And yes, anyone who hates The Smiths isn't worth staying with...

You have better taste than your boyfriend.

Consider breaking up with him.

Truth.

Have you tried Belle and Sebastian?

I can't break up with him. He pays for my ridiculous habits (eating, living indoors, using electricity, ect.) Also, he is totally adorable.

He says the Smiths are "too depressing." He says the same thing about the Flaming Lips. He doesn't seem to understand why I think this hilarious when compared with him listening to Dashboard Confessional

It's worse than I feared...

There's a Stereolab album in the Mediafire thread that's pretty cool.  Do either of you like Yo La Tengo?  Stars are also pretty cool.

Seriously, Belle and Sebastian.  You both like Nick Drake.

Also maybe Yo La Tengo?  Seems like that would be weird enough for you but not-depressing enough for him.  Try Painful and Electr-O-Pura first.

If you like Looper "ok" then you will probably love Belle and Sebastian because they are much better.

Have you also considered possibly just not listening to music together?  I mean, I don't know, what's the big deal?  Can't you like, talk, or watch movies, or just not care about music when you're together?  If you live together, can't you use headphones?  If you guys really like each other, can't you "tolerate" anything the other wants to listen to as long as you, I don't know, take turns or whatever?  I hate to get all serious but if this is in any way a big deal then it does not bode well for your future relationship.

I'm not being pedantic here. I like both of these bands a good deal (well, the early years of both) but I cannot actually think of a single thing these bands had in common.

...

Gay.

I really didn't think different music tastes in a relationship were that big a deal. My lady and I listen to a fair few similar bands but where we differ, we at least pretend to tolerate. Well she never bags my taste because its good, but once in a while I have to give her a bit of a talking to. And we go along to eachothers shows, I took her to Andrew bird and she ended up loving it, she took me to Claire Bowditch and I thought it was ok.

Ah, healthy relationships!

True, tis awesome. But I seem to remember Mr. Lydon putting his name on pre-vandalized "punk" furniture not too long ago. You have to love the man, cynical bastard that he is.

The first whole PiL album I heard was That What Is Not when I was like 14.  Given that, it's kind of amazing that I ever gave them another chance, and realised that Metal Box was one of the best (arguably industrial) albums of the 70s.

Too bad most of everything else they ever did was "pretty okay" at best.

Ng, I'd recommend Marah and the National. And since you both like the Postal Service, check out William Fitzsimmons.

It's not a big deal at all. I mean, it is not like we regularly come to blows over what's on the iPod. We take a lot of long car drives together, and it would just be nice to have some more options that I can just queue up and not have to worry about whether or not he is getting totally sick of listening to my music and just won't say that he wants to hear something else.

I think her boyfriend will call The National "boring" and "depressing".  Calling it now.

Just to clear up this misconception now, I am a dude. Interesting consequence of this: by helping a gay guy find music to listen to with his boyfriend, you are all now gay by proxy. Faggots.

PS: Thank you for your help! I have a lot of options to check out here, and I'ma try 'em out on our road trip this weekend.

What about the Avalanches?  They're less overtly poppy than Daft Punk but pretty musically interesting, particularly if you like samples.  Also, Squarepusher, maybe?  Then again it doesn't sound like he likes long songs...

The Flaming Lips have many depressing songs.  "Jesus Shootin' Heroin", "Felt Good To Burn", "The Abandoned Hospital Ship", "Godzilla Flick", "Love Yer Brain", "Stand In Line", "You Have to Be Joking (Autopsy of the Devil's Brain", "They Punctured My Yolk"...

You do realise they made albums before The Soft Bulletin right?  Some of us would even say that everything before that album is their best work.

I will take the eight albums leading up to The Soft Bulletin over the ones following it any day of the week.

This does deny that The Soft Bulletin itself is, in fact, their best work.
