Hellboy 2: The Golden Army
« on: 04 Jul 2008, 23:51 »

So it's coming out in a week. And it is going to be both glorious and magical.

It's sort of peculiar that this film was even made at all. The production budget exceeds the total domestic gross of the first film (or so I'm told) and it's got exactly one week to live before Heath Ledger's Last Role crushes it into so much dust. Chalk it up to Pan's Labyrinth being as well-received as it was, I suppose.

Anyway, I liked the first film well enough, but there was something missing from it. It was a fun, lighthearted action movie that didn't have a particularly strong villain (not unlike Iron Man, now that I think about it) but it looks like this time the full power of Guillermo Del Toro's fertile imagination is being brought to bear, and I couldn't be more excited. The only comparable filmmakers in terms of visual luxury working today are probably Tarsem and Michel Gondry. Plus, Ron Perlman in a leading role is something I wholeheartedly support.

There are a number of short clips from the film you can watch here.

There are some amusing short ads they've released as well with Hellboy appearing in amusing juxtaposition with assorted television personalities.

Hellboy and Chuck
Hellboy Inside the Actor's Studio
Hellboy and Ghost Hunters

Who else is going to see it? All of you?

I'll go see it of course... Do I think that it was a necessary movie to make? No, i really don't. Do I think it looks kinda of kick-ass? Yeah, I do.
So, I'll throw down my $6 to go see it one afternoon, or hell, if it's at the drive-in with something that is equally as interesting sounding, I might toss out the extra 1.50 and see the double-feature (goddamn, I love the Drive-In...)

I really liked the first one and I totally understand what you said about not having a strong villain. I found the first one to be really anticlimactic, it just kind of fell flat and having that giant tentacle thing kind of made the villain very inhuman and unrelatable which in this film was not great.

That said, the sequel looks incredible and like it's actually had the thought behind it that the first one lacked. So hurrah! I didn't realise it was coming out so soon though. I guess I'm going to be going to the cinema a lot in the next few weeks.

I didn't like the first one, but it seems like the second one has had a lot more freedom to find its own, and the trailers for it look pretty amazing. I'm betting this is gonna be one of those few movies that manage to have a sequel better than the original movie.

Also, American Gladiators

After Pan's Labyrinth Del Toro can pretty much do whatever the damn hell he pleases.  Everything about the trailers have reminded me of Pan's....in a totally awesome way.  The first one was alright but I felt that he didn't have complete artistic control over the film and just wanted a nice break into American Movies.  This film seems to be directly from him and I'm SUPER-excited to see it.  It also doesn't seem to have the main white-guy from the first one...is he making a return or no?

I loved the first Hellboy, much to the chagrin of most of my nerd friends.  There was just something about that movie that clicked for me.  So I will absolutely go see the new Hellboy.

My mom and I caught Hellboy on FX some Sunday afternoon a few months ago and have loved it ever since. I feel as if we are going to be very out of place in the theater somehow.

I couldn't tell from the trailer and IMDB is telling me nothing - is David Hyde Pierce doing Abe's voice again? The one time he spoke it didn't sound a thing like him, and I will be most disappointed if it isn't.

It isn't. Being an Actor, Pierce thought it wrong that he should get billed for the performance that Doug Jones (I think that's his name) is giving physically, when he himself was only reading lines. So he turned down any offers to play Abe Sapien after the first movie (I don't even think he VAed in Sword of Storms)

I love the reference to the pancakes story in that audition video, because the pancakes story is essentially the greatest. So concise, so delicious. I'm totally seeing this Friday, probably gathering a party before venturing forth.

Gah, curse his sense of fairness. I love that man's voice more than life itself, but I see his point.

But yeah, this could pretty much not get more awesome. I am torn between being disappointed that it doesn't come out three days later on my birthday and being glad I don't actually have to wait those extra three days.

Not at all. It lacked the glaring flaws of the first film, particularly in the villain department. But it's still a Summer Action Movie like the first one. It's just infinitely better than, say, the Transformers movies.

yes and no. I was underwhelmed by the end of it but I'm conflicted because that elf dude kicked a lot of ass, and the monsters were cool. Unfortunately the first has fucking nazis and rasputin in it, so how the fuck are you going to compare to them?

Yes.  To much del Toro, not enough Mignola.

And what is with adaptations of books and the liek and the addition of stupid romace sub-plots?  Liz was like, eight, when she first met Hellboy.

I will say, Krauss was done very well.  a little hammy, but we can't blame Seth for that.

I enjoyed the fuck out of it.  It wasn't a subtle movie, but when was Hellboy about subtelty?  The only major complaint I had was the Calista Flockhart look-alike.  Everything else was fine.  Even Krauss' voice.  To Seth's credit, if you didn't know ahead of time it was him, you wouldn't have known it.  I didn't see anything wrong with it.

I got it right away, its more or less the voice of the goldfish in American Dad, which in my opinion is not a good show.

So I just got back from watching this, and I gotta say, not quite what I was expecting. There wasn't quite enough ass kicking in it for me, but it was great, cheesy, fun and very self-aware at times. the only problem was that when it came time for those "heartfelt" scenes the ham and other stuff mucked it up a bit so I really couldn't get a good empathy with the characters. But also the art direction was pretty fuckin rad.
