Loud music for feeling mopey and angry
« on: 08 Feb 2008, 21:09 »

So I'm feeling rather mopey right now, having to do with the accumulated stress of school, the feeling that I've been born about a decade and a half too late, an Office of Student Life whose director is at odds with the best local band in town, etc. etc. etc. This forum is not LiveJournal, so let's get on with it.

I'm mopey, but too angry to listen to Belle and Sebastian. Thus, I need loud, somewhat mopey yet angry music to listen to. Any suggestions? Right now, I have Silkworm's "In The West", Burning Airlines' "Identikit" and Archers of Loaf's "Vee Vee" in heavy rotation, if that gives you some clue to what I'm looking for.

Shit man, just go listen to some post-metal. I don't think it's like any of the shit you mentioned, but it's loud and heavy.

Specifically Australasia by Pelican (that album is far more uplifting than I remember). Or go listen to Blessed are the Bonds by The Pax Cecilia. Good stuff.

Sludge is hardly mopey.

okay, i need that album really badly.

also anything else weezer has ever produced.

maybe sunny day real estate, but it's still a bit mellow.

anything off in utero.

isn't this the entire grunge movement?  and the entire post-hardcore/early emo thing, as well?

Lightning Bolt is the best. I hardly listen to them, but one time when I was feeling frustrated and angry, I listened to Wonderful Rainbow twice. In a row.

These are the first three that popped into my mind after Pinkerton. I am kind of an expert at this music due to the extraordinary amount of repressed anger and sadness that I have been keeping inside me for nearly twenty years.

Pinkerton = old news. Plus, my angst isn't driven by girls, I've been doing well in that dept. for over a year now.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll be sure to check them out later.

the extraordinary amount of sexual frustration that I have been keeping inside me for nearly twenty years.

Hm, I thought I'd managed to keep this largely repressed beneath the repression. Oh wait, I talk about it all the time.

None of those three albums are girl-specific. The Okkervil River one is about a girl, kind of, but the fact is that all three are great loud records to shout along to when you're bummed out.

If that isn't what you're looking for I guess you could always go listen to some early punk bands. Wire, Television, you know. They were bummed out about stuff and they generally responded by yelling a lot or playing guitars real loud. Alternatively, you could try listening to a lot of CCR and just not worry about anything else ever again. This works surprisingly well.

I have (and love) Yank Crime, In On The Killtaker, and 13-pt. Plan... Hmm, maybe the Nation of Ulysses is what I need. I don't have (but should get) Wrong, Gentlemen, and Raw Power, and I can't stand the Blood Bros.

And yes, Pinkerton is an option (and yes, still great), so I might give it a listen later.

Ahh. Missing the mopey.  Although if I'm in a bad mood, and annoyed at the fact of being in a bad mood, I generally allow myself to listen to some meathead metal.

The Land of Rape and Honey is good for that, but I don't know people's feelings about Ministry.

Is that the specific sell-by-date on records now?

If Pinkerton were a young woman, she would be too old to participate in child beauty pageants. If it were scotch, it would likely have been consumed already. If it were a dog, its owners would be studiously avoiding any media related to Old Yeller. If it was a user on this forum, it would know its own music and lyrics by heart.

Is there some reason Pantera won't suit this purpose?

Because as of yet the OP hasn't violated the Geneva convention?

Seriously. Please keep setting these jokes up, people.

A fair point, but this is, after all, a new user. And since when did knowing something by heart make it any less comforting? For me, Pinkerton is one of the most comforting albums BECAUSE I know it so well. It's like sleeping in your own bed.

I was otherrealchris on the old weezer boards. God, those times were fucking terrible. Low GPAs, pining over girls I would never meet, board assholes continually ostracizing me, BuddyHolliday... Well, I'm glad that's over.

When I first got Pinkerton, I love love loved it to death. I haven't really played it in a while because I don't really listen to Weezer as much as I used to, but I'll be sure to give it a spin later today.

Ah, memories.

Do you mean before the Make Believe overhaul? I was on there - as, shockingly, DynamiteKid - from about 2003 until the revamp.

Honestly, it was the most pretentious, elitist pile of shit of a board I've ever been on, but it held a place in my heart nontheless.

Australasia is good music if I want to improve my mood.  It's so...uplifting.

I like Weakling, Dead as Dreams, Joy Division (probably Unknown Pleasures, specifically "New Dawn Fades") or maybe Neil Perry's discography.  Also, Buried Inside and Kylesa (at least the latter's first, self-titled, album) are pretty good hardcore/metal bands.  And Acedia, who were a local band when I was in Highschool.

I have been avoiding this thread because I don't want to suck! But I really do have to say, that despite some TERRIBLE suggestions, The Afghan Whigs "Gentlemen" is pretty much the exact album that the original poster is looking for. I pretty much refuse to listen to anything else when I am "mopey and angry". I can still feel bits inside me skipping and jumping around when I play that album. It's like my internal organs are each trying to rock the fuck out.
