Looking for stand-alone music editing software

I started taking an introductory audio editing class at school this semester, and have been thoroughly enjoying it.  So much so, in fact, that I went out to download the software we used in class, Pro Tools LE , so that I could mess around with it on my own time.  All is good until I try to run the software, at which point I get an error saying that no Pro Tools hardware is connected, and because of this it will not run.  I somehow doubt there's any hope of getting Pro Tools hardware on my MacBook Pro, and even if there were I wouldn't be able to get it through Azureus.  Being in college, a legitimate copy of Pro Tools + associated hardware is distinctly out of reach

What I'm looking for now, if anyone would be able to point me in the right direction, is a stand-alone audio editing software for either OS X Tiger or Windows XP (I can emulate).  Features I'm hoping for are gain adjustment, fades, splicing tracks, and maybe some equalization control (there may be other important features I'm not aware of, though I'm likely not far enough into my course to know about them yet). 

Alternatively, if there's a way to get around the hardware requirement in Pro Tools (the version I have is 7.4), that would be great as well.  Much thanks in advance for any help you're able to offer.

Audacity is a pretty good open source program for basic needs. It seems to cover most of the stuff you want from a program.

Beyond that, I only have experience with Cubase (which I wouldn't really recommend unless you want to be doing midi stuff too) and Ableton Live (which is great, but isn't really primarily an audio editing package in the sense you seem to be talking about).

I'd go as far as to say Audacity is one of the best open source programs I've seen out there.

I will third the Audacity recommendation.

I might recommend downloading the beta (1.34) version as opposed to the stable (1.26) version, b/c the beta has some really great new features and I have never had any problems with it stability wise.

Catacombs:
Protools LE won't run without an Mbox.  I can't dual boot (get system 9 to run as well) your macbook can you?  Because in that case you could download protools free.
