Hellboy 2: The Golden Army

KvP:
So it's coming out in a week. And it is going to be both glorious and magical.

It's sort of peculiar that this film was even made at all. The production budget exceeds the total domestic gross of the first film (or so I'm told) and it's got exactly one week to live before Heath Ledger's Last Role crushes it into so much dust. Chalk it up to Pan's Labyrinth being as well-received as it was, I suppose.

Anyway, I liked the first film well enough, but there was something missing from it. It was a fun, lighthearted action movie that didn't have a particularly strong villain (not unlike Iron Man, now that I think about it) but it looks like this time the full power of Guillermo Del Toro's fertile imagination is being brought to bear, and I couldn't be more excited. The only comparable filmmakers in terms of visual luxury working today are probably Tarsem and Michel Gondry. Plus, Ron Perlman in a leading role is something I wholeheartedly support.

There are a number of short clips from the film you can watch here.

There are some amusing short ads they've released as well with Hellboy appearing in amusing juxtaposition with assorted television personalities.

Hellboy and Chuck
Hellboy Inside the Actor's Studio
Hellboy and Ghost Hunters

Who else is going to see it? All of you?

ThePQ4:
I'll go see it of course... Do I think that it was a necessary movie to make? No, i really don't. Do I think it looks kinda of kick-ass? Yeah, I do.
So, I'll throw down my $6 to go see it one afternoon, or hell, if it's at the drive-in with something that is equally as interesting sounding, I might toss out the extra 1.50 and see the double-feature (goddamn, I love the Drive-In...)

Tom:
Del Toro and Mignolia working together, put me down as a "fuck yeah".

Jimmy the Squid:
I really liked the first one and I totally understand what you said about not having a strong villain. I found the first one to be really anticlimactic, it just kind of fell flat and having that giant tentacle thing kind of made the villain very inhuman and unrelatable which in this film was not great.

That said, the sequel looks incredible and like it's actually had the thought behind it that the first one lacked. So hurrah! I didn't realise it was coming out so soon though. I guess I'm going to be going to the cinema a lot in the next few weeks.

Cartilage Head:
Man I cannot wait to see it it is going to be so rad. It will CRUSH BALLS.
