I used to like green day. I still like to listen to one or two of their earlier tracks, and a couple off warning.

I don't like much of it anymore, but I could pick some favourite albums it would be the first album (the one which was 3 EPs), and insomniac.

I still like Green Day. There's nothing wrong with Green Day, people - or at least no more than any other pop punk band, before anybody comes in and goes 'blah blah greenday r shit cuz dey r pop punk' or some other elitist bullshit no-one cares about - although i was disappointed by the very choreographed nature of their last tour.

I still think American Idiot is a hell of an album, but it's been overplayed - and in all honesty, I always thought that Nimrod was the better album. It doesn't have the widescreen scope, but I think it's the stronger album; better songs, better hooks, and a lot more varied. Plus Insomniac is very underrated, it's quite dark and nasty, and I like that.

And however's started this account really, really isn't funny.

I saw them on the American Idiot tour, actually. They played for damn near two hours, and most of it was pre-Warning songs. A good time. They can still put on a hell of a show, dudes.

Nimrod was my first green day album. I used to blast it out like every single day. Then I got international superhits, the rest and then american idiot.

I have to say I wasn't that impressed with american idiot. I dunno, I just don't listen to green day anymore..It's got nothing to do with elitism, I don't think- I listen to other bands with the same amount of mainstream-icity.

I guess it's just one of those bands I kinda grew out of, and can't really listen to anymore.

Anyways, I saw them at Milton Keynes, on the american idiot tour (I think), and they ruled. Apart from hard fi. I don't care what anyone says, green day are an awesome live band.

bbq, for what it's worth, I wasn't accusing you of being elitist at all. I was referring more to the people on this forum who actually would sneer at Green Day, who the original post is referring to.

As for a good live band... well guys, I ask you.

At your gig, did he...

 - Make 'King For A Day' last for about eight minutes, incredibly tediously, ditto for 'Hitchin' A Ride'?
 - Spray the audience with a super-soaker?
 - Get kids onstage to play in the band and give one of them a guitar?
 - Wear a crown?
 - Have a man in a rabbit costume come out and screw around before the gig?
 - In a hideously ironic moment, say, 'whatever bastard is in power always stay true to yourself and be an individual'?

Yeah. All that happened at mine. And at all the ones I've asked anyone else about too.

The last tour wasn't a punk rock show. Sure, it was competent. But there was a time when Green Day were an out of control live band and each show was different and it was fun. Now it's a charade.

I look on, incredibly intrigued, at what they are going to come up with to follow that album and tour... their Final Cut to their Wall, if you will.

Hey, alt account - learn to spell and use proper grammar. No need to make youself look even more like a dumbass. And zerodrone is right - TRY HARDER.

On the topic of Green Day, I find their older stuff to still be quite fun. Even Warning is still a fun album. American Idiot is pretty blah, though, and seriously overplayed.

Also, no shit it wasn't a punk show. My Chemical Romance opened.

Yep, all of that but he got a kid to spray the audience with a supersoaker, and he also masturbated onstage.

Don't worry, I didn't think you were accusing me of being elitist. And it would be Ok anyways, because I know I am slightly elitist.

Personally, I think New Found Glory are extremely boring.  Green Day's new stuff is pretty boring, too.  I liked it better when they wrote songs about smoking pot and masturbation.  Dookie is my favorite album.

All that happened in New Jersey when i saw them.  It was a ton of fun.  I think it was good too because it was just a few months after American Idiot came out and all that shit didn't go to Billy Joe's head yet.  They played for at least two hours, and most of it was pre-American Idiot.  Sugarcult & New Found Glory opened, both sucked.

i saw them in glasgow in 2005, and it's one of the best shows i've ever been to. i know it was staged and theatrical, but i don't care, was worth the 600 mile round trip to see them. new found glory opened that one aswell, they were ok, nothing amazing.

they're one of the few bands from my early teens that i still listen to, my favourite album is probably nimrod, due to the variety of it and it's got some great songs. american idiot is pretty good, but as quite a few people have already said, overplayed.

I still spin Insomniac now and again, but I generally don't listen to Green Day much at all these days. It's not that I don't still like them but rather that since they were the first punk band I ever had an album by and I completely fell in love with punk all their songs that I like are so ingrained that I don't need to play them much at all. I wouldn't bother seeing them live either, but that's because I just don't enjoy massive gigs enough to warrant the cost.

I never really liked their material on Lookout all that much though, I actually thought they became a better band once they made the move to a major. Green Day just seemed to work better when they were slicker, much as I do love other more ramshackle pop punk bands. They lost me after Warning though, I thought it an alright record and I wouldn't have liked them to have kept replicating the music they made in their twenties as they aged but it just wasn't doing it for me anymore.

They are one of the first bands that I liked so much, I bought a cd, I bought all of their cd from the compliation 1039/SOSH to Bullet in a Bible. I still enjoy it sometimes but not as much as two years ago when I was obsessed by them.
My favorite albums are Insomniac and Nimrod, I don't really know why though, maybe the mood of the albums.
I went to their concert the 4th of September 2005. It was actually my first concert ever and it was really good. Anti-Flag were a guest band and Jimmy Eat World was the opener. I still keep a great memory of that concert.

Green Day used to have a practice at their live shows where they would stop playing in the event of people falling, getting too rowdy or starting violent mosh pits. I doubt they still do this with the size of their crowds these days, but from the way people talk about them, they excel at fan service, something people tend to forget when they achieve the success of Green Day.

So here's to Green Day! Your music may be boring and overplayed, but I hear you are good people.

If you only count bands from after 1990 that most people have heard of, Green Day is one of the best bands in the world.

If you count more than that, they're only pretty good with one great album and a few more really good tracks.

there is SOOOOOOOOO MUCH better political punk out there

greenday is mtv political punk

all their politics is ill researched and always follows the current mainstream mtv trend of politics

watch some cspan greenday!

no seriously, fuck this greenday thread

greenday shames a glorious potentially world impacting genre and now "punk" is turning
into a barrel of shit because kids all over the world when they think punk are thinkin

yeah, Green Day sucks now and their politics are weak, at best. However, i would humbly ask you to not write off their entire discography because they suck now.

please, just listen to Kerplunk. there isn't an iota of anything resembling politics on that entire album. it's just a bunch of shitty rock songs about love, drugs, insomnia, and the "what now?" feelings of a post-highschool teen.

things we can all relate to.

if not even one song on that album speaks to you personally, then you were born an adult and never experienced adolescence. which is a real shame.

there is SOOOOOOOOO MUCH better political punk out there
greenday is mtv political punk
all their politics is ill researched and always follows the current mainstream mtv trend of politics
watch some cspan greenday!
no seriously, fuck this greenday thread
greenday shames a glorious potentially world impacting genre and now "punk" is turning
into a barrel of shit because kids all over the world when they think punk are thinkin
ofgreenday instead of brilliant punk philosophers like joe strummer, jello biafra, patti smith,
dylan, mc5, and so much more
but no, its "bullet in a bible" and the very very very typical "bush = suxx0rz" crap

Green Day was never political punk. They're still not political punk. The have previously written songs about personal politics, but the message 'BUSH SUCKS' hasn't been present on any album cuts. There was a song recorded for a compilation, but that song is so vague that you couldn't really call them out on it if it not for the title of the compilation it appeared on.
American Idiot wasn't a 'political' album in the sense of the word that you seem to be familiar with. I have trouble taking your post here seriously because every line sounds ridiculously absurd. American Idiot was an album about being American, and an idiot, with some angst thrown in for good measure. Some political statements appear on the album because that's the context. There was a war going on at the time, so of course that is going to be mentioned. But first and foremost, it's a concept album about being an american living in the suburbs. I don't particularly like the album, but even at a cursory glance of the lyrics online, that much is obvious. Saying that they have "ill informed politics" when all they do is state some facts is pretty weird.

Now, as for that claim about "punk" being a "potentially world impacting genre"...
The examples you listed were never really a part of that genre.
Claiming that band that isn't punk is destroying the credibility of punk music is completely insane. Punk is and always has been about subversive activity. Green Day releasing albums isn't going to make bands that are genuinely about making waves any less credible. They likely don't even sound like Green Day.
The best punk bands have resolve. The only way they're going to lose credibility is if they lose their resolve. Green Day releasing American Idiot hasn't made people respect genuine punks any less because they're from two separate worlds. The existence of American Idiot didn't suddenly make ex-Fugazi members come out, eat meat and stamp their faces on Nike ads. Green Day are not "shaming punk bands everywhere" any more than you are.

Claiming that Green Day suck because they don't have the punk ethic is ridiculous, because that's never what they were about. If you're going to hate on a band, hate on them for a legitimate reason. Dislike them because you find the music boring, Dislike them because you can't stand their front man, dislike them because they're unoriginal and other acts have done the same thing much better. Don't try to makeup some bullshit excuse for your hate.

Upon reviewing your post for the third time, I think you were joking. But I'm gonna go ahead and post this anyway, because whether you were joking or not, it's relevant.

joe strummer, jello biafra, patti smith, dylan, mc5

All of those people mentioned above recorded for major labels. If you think their ethical or political stance was any more or less valid than Green Day, you are mistaken.

I wonder what their collective net worth is and how that would look compared to Green Day's?

There's likely some kind of correlation to be found in there.

I think greenday is a pretty cool guy, eh makes plitically fueled songs to get attention and doesn't afraid of anything.
