Cool Edit Pro is a crapload better than Audacity but its not free :(

Audacity is THE best free program. Period. But it'll probably be a step down from what you're used to since Pro Tools is (snicker) a Pro's program.

Thanks for all the replies, I'll be sure to check each out. 

As for Garage Band, I honestly never bothered to figure out what it was, thought it seems I probably should have.  From poking around in it now the controls seem hugely different from what I've grown accustomed to, but I'm sure I can find a guide for it online somewhere.

GarageBand is pretty good. I've used it to record my EP and most of the album that's not quite done.
