Right now I'm pretty sure that I won't be going. Probably about 90% sure. When I thought about travel costs, logding, food, activities, and everything it's going to add up to be too much for me right now. I currently have about $350 to my name, and a trip already planned.

If I can work a lot between now and then, maybe, but right now I think you can bet that I won't be there.

I am bumping this to say:

Damn it is getting hella close to the date you guys have this planned for. I mean, it's like what? 6 months away now? Everybody should pretty much know if they are coming or not.

And I won't be attending. I lost my wallet, and am currently sans id, and a social security card, and I kinda don't feel like getting an id any time soon. So, since I have no proof that I am who I say I am, and I am a US citizen, I have no way of getting a passport, or getting in and out of Canada.

We get cards?? Fuck, I don't even think I've ever seen mine. I can't remember when I didn't have the number memorised, although I guess I had to memorise it from something, but I do not remember a card at all.

I need to write home and ask my mom about this shit. WTF

Yeah I've got my original card from 1988. Its kinda cool actually, despite it not being laminated (which apparently is an illegal thing to do anyway according to the paper i had to pop it out of) it is extremely tough, and has been through the laundry in my wallet like 3 times. Of course I don't have to worry about the SSN card, since I also already have my passport.

Also, six months is feeling like a long ass time at the moment, this semester is gonna be so friggin looooong. I think I might actually cry the day classes end from relief. This is when college gets hard I guess.

you only need a passport if you're flying into canada, i think. if you're driving or taking a bus, a birth certificate/driver's license should suffice.
from what i recall that is how it works for canadians coming into the states, but it might be a bit different vice versa.

From the US State Dept. website:

Quote
ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS:   U.S. citizens traveling to Canada are required to show U.S. Government-issued photo ID and proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a birth certificate.

In addition, U.S. law requires that Americans entering the U.S. from Canada by air (including those returning by air from short trips to Canada ) must have a valid passport.  This requirement will be extended to sea travel (except closed loop cruises), including ferry service, and land travel by the Summer of 2008.  Until then, travelers entering the U.S. from Canada by sea and land must have government-issued photo identification and a document showing their U.S. citizenship (for example, a birth certificate or certificate of nationalization).

I think however that Canada now requires US citizens to have a passport upon entering their country now though from anywhere. At least, that's the way it was at the end of last summer when I went. I'd get the damn passport if I were you guys

It doesn't hurt at all. It's better to have one than to be turned around when you hit the border, to or from.

...I kinda don't feel like getting an id any time soon.

Uh, it's quite easy to replace your driver's license (I did so a few months ago for the same reason). And you need to get a new ssn asap to prevent identity theft. I know what it feels like after your stuff is stolen, so sorry you're having to go through that - it really sucks.

Oh man I never even thought of that. I'm so lucky I didn't get totally screwed over after my wallet was stolen with my social security card in it. Of course, this was a long time ago so it's not like I have to be worried about that specific event still, just it never occurred to me until just now how close I came to a really big problem.

I think you can get into Canada without a passport from the states, I just don't think you can get back into the states without your passport.
As such, I encourage you not to get your passports so smuggling you back accross the border can be an adventure!

Like with my uncle and his lunchmeat. Seriously.

When they ask you the questions when crossing the border, you answers should always be no.

"Do you have any illegal firearms or explosives?"
No

"Are you carrying any illegal immigrants on board your vehicle?"
No

"Do you have any fruits, vegetables or meat products in your vehicle?"
Yes, I mean no, shit!

He had to dump his bologna, true story.

When I came back from Spain, this girl who was in my group who I wasn't too fond of held us up re-entering the country because she declared her granola bars.
Snack granola bars.
Five out of six of which she'd already eaten.

I, on the other hand, smuggled in an extra hundred plus cigarettes and cigarillos more than I was supposed to be able to. I did not declare them.
I'm bad-ass like that.
Then I gave them away to friends and watched them choke on european smokes.
When deciding on which cigarettes to buy, I settled on the ones advertising '100% Negro Tobacco'.

Be careful who you are with as well.  A friend of mine told me that they stopped his father's car under the suspicion that his father was kidnapping his step brother when he was bringing him back to the states.  Said they had him holed up in customs for four hours.

Blue Kitty, why is your avatar giving that cat an epileptic seizure?

I have NOOOO idea how customs will be if I take a bus up all the way, but I don't really see the point of declaring food from Canada. BTW, yelley, figure anything else out about how you're getting up there? I want to buy tickets by mid-April at the latest, so whenever you find out anything, let me know. ^_^ (Also, if it's a no, I may fly, because it costs about the same on Skybus and will only take an hour to get to Niagara Falls, NY, but I need to know so I can buy tickets either way.)

When I went to visit my sister back in April/May, we went on a booze cruise to France.  I stocked up on some seriously good wine; I think I spent around 300 Euros.  Stashed them in my backpack, came back to Canada.  They stopped the family in front of me, and the group of guys behidn me.  But not me.  Woo!

Dear English types (and other football fans),

Toronto FC are home during the weekend of Tronnocon (the saturday afternoon, in fact). I know a few of us were kinda bummed the Blue Jays weren't in town. Anyone up for some soccer?

I have no clue how much tickets are, sadly. They only prices they have up are for season tickets (single game tickets go on sale next month).

I can't expect they'd be that much. The most expensive tickets for the Revs are like $35 US.

The stadium is nothing like the Rogers Centre or the Air Canada Centre.  Didn't cost hundreds of millions, no huge company trying to rape the fans for as much cash as possible.  Beer is not cheap, though.

Can someone make sure when I'm jumping around that I don't trip and fall into the aisle in front of us? Because knowing me, I would do that. Especially after a few beers.

Edit: for spelling. Thanks Tommy! Tripping into a row is different than tripping onto an island.

Not at all, just don't stand up. It is perfectly possible (and normal) to cheer from a seated position.

The real impediment to cheering is having stuff in your hands. Yelling YEAH just doesn't feel right when your arms are in your lap attempting to balance various foodstuffs.
