Talvisota - Winter War
« on: 06 Apr 2008, 06:42 »

Talvisota is definitely one of the best war movies I have seen. A bit old since it was made at 1989 but still far better than Saving Private Ryan hollywood spectacle. Short plot summary by IMDB: "Russia attacked Finland in late November 1939. This film tells the story of a Finnish platoon of reservists from the municipality of Kauhava in the province of Pohjanmaa/Osttrobottnia who leave their homes and go to war. The film focuses on the farmer brothers Martti and Paavo Hakala."

You can watch the entire movie with english subtitles at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyhgkkHW5o8&

If you decide to watch it, tell us what you thought about the movie.

Watched the first three segements - no bad, a little slow in developing, but so far so good.

None of the usual stereotypes, but that's not a bad thing.

Although, as war movies go, I recommend "Cross of Iron", "the Longest Day", and "Dieppe"

I have seen the first two, which by the way were very good. Guess I should check out Dieppe next.
Also good war movies: Stalingrad, Hamburger Hill, Platoon, The 9th Company, All Quiet on the Western Front (1979)

Haven't seen 9th Company, but Hamburger Hill was a meh movie.

Other good ones are Enemy at the Gate, andThe Immortal Battalion (a WWII British movie with both David Niven and peter Ustinov)...

And Band of Brothers is a good series.

I think that Hamburger Hill was more like a basic action movie but still fun to watch. Full Metal Jacket is also a decent movie. Not particulary a war movie: "Tigerland" A movie about training for war. I think it was pretty accurate with what I experienced when I was in the army (Finnish Defence Forces), with the exception of live ammunition being shot at me and me not dicking around like star in this movie. Also I enjoyed the movie.

Talvisota was OK, we wached it in school. But i still think the Unknown Soldier is way better The original movie version from 1955 of course. It tells about the Continuation War between Finland and soviet union 1941-1944

Gus, can we stop being dicks about "necroposting"? What, are we never supposed to speak of things ever again once they've gone unmentioned for a few months?  I really don't understand this thing where people get all up in a tizz about it. So a guy revived an old thread. So the hell what? Who cares?

I think the main problem is not that the thread was revived, but rather it was revived with nothing of value added.

I think the main problem is not that the thread was revived, but rather it was revived with nothing of value added.

What do you mean? It was revived with a suggestion of an alternative film with a similar theme that people who like the film under discussion might also wish to check out. Sounds like something of value to me.
