Trans-lingual song game, NOW WITH ADDED RULES!
« on: 17 Jun 2008, 15:36 »

A-Remove contractions. Every time I've run a contraction through a translator, it's absolutely fucked it. Not in an endearing or funny way, more in the "completely undecipherable word fragments way."

B-Break it up a little in some slightly recognizable verse manner. I am not reading these fucking wall of text monstrosities, nor do I expect others to.

C-Throw in a little punctuation before translating. Notice how mine, while amusingly goofy, is at least somewhat recognizable? Translators don't recognize context, especially without punctuation. Adding a period or a comma here or there breaks it up so the translator can understand the point of the lyric while still butchering individual words to an amusing degree.

Let's not just do complete text dumps, huh? That's pretty lazy and boring and it makes for a pretty shit thread if no one puts any effort in.

Yes, I did. For the record, it's actually Okkervil River's (Shannon Wilsey on the) Starry Stairs.

Then what was the point of the thread?  Do you expect other people to translate song lyrics into other languages and then back again so that no-one can understand them?  Doesn't seem like a very interactive topic.

This thread might be kind of amusing if (a) you just translated it into one language then back, or (b) you told us which three languages you'd translated it into, so we could try to reverse it.

Of course, secretly I'm just hankering for someone to revive the old "identify the album cover from the M.S. Paint recreation" thread.

In an attempt to see if any good could be made from this idea, I tried various lyrics in babelfish. The only good results was this, after being translated back and forth from Dutch.

Quote
Well it years happened suffered, then you on Road van Stanhope lived. We listened to your sister, then they to house school ended up, cos. she two years parent was, and she had boys in its space. We listened and heard her. In order. Well was that in order for a spell, but quick want I more. I want hearing see evenal, and this way hid I within its cloakroom. And she came around makes TO HOUSE four, and she had been called with one or other kids David, of the garage the way. I listened outside I heard her. In order. Oh which I have wanted you to take house. I want give children you. YOU my little girl are able be, yes.

That, if you could not tell, was Babies - Pulp.

I wonder if the Dutch language has some reason as to why random words became completely capitalized.

You should do more well-known songs.

The things that are inside my brain.
All of them that the lady has said
They are galloping through my brain
They are galloping through my brain
They are galloping through my brain

Here is a hint, it is a song by TATU.

I think the first two lines gave me a the initial hint, then the lines that start with "YOU". I think the main lines were "Start another large babble" and then "ahhh when you' ve fallen in love" sealed it. Basically now I'm listening to Vespertine because I want to know where 'slagslag' came from.

It think this one should be fairly simple:

Quote

I agree with Patrick on the "more well known songs" idea. Not all of us are indie hipster music elitists like most of the music forums and aren't apt to get "such and such obscure song by such and such obscure finnish band." I think we should stick with maintstreamish singles or move this to the music forum where it's less likely to fall to the bottom of the page as a result of 70% of the readership not getting or enjoying it.

I've got one. It's overall very simple to anyone who's heard pretty much any music in the last three decades. I'm shrinking a couple lines to avoid making it completely and utterly simplistic, but it should still be easy enough for most:

Quote
The father crossing the ocean, leave the memory which it flew exactly.
Snapshot of album of family.
You went away in other things something because of me the father?
The father, what because of me it made desertion?
That was exactly the brick of the wall as a whole.
That was all fair bricks of the wall as a whole.

We do not need education. We do not need idea control.
There is no sarcasm where the classroom is dark.
The teacher shoots the child to those.
Just a little! Teacher! Do to shoot the child to those!
That is exactly another brick of the wall as a whole.
It is exactly another brick of the wall as a whole.

I do not need the arm around me
And I do not need that the medicine calms down me.
I me who looked at writing the wall of that it needs at all with anything do not have to think.
Calling obtaining! Me of that it needs at all with anything you do not have to think.
That was all fair bricks of the wall as a whole.
It was exactly the brick of all walls as a whole.

Technically, it's three songs, but that also kind of gives it away.

This one's English>Japanese>English.

This is swiftly becoming an even less organized version of the film quotes thread. Someone wanna lay down some strict ground rules? This is turning into a clusterfuck.

Notably, I'd recommend having rules to:

I was going to bitch about mixing me up with someone who at least could be easily confused with me, but then I remember Darryl, whom I often mix up with Dan myself, wishes he were me. I guess that flies, then.

Can someone answer my excessively simple lyric so we can get on with this thread?

And FYI, it was actually all three parts, I just minimixed most of Part 2, as it's too much a dead giveaway.

In retrospect, upon trying to translate Nirvana to Japanese and back, I think I kind of like the result better than the original version. If Babel Fish were a readily available tool back when he was around, I'd be convinced that it was how he actually got his lyrics:

Quote
Upload your guns and your friends have.
And pretend to lose it's fun.
She is more than boring and self-assured.
Oh no, I know that obscenities.

Hello, hello, hello, how low?

The lights out to be less dangerous.
We are here now, please Oh joy.
I feel stupid and contagious.
We are here now, please Oh joy.
A mulatto.
The albino.
Mosquitoes.
My sex drive.
Yay!
Hey!
Hey!

I was weak I do best.
And I feel blessed for this gift.
Our group is almost always.
The last and always.

Why do I forget my taste.
Oh yeah, I guess you know that smile.
Why not try a lot of hard, it is difficult to find.
But I guess, what a life, nevermind.

Denied!

And no, no one's expected to even try this one, it's so stupid. Jens, give us a new song!

I wanted Russian, but Babel fish wasn't cool enough to let me.

Kevin, I think that indecipherable clusterfuck of a text wall ignored pretty much everything I advised in order to simplify this thread. I think the point is to have fun, not give people a fucking aneurysm.

Okay, I'm going to try to bring this back on account no one seems to know Gemm's attempt. Here's a new one to try. Once again, easy enough:

Quote
I will go with you this evening at home?
This Red and down beside the stove.
I am going to enjoy all this?
Lower fat girls
Stop flights around the world.

I was a little slim young man,
I do not distinguish between good and evil,
But I knew before I left kindergarten life.
Left alone, there are a large number of fat I am,
She will not listen to me, and grandmother,
A large pile of women, got a bad boy.
Hey!

I sing with my band
All lands lying between the wires.
Loose woman with blue eyes, and I saw all my way,
However, the beauty and style,
After a period of time, the kind of smooth.
Women with this means that every time.

Come.
Oh, I'm my house?
Uh, after the red light.
Oh, give it body.
Lower fat girls around the world swings.

Hey, please listen.
Now, pledges,
The stiffness and Massachusetts' bones.
Beauty queen was not in this situation (tell you).
Uh, but is still my joy,
I still get the greatest treasure
Women go to a large group of people do not exaggerate.

This is now.
Oh, I'm my house?
Uh, after the red light.
Oh, give it body.
Lower fat girls around the world swings.

Get a bike ride.
Uh, yes, yes. Fat - the lowest this girl.
Fat - the lowest girl.
Yes yes yes.
Now, riding to the next.
Fat - the lowest girl: Yes.

They of goes indefinitely my friend.
To Some person who DO emergency start sing this
qu' it; ton of fuel element
possible fuel element;
were he and they' ;
l always remains singing for net because.

This should be relatively easy.

Oh jeez, The Song that Never Ends... Thanks a lot for digging up that annoying memory. :P

Quote
Mamma received a framework of the compression, which it carries on its cable
and if the dad to the house it comes no remainder never receives
because it plays all during the night
and the whole music recess,
which received the Mamma a dad of the framework of the compression, does not sleep never the Jaillissent night

the kids to eat and the dog cannot sleep there is no escaping the music in the road of nothing whole
because it plays all during the night
and the whole music recess
the Mamma a dad of the framework of the compression received, sleeps the night

it internal never goes and outside and internal and outside and internal and outside

it plays everything during of the Night
and the whole one of the music recess, which received the Mamma a dad of the framework of the compression, never the night

it sleeps goes, tightens me, progress and me greenhouse progress and neckt me,

while you are I therefore in the love with you
the Mamma a dad of the framework of the compression sleep never the night received

it internal goes and outside and internal and outside and internal and outside and internal and outside

because it plays all during the night and the
Mamma a dad of the framework of the compression received the whole music recess, never the night sleeps

I used a utility that automates the translation, but left a big blob of text. It should be recognizable, though.

I think I might have slightly cheated by googling the bits of the lyrics I could best guess at, but it's Mamma's Got a Squeeze Box by the Who.

Quote
It covered the paradise and organization a carpark
with a pink hotel, a shop and an oscillating extreme spot
always does not appear d' to go
him that you weet went what you ace with
them covered the paradise and puts a carpark on

them took all trees the met in a museum d' tree
and they charged people a dollar and half them to only try
to appear d' to always go not
that you weet what you ace not with went
them covered the paradise and now puts a carpark on

l' farmer d' farmer of Hey moved that d.d.t
gives me spot on my apples
but to leave want them me them birds and the bees!

He always does not appear d' to go
that you weet went what you ace not with
them covered the paradise and puts a late carpark on

I particularly like how the chorus is translated in three different ways.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."

Big Yellow Taxi!

I am using bicostp's utility thing to give you this:

Quote
Astonished and confused during much applicable stay a woman not
exijiu, since then of which not never negotiated for you in a good
number of the speech of the people, little, of whom she knew that the
internal part to him of estêve of the woman created for the low point,
ouais

Nobody will ever get this.
