Pitchfork.tv
« on: 04 Mar 2008, 13:53 »

Has anyone else read this news article on Pitchfork yet? I am pretty danged excited, mostly because of this:

Quote from: P4K
In addition, Pitchfork.tv will become the first online video channel to screen full-length feature films, vintage concerts, and music DVDs free of charge. From the Pixies' 2004 reunion tour film LoudQuietLoud and Todd Phillips' notorious GG Allin documentary Hated, to Jimmy Joe Roche & Dan Deacon's acid-drenched visual art piece Ultimate Reality, Pitchfork.tv will highlight a different film each week in its entirety.

What do you guys think of this idea?

Also, don't turn this into a Pitchfork-bashing thread, please.

I'm skeptical of the business potential, but positive to, you know, the general idea. Is it going to be a subscription based service, or paid for by advertising?

It sounds like a pretty exciting concept, if a little ambitious.  They're a bit sketchy on the details, but I guess if anyone has the built-in audience needed to pull this off, it's Pitchfork.    I hope they can do it, as long as they don't go the way of MTV and VH1.  Then again... a dating show featuring an 80's indie rocker way past his prime (Gibby Haynes?  Hell yes) would be pretty cool.

Also, don't turn this into a Pitchfork-bashing thread, please.

I can't bash them nearly as much now that Tom Ewing is a regular writer/reviewer for them.

Reason this can work:

http://revision3.com/
http://revision3.com/
http://revision3.com/

It seems like that site has mostly tech/quoting-Will-Ferrel-as-a-substitute-for-wit videos, and was founded by the Digg dude.  As popular as Pitchfork and independent music have become, we're talking completely different audience sizes here.

If they're playing Hated, they're probably worth checking out.

I don't get to see a lot of the bands I'd like to see because I'm underaged and living in Australia. Provided my ISP doesn't screw me around this could be pretty awesome.

I'm in the same position and thinking exactly the same thing. Maybe they'll broadcast sets from the various Pitchfork Festivals? That would be cool, they always have awesome line ups.

It's on! I figured I'd bump this thread instead of starting a new one. I just started watching so I don't really have much of an opinion yet. The layout seems pretty nice.

I'm not a huge fan of the auto-starting video, even if it is Radiohead.  However, loudQUIETloud completely redeems them.

This looks like it'll be pretty cool.  I just wish that Pitchfork liked Muse so they would show HAARP. :|

It's pretty cool.  loudQUIETloud is not nearly as interesting as I think it could have been.  I mean, a sober Kim Deal?  The most pressing issue on the tour is that the drummer was taking VALIUM?!  Christ, I take Valium for anxiety, it's not exactly a big deal.  And his dad fucking died.  That would make me anxious too, if my dad weren't a complete fuckup.

The music video part is okay, I guess, but I mean, that's what YouTube is for.  "Graveyard Girl" is as good a video as it is a song.  And it's cool they put a Negativland video on there.

I hope they show the They Might Be Giants documentary sometime, even if you don't like their music it is REALLY fascinating.

I went to this site for the first time today and was pleasantly surprised to see The Thermals on their "Don't Look Down" series.  That version of "No Culture Icons" is one of the best live ones I've heard.

Also the interviews with Liars from "Juan's Basement" are hilarious.

That Thermals thing was awesome. I liked Hutch's outfit. Also, Kathy's hair is pretty adorable.

This is actually really quite excellent for a pitchfork production. Really doesn't redeem them though.

I just watched the Beach House videos and though I absolutely love their new record the girl is really really creepy-looking. And the "Gila" vid is sort of just like "okay what the hell".

I'm super pumped on pitchfork.tv...

It's not that hard of a formula... let the music determine the content. But actually having it, and having it run smoothly

my god.

Awesome.
