Hey guys! So I haven't seen any jazz posts yet so I thought I'd start one up!

Here are some artists to check out or potentially discuss in the thread:
Avishai Cohen
Kurt Rosenwinkel
Bireli Lagrene
Jimmy Rosenberg

These are newer artists but they're great! Especially Avishai and Bireli.

Anyone have any tips on playing Jazz guitar? I've been playing around with playing the melody using chords instead of leads and changing to a lot of different chords within a song which is a lot of fun..

Do you have a turntable?  I find that playing along with vinyl to be one of the most beneficial techniques to learning the style

There was a thread like this on 4chan this morning. I can't remember much of it, but when people stopped giving retarded answers like "SLAYER LOL", there was plenty of mention of Gillespie, Mingus, Brubeck, Coltrane, and others.

Note that none of those are guitar-centric. Then also note that Jack Bruce (think Cream, Graham Bond Organization, and some session work with Zappa) cites Beethoven as having some of the most badass basslines in music history. Inspiration can come from anywhere.

I played Jazz guitar in junior high, it was a blast.  There is just something special to playing in the jazz band.  I always just played 4-5 string moveable chord structures on the bottom strings.  It was basically jazz power chords.  One of my favorite jazz songs is Birdland, and the cover of it performed by The String Cheese Incident on their Carnival '99 cd is tons of fun. 

Thelonious Monk, Glenn Miller and Duke Ellington are my favorites as well, but I really don't know where to search/discover Jazz like I can indie rock (pitchfork, the mediafire thread etc.) so if you have any recommendations for places to look for new sweet stuff please tell!

This is a great jazz blog with a mixture of mainstream stuff coupled with some more obscure cuts-I am recommending it here because it uses mediafire, and the cat gives ample and correct descriptions of the titles he shares.  He also goes through and updates dead links often so its worth spending some time in the archive.  http://rockcitygentlemen.blogspot.com/  Its a great resource for people who just want to start checking different flavors out -I will also upload some jazz in the mediafire as time permits. Also for the guitar centric at last check this guy had some Kenny Burrell, and Grant Green lp's up both of which are guitar centric romps sure to please. Edited to add that he has switched jis links to zshare but that dl site still lets you grab quite a few in a row

I recently downloaded some Bireli Lagrene, very great guitarist. At first i heard of him because of Gypsy Jazz, but I stumbled across some live sessions where he's playing to Funk and Blues and kind of New Jazz, great guitarist I would recommend him for sure.
ALSO everyone must find as much Avishai Cohen as they can. He's a double Bassist and he's one of the best musicians out there in my opinion. Definitely check him out! (His rendition of Caravan is in 9/4 timing... sexy)

not really, infact its very good to memories any scale especially for improvising via playing jazz


of course i find it more helpful when playin jazz to to understand that jazz bends the rules in music theory (tastfully) with thousands of key changes that occur usually randomly and chord structures that you cant find in most other genres

i like to improvise to jazz records, always great practice if you want to develop a good taste for time signatures key changes and obscure (tastfully) chord structures

I'm surprised Sun Ra hasn't been mentioned yet. one of my all time favourite jazz artists, and Jazz in Silhouette is my favourite jazz record of all time.

Soulive (one of THE best live acts I've seen in a long time. They've gone quite downhill with their new record, though. They introduced a singer and it just doesn't feel right.)
The Bad Plus (this band blew me away. I hadn't heard of them until I saw them live, and I kicked myself for it. a quaint little three piece. grand piano, stand up bass, insane drummer.)

Actually, it technically is. Most progressions are either in major or minor rather than a modal scale to make sure they resolve properly, but technically you could have a Lydian progression, as long as it's very simple.

But, yeah, modes are, for all intents and purposes, used as separate scales.

Modes are just the process of applying a different root/tonic to an existing scale (usually the diatonic). They're not scales on their own, they are just a different starting point of a scale.

My band has a really heavy jazz influence, although it's not in every song.  We have some pretty straight ahead jazz, and we normally play free jazz segues between songs.   http://www.myspace.com

Just picked up some Mingus over the weekend, and my third copy of Kind of Blue.  I tend to break or scratch that one pretty frequently.  Anybody dig fusion bands like Weather Report or Mahavishnu?  Or even Bela Fleck for that matter.

Modes are just the process of applying a different root/tonic to an existing scale (usually the diatonic). They're not scales on their own, they are just a different starting point of a scale.

That's the process of how you get them. But you play them as separate scales.

For instance, you don't start and resolve on D while in the key of C and think you're playing Dorian. You have a tonal center of C with a different scale formula.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 is very different from 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7. You actually play different notes while in the same key, ergo they are different scales no matter the method for working out what they are. It's like saying Phrygian Dominant isn't a scale because it's part of the Harmonic Minor family.
