The year in Trip-Hop
« on: 14 May 2008, 11:34 »

Releases thus far:

Portishead's Third - April 28th
Morcheeba's Dive Deep - February 4th
Supreme Beings of Leisure's 11i - February 12th

Upcoming releases:

Tricky's Knowle West Boy - July 21st
Massive Attack's "Weather Underground" - Winter

I guess it's just cause I have a radio show that concentrates on trip hop acts that I'm excited about this year, but it's been pretty fucking awesome in terms of the bands and quality of music that's come out.

Is Third even trip-hop any more?  It's almost like psychedelic noir.  That being said, it’s a great album.

Likewise, is Tricky's new album gonna trip-hop?  The last full album of his Ive heard that I'd call trip-hop was Angels with Dirty Faces. Juxtapose was basically straight hip-hop, and what tracks I’d heard from the next two albums didn't seem really trip-hop-ish to me either.

Third is the best album out this decade.

I am not kidding.

Yeah, the new Portishead and what I've heard of the new Tricky aren't trip-hop at all.

It's not a genre anymore.  It never really was much of one in the first place.

Drama - Bitter:Sweet

It's going to be fucking amazing. It's coming out in June and I'm panting already.

It's so very, very, sad that the OP has a Trip-Hop show and didn't meantion B:S.

Just because this thread is likely to have people who know what the fuck trip-hop is...

I met the bass player for this group at a folk fest the other weekend. She said her main project is this band- I like it pretty well but I know jack about this genre. I'd been interested in hearing another opinion.

I never really understood the trip-hop label. Most trip-hop I've heard seems to have almost nothing to do with hip-hop and everything to do with the output of the 4AD label in the 80's. What exactly differentiates, say, Portishead and Cocteau Twins?

Jesus christ, people actually REPLIED to this thread... I totally abandoned it as a lost cause.

Anyway, the radio show is this Sunday morning/Saturday night 3am - 6pm pacific time, it's streamable on the website: www.kzsc.org.

And yes, Drama by Bitter:Sweet is fucking good. We just got it in the station a week ago and I've played some of it on my show. The new Trifonic disc, Emergence, is also amazing. It's self-released and you can download it for free here: www.trifonic.com

The reason I'm peddling Trifonic is because I interviewed the Trifon brothers this week about their disc and I'll be airing the interview on my show.

Honestly my show isn't strictly trip-hop; I mix in a lot of non-trip hop downtempo ambient music, some IDM (all my requests are for Aphex Twin... and I love Amon Tobin and Burial), and whatever low-key electronic music suits my mood (like I Am Robot And Proud).

Also, yeah, the new Portishead is a psychedelic rock record, no doubt about it, but they're still a trip-hop band in most people's eyes, and I played the entire record on my show the week after it was released on CD (yeah, I know what you're thinking; "why not play the leak?", well... I'm a man of principles... and that record means a lot to me, plus I thought that the leak had some strange endings and thought that possible the CD version would be less abrupt. I was wrong, but whatever).

I really hope the new Tricky is a return-to-roots record.

Also Crudo might have some downtempo stuff, possibly, since it is Dan the Automator and Mike Patton working together...

Jesus Christ people, it's alright to like Mastodon, but to try and claim that Leviathan was the greatest album of the fucking decade is so utterly fucking ludicrous you deserve to be called on it, repeatedly.

Ludicrous.

Wait so you were really saying that you thought Leviathan was better than Third?

I thought you were just going for a completely out of place meme.

Mastodon is good music, but you fuckers are ruining it. Go take the obnoxious shenanigans elsewhere.

From what I've heard of it, the new Tricky isn't going to be a return to roots, but it does sound pretty good.  Very aggressive.  I really dig "Council Estate".
