No no no no no, that's not it.

They've almost certainly lost their trademark sound, but I doubt it's directly Marr's fault. He might have something to do with it, but he's not the whole reason at all.

Blame Sony BMG. Marr is a good guitarist but quite frankly Modest Mouse doesn't need another one. It's the curse of living in the Arcade Fire age that bigger supposedly means better.

Yeah, for real.  Good News for People Who Love Bad News is a pretty awesome record, but it just doesn't possess that same vibe as old Modest Mouse records do.  Isaac Brock sobering up might have something to do with it, as well as the addition of Johnny Marr.

Isaac Brock has been sober since right after TMAA. He wasn't on drugs for Sharpen Your Teeth, GNFPWLBN or WWDBTSES, but he did get pretty shitfaced in the early hours of the morning for writing a lot of the material.
Debate this if you want, but the sound changed because of major label control and influence. TMAA had some strange production choices, probably on the label's part, and they asked the band to write a pop song for the album.
The decision to add rhythm guitar on GNFPWLBN was a major label one. The label asked for some obvious singles on that album. The label chose to super produce it. That last album was the next logical step. That said, Johnny Marr joined the band because Isaac Brock really loves the Smiths and Marr hasn't done anything worthwhile since then. He doesn't want to admit it, but this 'hip' and 'new' band was a huge opportunity for Johnny Marr.

Isaac Brock can still write an interesting song. Unfortunately, for the band Modest Mouse, music is a business. It's their career. The way I see it, once your music becomes 'work', it's gonna show in your records, and I can't think of a better example of this than Modest Mouse right now.

I don't see how it's really Marr's fault. I'm definitely in the "blame the label" camp. They wanted hit singles and push MM to write them. It worked. I'm still amazed that a band that wrote "The Lonesome Crowded West" (their best album, and probably among my 50 favorite albums overall) could go on to write "Float On" and something as shockingly boring as "Dashboard."

Excluding a couple of songs, agreed.

Except for the part about TM&A being their best album, that title belongs to The Lonesome Crowded West. TM&A is my second favorite.

BNooS is indeed great. It's easily one of the better compilation albums I've heard. I am unwavering in my opinion that TLCW is easily MM's best overall. The vinyl version is ordered a bit differently and even has 'Baby Blue Sedan,' an absolutely heartbreaking song and one of the best moments of BNooS on it. MM has done so excellent stuff but nothing touches this release.

i'm still surprised that Modest Mouse are as huge of a band as they are now. i remember when i was a kid and Modest Mouse was sort of a local joke. like, i knew a guy who had seen Modest Mouse around 15 times (this was about three or so years before Moon & Antarctica came out) and we always gave him a hard time about it:

"haha Leon's seen Modest Mouse at least ten times...what an idiot!"

of course, secretly we all liked Modest Mouse but we were young and it wasn't cool to admit it so we acted like jerks instead.

"Good News..." doesn't deserve to be vilified, I'll grant you that. It has some quality moments and a handful of genuinely very good songs. That being said, it still does not compare at all with TMaA or TLCW. Where MM stands now was a process which really began in earnest with several moments of "Good News...". The album isn't terrible but its good moments aren't enough. I don't think any one song on "Good News...", for example, is better than any one song on TLCW.

I haven't heard Modest Mouse in a very wrong time, but I highly doubt a guitarist as good as Marr could ever be detrimental to their sound. More like they can't live up to Marr's skillz.

I'll keep on saying this until it hits home, but...
Getting off drugs has NOTHING to do with Modest Mouse writing crap music. NOTHING. A lot of Brock's best songs were written sober. The implication that it does is not only an insult to Modest Mouse, but an insult to musicians that are sober in general.

I was typing a rebuttal, when I started trying to think of sober musicians that are great vs crap musicians that are on drugs. I could not think of a single example of bands that made better music when sober. Infact, I could only think of BORING musicians that were sober. The interesting ones where the ones on hardcore drugs.

Case in point:

These guys are boring. They look like English teachers, they sound like English teachers. All their lyrics sound like lectures on how to be a good person. Fuck that, they're like my damn parents. I don't wanna know.

Now THIS is what I wanna hear. These guys sing about real things that are close my my heart. All about drinks, drugs, love and fuckin' stuff. I don't know shit about recycling or whatever it is Fugazi are singing about, but I do know REAL feeling in music when I hear it. And when I hear Pete or Amy sing, I know it's fucking REAL.

I don't think anyone specific in the band is to be blamed per se, they're all fantastic musicians (except maybe for the extra fucking drummer who they don't fucking need; Jeremiah is one of the best drummers alive, I'm sure he can handle himself). There's definitely something more subtle going on underneath. I'm not even gonna speculate just because so many other theories have already been posted, but I'm just saying that it probably is no specific person's fault.
