Don't know if anyone else has this game, or has even heard of it, but I've been playing it again recently (on an emulator) and damn, it's so freaking awesome. For those who aren't aware of this game (and it's not-quite-as-good-but-still-awesome prequel) then it's basically a pretty huge RPG that was on the GBA. Huge, HUGE puzzles, lots of epic trekking, a pretty sweet plot involving the 4 elemental lighthouses and a seal that was placed on alchemy, quite sweet battle animation and graphics for the GBA, not much in the way of character development maybe, but you still got really attached to them- the ending, where they're all finally rendered in some slightly better animation was EXCELLENT. I guess I'd also add that Starcraft, Fallout 2, Red Alert 2 and UT are also just as good, but yeah, Golden Sun 2 is an absolute monster of a game- the reason why I failed my final exams in year 12, but I seriously don't regret it.

Does anyone disagree/agree? I'm personally hoping that someone here will share my love/unhealthy obsession of this game, so that we can get all nerdy about it.

But you friend never let you borrow the game?
I let a friend borrow my copy. Somebody was invited to his house one day and they stole his gameboy, with my game inside it. And promptly sold it.

Both of the Golden Sun games were great. If you believe the rumors, Nintendo might be reviving the series on the DS soon.

That would be sweet. GS2 knocked my socks off. Its one of the few RPGs on GBA I still enjoy replaying entirely from time to time. Hopefully they'll do something interesting with the touch screen though, beyond the menus always on display, like Pokemon Diamond/Pearl.

Best game ever, IMO? Nah. Possibly the best game I played for GBA, though.

This thread makes me hate my selling all of my GBA games a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Oh well, Advance Wars DS 2!

I completely forgot about Golden Sun.

Damn good game. Damn good series. Nintendo needs to add that to the list of games it likes making money on and make it. (here's to rumors being true)

I wish Squeenix would do that too.....I want another damned Chrono Game.

No. Simple enough.

Although..

Completely agreed. Trigger and Cross are two of the best RPGs ever made--actually, two of the best games ever made period. And I actually much prefer Cross over Trigger.

Unfortunately, similiar rumours have been around for a long, long time. Having said, despite having no money I would buy a DS instantly if GS3 came out on it.

Ditto.  I didn't dislike the game so much as it was just extremely slow-paced.  I stopped liking Squaresoft when the PSX age hit because their games just all drag ass.  They haven't gotten much better, either.  I don't like waiting 15 seconds for a fucking attack command, and that's just because the game takes 10 seconds to process the animation.

I found it to be one of the most fast-paced traditional RPGs there are. It doesn't take "10 seconds to process the animation." If you do nothing but 3rd-level attacks even, it's about 5 seconds for the whole string, tops. The Element system is brilliant--you can't just sit there and spam spells that do ridiculous amounts of damage.

And, people expected Cross to be a direct sequel to Trigger. It wasn't. It was, for most intents and purposes, a standalone game. Taken as such, it's an outstanding, brilliant, mind-blowing game, with a story far superior to the average movie or novel, and certainly to any Final Fantasy.

Trigger...it was an excellent game, but it did nothing new whatsoever, aside from the time-travelling thing.

No, taken as a stand-alone game it's still a mediocre game with a convoluted plot that makes no sense.

Taken as a sequel to Chrono Trigger, it's a massive disappointment with a plot that's tangentially related.

It fails on all counts.

(Also fight you SO HARD for saying it's better than Final Fantasy 6)

At least Chrono Cross had a pretty awesome group of characters.

I mean, what other game has a rabbit-girl with a huge pair of gloves, an undead clown skeleton, a sentient turnip, and a strange dimensional-rift-dweller
as playable characters?

(And I agree. Final Fantasy VI trumps all.)

I "played" Golden Sun 2 for about 10 mins.  During this time I did not actually get to play anything other than hitting a button to continue while the characters played out some extremely cheesy teen drama bullshit.  I really couldn't reset my GBA fast enough.

Also: Caspian, do you post on OCAU?  Either way, howdy!

I completely agree with Est.

As for Cross being better than the Final Fantasy series, I think you really need to watch your step. VII would have had an epic story if it didn't get mired into a bunch of crap about Sephiroth that made no sense at all to me. I think if it had stuck to playing around with Avalanche or whatever blowing up a corporation's power plants and just generally being eco-terrorists, it would have been great. I like games about corporations. There aren't many. Wall $treet Raider = <3

The Golden Sun series was the only RPG I've ever been able to play though. I loved it.

This was a few years ago though. I don't know if I'd enjoy it as much today.

I really enjoyed the first Golden Sun, but I went the eBay route for the second one.  I got it way too cheap and it came from China.  Yeah, fake and non-functional, super.  Sadly I never got around to trying again on it.

The Golden Sun games were a quite enjoyable mix of class-customization RPG and interesting puzzle design with an interesting risk/reward mechanic with regards to the Djinn. Do you leave them all on standby so you can use really powerful summons more often, or do you keep them constantly active so you get the stat boosts? Anyway, I would be quite pleased if Nintendo brought the series back, even if I don't exactly consider them the cream of the RPG crop.

The Golden Sun series isn't amazing, but it's very good. The mechanics were basic, but very well thought out which is way better than trying for a complicated mechanics scheme that turns out to be crap (FF8cough).

That said, I never finished Golden Sun 2. I loved the first one but found the second insufferable somehow.

For some reason these games had a lot of staying power for me.  I've played through both at least 3 times.  I would heap praise upon them, but I haven't played them in years, so I don't know how valid it would be. Golden Sun also had the unusual side effect of being the first game that I cared enough about to join a forum dedicated to it, hence introducing me to the ugly underbelly of the internets. Internet is a strange beast though and as it turns out it's ugly underbelly is like 96% of its surface area and body mass.
