I don't feel like anyone is taking this news badly, except for maybe the OP (If you aren't, I'm sorry I said that.). This thread is really just a reason to wonder why they took so long to let the world know they aren't a band called Godspeed You! Black Emperor anymore. It's interesting that they took so long to finally agree that the band was done with. Were they milking the fans' collective hopes and dreams? Maybe!

Milking them to what end? If you've said your band is on hiatus then there's not much reason for you to go the next step and say you've split up. You won't be getting offers of gigs you have to keep turning down or anything like that since you've let it be known you aren't active for the moment. The only benefit to yourself would be to no longer be pestered with questions about whether you were coming back or not, and that balanced against cutting yourself off from the possibility of maybe doing something again probably isn't much of a gain.
