 I'm looking for some new music. The reason I'm asking on the QC boards is that I'm looking for stuff that I can only describe as "indie."

So here is what I like. I have only just started to listen to the bands with lines through them:

Electric President is my favourite (Or Radical Face, his solo band)
and Iron and Wine's an awesome Indie folk artist.
Broken Social Scene's one of the greatest in Indie
K.C Accidental is a good instrumental band.
Pretty sure R.E.M and Gorillaz sold out.

Postal Service is good.  Especially if you already like Death Cab for Cutie. But you're already listening to them so it's not really a recommendation.

T.V. On the Radio are awesome.
Ted Leo is also full of awesome.
Also, Knapsack and Blood Red Shoes might be worth looking into.

Yeah, on the post-rock side of things, you couldn't go wrong with some Mogwai (Young Team), Slint (Spiderland) and Rodan (Rusty). Mogwai are definitely towards more of the drawn-out instrumental side of post-rock while Rodan are of its screamy post-hardcore set (also get into the albums by June of 44 and The Shipping News as well), and Slint falls somewhere in between.

The Fall is very yes. Perverted by Language and This Nation's Saving Grace will do you good.

Most likely I'm making this recommendation because I'm on a huge kick of their music and I make the recommendation every time someone makes a "moar indiez please" thread, but The Dismemberment Plan's Emergency and I is probably as perfect an archetypal indie rock album can get.

Lately I've absolutely loved The Stage Names. The lyrics and music are more refined and even playful sometimes. The wordplay in Plus Ones is one of my favourite song lyrics of all time, but there is something so much more raw and personal about Black SHeep Boy that makes me prefer it

Silver Mt Zion is good. Born Into Trouble as the Sparks Fly Upward is a bit melancholy, but excellent.

Also, The Sparks are great. Someone else can probably recommend a better starting point for them than I can, as I only have Hello Young Lovers

See, it all comes down to personal experience. Is there a line more affecting to me than  "Well, loving is as loving does, and I’d say we should know, because we both have loved, have lost, and are alone."? No, I don't think there is.

If you dig the Lawrence Arms check out Slapstick, Tuesday, the Broadways Colossal, Alkaline Trio and Sundowner.  All of those bands are related and originally stem from Slapstick.  Colossal is my favorite out of the slapstick spin off bands.  They kind of broke up though.  It was sad.

Also, Russian Circles are pretty mind blowing, especially live. They are good solid instrumental post rock kinda metal mathy stuff.  Minus the Bear has awful lyrics but amazing guitar work and music, plus they are dancey and catchy. 

For your indie pop kinda tastes I would check out Via Audio.  They are sweeeeeeeet.  Maritime is fantabulous, they are from milwaukee and are made up of some dudes from the Promise Ring, Decibully and The Benjamins.  On that note also check out the Promise Ring and Decibully.  Related to them is Headlights.  I would check them out as well.

My god, is it just me or does the midwest have an incredibly incestuous indie and punk scene.

Fixed your post, Eric left that band in '06. I barely remembered that dude from Promise Ring was a lefty, and I watched one of their videos, hoping I was going to get to see a band with two lefties in it.

Nope, unfortunately. I've never really heard Maritime or The Promise Ring, so I wouldn't really know.
