Which one do I get first?
« on: 04 Aug 2008, 11:10 »

Okay I'm looking at checking out a few bands, and I need some recommendations on which CDs would be the best one to acquire first.

Mogwai, God is an Astronaut, Sigur Rós, A Silver Mt. Zion, 65daysofstatic.

Didn't read the post carefully enough the first time.

Anywho:

For Sigur Ros, start with either Takk... or Ágætis byrjun.  As for Mogwai, a good starting spot would either be Mr. Beast or Rock Action.

Sigur Ros, I have trouble not recommending getting all of their albums. But Takk and () are definitely must haves. Horses in the Sky is a great starting album for Silver Mt. Zion.

best way to listen to mogwai from the first time is just to start from the beginning with Young Team, imo.

I suggest skipping Young Team entirely and getting Mr. Beast and Happy Songs For Happy People.  If you like those, you'll like everything else.

Get 65daysofstatic in order of release.  The Fall of Math is an amazing debut probably has most of my favourite songs of theirs.

Silver Mt. Zion is tricky because they started out sounding one way and have ended up sounding almost completely different.  The latest album is very rock-oriented, with loud guitars, and consists of four 13-16 minute stadium-rock level jams.  The first one, on the other hand, is practically ambient with very sparse and downbeat piano and strings dominating.  The three albums inbetween follow the transition from one to the other quite methodically.  It's entirely possible to love some of their albums and hate others, I suppose.  I'd get Horses in the Sky first, personally.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

I'd say 65daysofstatic is the most accesabile band there, as long as you get The Fall of Math. Lots of shout and loud rock (post-rock i guess) tunes. God is an Astronaut is kinda whatever I think and there are better band you can look at before you listen to them.

Now A Silver Mt. Zion is one of my, if not my favorite band. They can be quite difficult at first though, especially Efrim's vocals. Horses in the Sky is probaby the best entry point, but I imagine you could dive in with their latest, 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons too though. I wouldn't go earlier if you haven't listened to post-rock before. If you have though, their first album is absoutely gorgeus.

I have two Explosions in the Sky CD's and Godspeed You! Black Emperor's first CD. So I'm becoming  a bit more familiar with the genre.

I second that, get Ágætis byrjun.

I gotta say "This is our Punk Rock" is the best first listen for Thee Silver Mt. Zion, "Happy Songs for Happy People" is definitely the best for Mogwai, "The Fall of Math" is best for 65daysofstatic, "Takk..." is easily best for Sigur Ros and "All is Violent, All is Bright" is best for God is an Astronaut.
