Self Portrait Thread
« on: 02 Jul 2008, 17:30 »

Dovey mentioned this idea in the photothread and I thought it sounded like a good one!  I guess it probably belongs in the drawing thread, but no one goes in there.  And I want everyone to do it!  It could be fun!
It's pretty self explanatory!  Draw yourself!  As fun or silly or awesome as you want!  I know we have a bunch of good artists on this board, but I want to see everyone's version of themselves.

I will start us off I guess!  I drew this just for this thread!

Here it is in its silly before blending stage!

I will be all up in this thread once I draw myself today. I will have two (count 'em, two!) self portraits, complete with labels noting stuff.

I'm gonna try to do one of these as often as possible, and forsake photowhoring for draw-whoring.

I'm pretty sure that when Jimmy arrives in Boston next year, there will be an entourage wearing Jimmy masks waiting to greet him outside of Logan Airport (Outside, because I figure security won't take kindly to a series of JimmytheSquid masks).

john allison and paul taylor (of wapsi square) are my biggest influences at the moment so yeah no offense taken whatsoever.

i usually do one of these every year. the one i posted from a couple years ago when i had longer hair + face piercings is basically 100% john allison rip off.

I am somewhat disenchanted with art of late.  Doing portraits like my one at the start of this thread gives me liittle or no joy.  I just do it for something to do really.  I'm trying to find a style I can enjoy drawing in, which is alarmingly hard.

This is what I look like when I spend too much time reading Jennifer Feinberg's Chi (I love her art alot).  Also when I just sit and draw shapes.  Loxley noticed that apparently there was a bird behind me.  So I gave in to his demands and made it ART.  Or something!  Its a bit bizzarre and crap, but its a self portrait!

It's an animation technique, but I was referring more to the style that is used in the Linklater films Waking Life and A Scanner, Darkly.

I'm suspecting you may have some other meaning in mind when you say "vector imaging," but note that Illustrator is based on vector graphics. So yes, they probably did use vectors for those drawings; vector graphics are routinely used for doing illustrations of people. Just do a gis for 'vector portrait'

It was done with vector images. I think "Waking Life" was hand-painted, but in any case it's all rotoscoping! :D

[EDIT - I was confused and tired and my post didn't actually make sense! Sorry guys! ]

The DVD I have depicts dozens of artists painstakingly hand drawing over every single frame for both movies using tablets in a program with a strikingly similar interface to photoshop.

Also, you'd know if you saw Illustrator, because it uses the pen tool. It's easily recognisable, pretty different to the type of painting you get in Photoshop. You probably saw Painter! Did it look something like this?
