I find nothing wrong with the movie as it is, it's still wonderful and touching and a step away from the traditional romantic cliches and I adore it for that. I'm just a sucker for those kinds of things. I agree with you to be totally honest. Their relationship was beautiful, and the fact that they could walk away like that makes it all the more heartfelt.

Oh I totally get the forbidden love that can never be consummated thing. In this case, I couldn't escape the feeling that the fact that the love wasn't consummated was less about the characters being stoic in the face of the irreconcilable fates, and more about the director being all "Look at me, I'm going to to give you an unconventional romantic musical where the characters don't make whoopy and end up with there ill-suited former significant others in the end."
I guess what I'm trying to say is when it comes to romances, I like the ones where the characters are so inflamed by their love they do rash things that they later come to regret. Unlike this one where the affection is acknowledged but never acted upon. Too much like real life :)
But that's totally just me. And I still liked the movie.
Prince of Space:
I tried searching for 'once' too, and didn't even find *this* thread until I came into this section of the board.
Anyway, it's a beautiful movie! The relationship between the two main characters is just lovely. I think it was fantastic that they didn't sugar coat it and give it a 'Hollywood' ending. I'm a sucker for sappy romances, but the 'more realistic' ones are sometimes better.
The soundtrack is great and I would even go so far as to say it may even be able to stand alone...or at least mostly. I've seen the movie, so I suppose I'm biased. The way they harmonize makes me melt and the lyrics aren't too bad either...but I suppose it means more to me after following the characters.
