Consider yourself lucky that you avoided them for so long. They're a pretty good summary of everything that's wrong with indie rock.

I still have not listened to more than one song by Of Montreal. I can't say I'm motivated by that one song to change this either.

I am listening to Hissing Fauna... right now and enjoying it immensely, although I can also see what would turn some people off about it.

It took me two tries before I liked Hissing Fauna, but I pretty much agree with Jeph.

They're the sort of band that I like immensely but I won't hold it against someone if they don't.

I just got into them too. I absolutely adore The Gay Parade, I haven't heard much else. Unfortunately, I kinda overplayed it the first week I had it (more than twice some days...), So I haven't listened to it in a while.

Bullshit generic indie rawk? They are basically like two entirely different bands with two entirely different sounds. The only thing that has stayed the same from Cherry Peel to Hissing Fauna is Kevin Barnes' voice, and even that is stretching it.

My favorite song is Let's do Everything for the First Time Forever. It is stupidly twee and ridiculously sweet.

Sod genres. I like them because they write music that engages my brain* (that's why I also like, say, NMH).  They're a bit samey when taken in too large a quantity at once, though.  My preferred album is Aldhils Arboretum, but Satanic Panic in the Attic shows some development; I've not heard later than that yet.

Paul

* My musical brain, that is. Remember I'm a classical musician looking around here to broaden his mind, so I appreciate the way music is constructed as well as how it sounds.

They used to be on Kindercore but now they are on Polivinyl.

I don't think it is even possible to say they are everything wrong, if only because the incredible difference between their stuff.

Hissing Fauna was almost my favourite album from last year. Everything about it seemed  right, even now. It is an album I can relate to in many ways, most of them depressing.

edit: to the dude above. Listen to The Gay Parade and then to Hissing Fauna and you'll see development.

Of Montreal was my first indie rock experience. From there I went to E6 and then branched out further.

I find it strange and foreign that a man who I thought of as an authority on indie is only now experiencing them.

I didn't belive that a band called Of Montreal would actually have the audacity to call themselves that and not actually be from Montreal, but I searched wikipedia to find out for sure. They are actually from Athens, Georgia. Fucking Georgia. According to wikipedia, Kevin named the band after a failed romance with a girl from Montreal.

I think they sound like The Beatles in their early years. Which is good but no wonderful.
But they start doing drugs and come out with something like "I am the Walrus" well, then I have to like them.

Hey guys, did you know that I'm From Barcelona is not from Barcelona? That the B-52s weren't actually trained as Bomber pilots in WWII?

The driving melancholy on that track is just fantastic.  Unfortunately, I completely overplayed Hissing Fauna... the first week or two after I got it, and haven't listened to it much since

i think The Past Is a Grotesque Animal is my least favorite track on that cd. which isn't saying much because i fucking love the entire thing but it's not really something i can actively listen to because it's so repetive and goes on for, what 11 minutes or something?

it's absolutely fine if i'm driving because i can sing and along and not be even be aware that's it's one long track but i tried to show a friend a certain part ("i'm ronking out/i'm gonking out" [?] or whatever he says) and it made me realize how absurdly boring and slightly annoying that song is.

I think they sound like The Beatles in their early years.

Eh?

Paul

he's probably referring to The Gay Parade which does sound alot like the Beatles when they were on lots of drugs. it's alot different from their newer stuff which is more conventional poppy stuff. personally, i like The Gay Parade more than Hissing Fauna but that might just be because i heard it first so it has sentimental value...plus i know all the words and i like to sing along.

I just like how proggy the track is, how it builds on minor variations over time. And the driving melody is, indeed, fantastic. When the background vocals ("ohhhh-ohhhh-ohhhh, ohhhh-ohhhh-ohhhh") come in I feel tingly inside.

yes, it's a great song. it's actually a really great song. i'm actually listening to it right now and i think my real problem with it is that i can't listen to it with other people (none of my friends like the same music as me) but i can listen to it by myself fine; actively or not.
my first post was a little poorly worded.

also, i don't think it's my least favorite track like i said...it's not my favorite and i can't explicitly name a track that i like less than it but i'm sure there is one because i can't even think of how the last three tracks go so maybe i don't like those ones very much? i don't know.

I think Of Montreal's name is the least offensive thing about them.  I'm pretty sure nobody ever thought they were actually from Montreal.  Just like nobody thinks Architecture In Helsinki are from Helsinki, or that I Am the World Trade Center are a post-9/11 New York band.
