Guitar
« on: 27 Apr 2008, 09:24 »

I just took up guitar lessons, and next time I go, the teacher wants me to bring not only a book of chords and a guitar, but also a cd of music I want to learn. Can anyone who plays guitar recommend some songs for me? I'm learning on acoustic, and for some reason, there seems to be a shortage of fully acoustic songs.

I'm probably wrong, but I just can't seem to find many.

Blackbird is always a good one...as is half of Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane over the Sea.  Umm alotta 90's stuff.  Just look around, theres a good amount of stuff that was written/performed/made famous by electric guitars that translates cool-ly to acoustic.

"Wish you Were Here" by Pink Floyd is the first song I learned on acoustic.  Great song, and pretty easy to learn too.

Dude, Fun House. < /jackass>

The Foo Fighters have some decent acoustic/acoustic-versioned songs that are pretty easy to learn.  'Big Me' was the first thing I ever learned to play.

I was also wondering whether he meant songs with only one guitar, or if multiple guitars are ok.

Yeah.  That whole album is pretty easy to play.  G, D, C, Em, Bm, B, F, and some A# thing.  That's most of the album right there.

The first song I ever learned on acoustic was I Summon You by Spoon, because it has a fun strum. The second was Bankrupt On Selling by Modest Mouse. I think I Summon You has some other instrument in it but it sounds fine without it.

EDIT: I just checked out Wish You Were here because I saw it mentioned here and I highly reccomend learning that.

Down The Line- Jose Gonzalez

The song is extremely easy to learn, good acoustic song for a beginner.

a ton of (most?) is electric, so don't just grab anything by them. If You Are Feeling Sinister is probably your best bet here

Yeah, IYFS and Tigermilk will probably work best here. There's acoustic songs scattered in their other albums, but the first two B&S albums are mostly simple songs that can either be played acoustically or adapted to play acoustically.

Strum away!

"Piazza, New York Catcher" and "Expectations" are a couple pretty easy songs.

Now that I think about it.  The entire soundtrack to Juno might be a good starting place.  I mean, "Anyone Else But You" is comprised of G and a modified C chord.

santana's " turn your lights on" is a sweet acoustic song for a beginner. it sounds pro, and is relatively simple.

I always teach kids Radiohead songs, Creep is good for learning and practicing bar chords, Karma Police is good for standard kinda chords and Street Spirit is good for picking.  Some Nirvana stuff is really good for leaning guitar on an acoustic.  Try About a Girl and Pennyroyal Tea.  After you have a good grasp on chords and such I would move on to stuff by Elliot Smith and the Beatles.
