That's pretty much what I meant w/ the Sunn O))) reference.

Having said that, a good way to do it at a low volume is by a cheap behringer sustainer/compressor pedal. You wouldn't really want to use it for anything else, but you do epic feedback, even on a clean channel, at really low volume levels.

I never really got my head around using guitar feedback, and I probably never will.
If I'm playing a ROKK solo, I can use it to sustain notes like Jeph said, but other than that it's pretty useless to me.

I mean, if you have a guitar with decent natural sustain, the feedback shouldn't even be that necessary IMO.
I even go so far as to using a noise gate if I play with a lot of gain. HA!

I studied a bit of Nakamura's NIMB at uni 2 years ago, he gets some beautiful sounds.

Feedback is so much easier with single coils.
Also feedback plus a trem pedal yields some fun results.

Feedback is really fun! If you control it well (and this is why I want a widebody semihollow + buckers like a 335 or Sheraton, guys, I am telling you!) you can not only sustain well, but if you get the sucker to feed back enough, you can get a nice crescendo effect that just plays 5ths above what you're actually playing.

That's a fun effect right there. If you really stay on top of it and don't let things get too far, you can play 5ths when just using one string. My friend's Sheraton is the most fun thing to fuck around with, oh my goddddddddd
