I just got back from Cat Power. A very large part of her set seemed to be composed of new songs, some of which sounded really good, but it would've been nice to hear some more familiar stuff, too. Though the older songs she did play was usually changed drastically: "The Greatest", for instance, was slowed down so much that it was almost unrecognisable. Nonetheless, there were a few highlights which I'll list in no particular order:
1) Jim White is currently sporting a mad scientist hair-do. Imagine a Russian icon, if the halo around the head was dark brown and made of hair. I'm not gonna lie, it's pretty awesome.
2) It was Chan Marshall's birthday, and after a few people shouted out happy birthday to her after a while into the set the crowd launched into a spontaneous chorus of "Happy Birthday". It was a pretty cute moment, and it was only made better by how obvious it was that no-one really knew how to pronounce the name "Chan", certainly not in an Australian accent, and the whole song dissolved into mumbles.
3) For the very last song Chan and the band played "Metal Heart", which was perhaps not surprising but was welcome all the same. I absolutely adore that song and I can truly say that very few performances have made me as happy as hearing that song being played with Jim White (who drummed on Moon Pix) behind the drumkit.
4) I met a really cute and really smart girl who when I suggested we keep in touch asked me my surname and promised to find me on Facebook!
EDIT: Oh, and 5) Chan Marshall, after playing a new song: "That song's not a virgin any more, but it wasn't fucked right."
