a while makes it seem like not so much an essential part of the music, as just something pretty they decided to put on without bothering to put too much effort into it. Basically it's just not all it could be.

For the moment, though, I'm still enjoying it.

In retrospect I wouldn't call Vampire Weekend a good album, but it definitely has some spectacular tracks as far as I'm concerned. "Walcott" and "I Stand Corrected" are just plain infectious.

BTW, holy crap does At Mount Zoomer get better and better each time I listen. Right now that and Arm's Way are definitely contenders for my number one (I'm not going to count The Stand Ins until I've got it in my CD player), and just underneath them it's a war between Cut Copy, Hot Chip and The Dodos.

It's probably not the kind of music most people here listen to, but holy shit guys I've just listened for the first time to Roll With You by Eli "Paperboy" Reed & the True Loves and it's so damn good. Nothing ground-breaking, just great, tight, horn-driven 60s-style southern soul done the way it's meant to be done.

New Dears record in late October. It'll be called Missiles and from, what I've heard (i.e. "Breakdown in A Major) Lightburn has returned to the fine form of just about everything that was recorded before Gang of Losers. They've most likely made a Dears album and not a slightly unoriginal yet enjoyable pop album.

The first "single", "Break Down in A Major" can be found here. Words cannot describe it's awesomeness but it is a combination of the expansive and synthy epicness of "Where the World Begins and Ends", the more promising guitar moments from Gol ("The Highest" in particular) and the mild proginess of their Protest EP.

Guys, arguably the very best album of the year came out digitally (emusic and itunes I think) yesterday and will be out on vinyl very soon. It's Matthew Robert Cooper's "Miniatures." That name might not sound familiar to any of you. That's because he usually releases music under his moniker, Eluvium. That name might not sound familiar to you. If so, you probably don't like ingenious, beautiful, mesmerizing ambient brilliance. This new album consists of 9 relatively short tracks (it's only 33 minutes long) but each one is fantastic. Solo piano, sonorous organs, layers of fuzzy bliss, this release is an ambient fans dream come true. For real. Fans of Eluvium will definitely hear influences from the most recent Eluvium release, Copia, and from his earlier solo piano album but this really is something wholly new. He wrote these songs under his actual name because he saw this as something similar to, but separate from, what an Eluvium album should be. And it shows. This is something new and haunting and wonderful. Everyone should listen to this. It's nothing short of spectacular and it's probably my number one album thus far of 2008.

I bought Natacha Atlas's new album today. Again, probably not what most people here listen to, but it's really really good. She's dropped the beats for this one and gone all acoustic for a much more traditional middle-eastern sounding album - and it sounds just beautiful. Her voice, of course, is gorgeous.
