You would be crazy and the rest of us would laugh at you, but yes, you could say that.

I know a lot of people who were Flaming Lips fans way before The Soft Bulletin who all agree with me that their older material is much stronger.

Granted, most younger people whose first exposure to the Lips was Soft Bulletin hold it up as some kind of industry standard of what Jesus himself sounds like, but some of us liked it when the Lips were more psychedelic, more noisy, had better lyrics, and were on more drugs.

If I want to listen to post-Zaireeka Flaming Lips sounding music, I'll listen to post-Boces Mercury Rev, as they did it better.

It's too late for my advice, but here it is anyway!
Differing music taste can be a real killer in some situations. Just don't play anything of your own, pretend to like everything they like, when they press you for details on what you listen to, just say 'oh, you'll hate it, it's not important.'

That said, this is a recommendation thread, so I'm just gonna shoot at Neil Young.

The Flaming Lips have many depressing songs.  "Jesus Shootin' Heroin", "Felt Good To Burn", "The Abandoned Hospital Ship", "Godzilla Flick", "Love Yer Brain", "Stand In Line", "You Have to Be Joking (Autopsy of the Devil's Brain", "They Punctured My Yolk"...

You do realise they made albums before The Soft Bulletin right?  Some of us would even say that everything before that album is their best work.

No, I've been asleep under a rock for the past 20 years (actually I wasn't born 20 years ago, but let that rest). Yes I do recognize that they have made a lot of albums prior to The Soft Bulletin and the happy-songs-statement was obviously an exaggeration. "Do You Realize???" is perhaps the most depressing song ever made. But! I'm almost sure that the author of the thread listens primarily to Yoshimi and The Soft Bulletin and/or War of the Mystics since they are the most popular of their entire body of work. I haven't heard the older work either, because it's pretty hard to get a hold of, but sure, I know a lot of you prefers most popular indie-bands' older work to their newer (Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire, Black Heart Procession and I could go on).

Using the statement that music is "hard to get a hold of" when it's still in print and readily available for purchase right off of amazon.com is a weak excuse for not listening to something. I'm sure that what you mean by it being hard to obtain is that you can't easily download it for free. If you really liked the Lips that much, you would probably want to explore their back catalog, and give the band a little bit of money for their hard work. People used to actually buy records before hearing them to see if they liked them. I really wish people would still do this on occasion especially if they claim that they really like a band.

As far as music for the original poster, I don't think I saw anyone mention Spoon or Band of Horses yet. Those are pretty popular "indie" bands that a lot of people enjoy. Or maybe try Fleetwood Mac. They have both female and male lead vocals and slower and faster songs. Plus they are classic.

It's pretty hard to get hold of here. Since buying my copies of Transmissions.. and Clouds.. I haven't seen them on shelves anywhere. Amazon still counts as one hell of a lot of effort for some people.

I meant what I wrote. I buy all of my music from local stores and sometimes mail-order, but yeah I'm only 17 so Amazon isn't really an option. But thanks for clearing that up.

Dude, you're a fucking idiot.  Just sayin'.

I don't prefer bands' music based on when it was made, I enjoy it based on how much I enjoy it.  I think Neon Bible is a hell of a lot better than Funeral.  I haven't liked Modest Mouse since 1998 and even back then I tolerated them at best so that's a stupid point.  The latest Black Heart Procession album just plain isn't quite as good as their first four.  And since when are they "popular" anyway?

Coming in here and posting big sweeping statements about "you guys" is a quick way to get you laughed at and your idiotic statements sigged so they are never forgotten.

You also preferred Mr. Beast to Young Team.  Which is not only preferring a more recent Mogwai album but isn't as much of a sacred cow.  I know your point is more general than a few examples could prove, but still.

If you're old enough to use the internets you are old are enough to use Amazon! Surely someone you know has a credit/debit card and would be willing to place an order for you, provided you pay for it up-front.

You also claim to buy a lot from local shops. I don't know exactly how your local record shop works,  but every one I've set foot in (quite a few) has been able to special-order anything you want that they don't have, and usually they only charge a minimal fee, if any, for you doing this.

I smell a sitcom!
Actually from what I've heard I like Mr. Beast more, too.  I could probably listen to Young Team ad nauseum until I'm convinced of its superiority and/or do whatever it is Focus on the Family thinks is gay-ifying America's children to myself if it would sell a pilot, though.

Just sayin'? Yeah I guess you are "just" saying.

You know as well as me that there is a big tendency for people to like earlier material of any band in "the indie-scene". Both Modest Mouse and Arcade Fire are condidered sell-outs by a lot of people, just because they aren't throwing out anthems like "Paper Thin Walls" or "Laika" any longer. The whole "the more obscure it is, the better it is"-thing. It wasn't exactly directed at you. But I guess you speak for the whole board.

adara>> Yeah I tried that but it would take them four weeks and cost me double price so I guess I wasn't that wild to listen to something I had never heard before and only a weak impression of. But that isn't really what this is about, is it? I'm not that wild about the Lips anyway.

Actually, I don't know anything about "the indie scene" because I'm not in it.

And I wasn't speaking for the whole board, but I've been here long enough to know that this isn't a board made up of generic "indie scene" clichés who always say "They were so much better before they sold out."

Seriously.  Lurk more.

Does that actually happen in the indie scene? Because it happens a hell of a lot in the metal scene.

Anyways, the reason why people prefer bands earlier stuff is because it is better.  I will always prefer behemoths grom to the apostasy, and amon amarth's arrival of the fimbulwinter to 'the crusher'. However it doesn't happen with every band.

There's a common misconception that this forum is a hub of what I have heard called 'Hipsters' who all have 100% overlap of tastes and adhere to a rigid and predefined set of values including but not limited to the unrealistic "their earlier stuff was better" straw man. Sadly, as convenient as it might be to be able to pigeon-hole everyone under such generalisations, this forum appears to be an honest exception. I'd go as far to say that the truism would be closer to "their better stuff was better". Obviously, it remains up to each individual to decide what is considered better, yadda yadda yadda, opinion is subjective, in the eye of the beholder etc.

Likewise, the overwhelming majority of people on this forum don't judge music by its popularity or lack of. I'm probably the most easily disgruntled person on this forum when it comes to commercial success and even I have ulterior motives beyond the weak "I liked them before they were popular" malarkey.

I agree - I'm not trying to generalize this forum or its users. And as far as the truism goes, it's obvious that as zerodrone says, I'd rather listen to something that I enjoy, than what is commonly referred to as masterpieces and recognized works that I might not necessarily care for. That's a big d'uh. But being threatened by you zero isn't the coolest thing in the world, especially not with petty flaming and humiliating sigs. It's not the most terrifying thing in the world, being humiliated on the world wide web. I'm just trying to have a good time. Maybe you should too.

Dude, I have SO MANY artists in my iTunes playlist that you can dance to, but many people here would not approve of a good amount of them.  However, in the interest of stirring the shit...

Benny Benassi, D-Devils, Bob Sinclair, Cascada, Alice Deejay, Angelo Venuto, Darude, DHT, Eric Prydz, Fedde Le Grande, Lucus Prata, Newton, Outhere Brothers, Peter Luts & Dominico, Sash!, Zombie Nation, Captain Jack, DJ Mystik, 4 Strings, Freezepop, Ellen Allien, and Apparat all make some pretty excellent dance party music.

Oh wait, I just thought.

If I know this forum at all, I will be praised for listening to Ellen Allien, Apparat, Freezepop, and possibly Zombie Nation, Captain Jack, and Darude, while Cascada will hurt my name pretty badly, and possibly DHT as well.

Please god tell me somebody has at least HEARD of some of the others.

As a hint, Newton did that song they used in a Pepsi commercial, Benny Benassi does some pretty awesome house covers of songs (California Dreaming, Seven Nation Army, etc.), the D-Devils made the Dance with the Devil they do in Acapulco, Angelo Venuto redid Sweet Caroline, Eric Prydz made Call on Me, and DJ Mustik did the Butterfly song from DDR.

Please?

The Spike Jonze Director's Label DVD has this video with commentary from Walken himself.

So great.

Benny Benassi did "Satisfaction" which is tremendously grating, as is "Call On Me" which also has a borderline offensive video. We know them, but jeez man. At the very least listen to some MSTRKRFT or Shout Out Out Out Out or something.
