Honestly? Yes, pretty often. Some people should just realize when they need to let a look go. It's for the best.

Perhaps, Alex, but whether or not jeans have run their course in terms of fashion wasn't really the point I wanted to argue. I was trying to point out that there is a definite precedent for practical protective wear designed for manual labour being successfully incorporated into fashion, and in the case of jeans becoming one of the most iconic and widespread developments in fashion in the last half a century. On the other hand, though, there is also a precedent for people finding that somewhat offensive or uncouth, so I guess it works both ways!

Work boots are more of a recent fad though, kind of the next iteration of timberland boots being adopted by rappers and "urban" culture

So your dislike it because of a lack of longevity and the recentness of it? Or because of the people doing it? Man I think I might be coming off as a bit of a dick here which really isn't my intention, you are of course completely entitled to your opinion, and I am genuinely interest in it, rather than trying to pick a fight. From my point of view, protective work shoes being fashionable is not that different to jeans, beyond the fact that it is less widespread and they have not had 50 years to permeate into our consciousness as a fashion item. It almost certainly is a fad, but jeans probably started that way, and I bet the kids who started it in the 50s were not all that different to "prissy hipster fucks" in certain ways. It's kind of how fashion works sometimes - certain people adopt old things as a new fashion, and the majority of the time it only has a limited lifespan (or is a fad) and/or never really expands beyond a certain group/subculture, but then once in a blue moon something sticks and becomes wildly popular, like jeans. I guess I just do not see the big deal, beyond fad-hating and general anti-hipster sentiment.

Plus I think Sam's new shoes are pretty rad.

I think you kind of misread/interpreted my original statement, I actually really like the boots and think they look great. I just have trouble reconciling seeing the same boots selling in jcrew that my dad wore for years and years. Jeans are a practical clothing item, their popularity is bolstered by the large middle class/youth culture that didn't exist when they were first invented- we don't have to dress up as much, and they're a casual pants option. I can't really see the same argument for boots, but I'm open to being convinced otherwise, because then I could just like the damn things and not be conflicted over it.

I don't really see the difference between them at all other than becoming popular at different times. Jeans were work pants and a lot of people 50-60 years ago wouldn't be caught dead out in public in them because they were meant for farming, etc. Steel toed boots and the like are pretty much the same - shoes meant for working in that have been working their way into everyday fashion. I mean, even Dr. Martens have a history somewhat along this line and look how popular those have been for the past several decades.

On the other hand, though, there is also a precedent for people finding that somewhat offensive or uncouth, so I guess it works both ways!

The point I want to argue has nothing to do with offensive or uncouth. It has to do with wearing something unusual without looking out of place or ridiculous. I submit that converting a traditional Inuit anorak into a bikini and wearing it to the supermarket would look silly as well as rather inexplicable to most observers. Now, I wouldn't argue that jeans are that ridiculous, but I have met young men who wear shrink-to-fit low rise girl jeans 24/7 in an attempt to actually speed up how quickly the jeans acquire holes and wear patterns. All things considered, that's a pretty specific look and you should proceed with caution when trying to pull it off.

I acknowledge that theoretically, nearly anything could work for someone in the right circumstances. David Bowie became a cultural and fashion icon by wearing things virtually nobody else on the planet should ever consider wearing. I might meet a man who wears skinny low rise girl jeans with an old-school '80s stonewash and actually end up being really impressed by how sharp he looks. However, I bet it's more likely that I'd want to pluck my own eyeballs out after seeing him instead. Fashion is a harsh mistress and many, many crimes have been committed against jeans over the years.

I think the first facist advice rule has been stated but: Never go up against a Sicilian when death is on the line, needs to be given out.

Also advice to any facists, go ahead with making your countries run faster etc. Just don't persecute anyone and you will be able to survive a lot longer and maybe even rehabilitate your (admittedly pretty stupid) philosophy.

Also, I don't get the deal with Jeans, they are something you wear to keep your arse from being on show. If you want to look smart, wear trousers. If you want to go to the gym wear tracksuit bottoms and if you want to go do ordinary things, wear Jeans.

I don't think I did misinterpret your original statement - the reason it confused me so much was entirely to do with the fact that you thought they looked great and yet still had a negative reaction to them. Yes, jeans are considered a practical and casual clothing, but don't mistake our opinion of them today with the attitude of the kids who first wore them - they were being deliberately subversive and nonconformist. To get somewhat back to the point though, I guess my approach to fashion is that, within reason, if it looks good then it works. I don't think that by wearing those boots Sam is belittling the efforts of those who have to wear them to work. I don't see them as being any less practical as casual wear than jeans - sure, steel toe caps are not exactly going to be useful every day, but then the resilience of jeans is hardly required for casual wear (god knows people spend enough time trying to destroy them).

And Alex, I knew you weren't arguing that it was uncouth or offensive, I was just clarifying my first post by that point. I agree with you that some ridiculous crimes have been committed against jeans, and that people wear some truly ridiculous things, but I still think jeans are great, when done properly, and maintain that fashion borrowing items that have practical use can work out pretty well. Sure, it can work out abysmally too, but as long as people don't deliberately try and wear holes into their boots or paint them pink or whatever, I think we'll be okay!

As for English socialism, that's old news. (PS don't let anyone tell you the Diggers were socialist, they are lying)

RE: Dress pants,
Honestly, there's not much of a difference when it comes to dress pants, they're mostly just different colors. You may find a couple different cuts, but you're not really going to find much variation when it comes to that sort of thing. Sometimes you have to suck it up and be an adult and dress in clothes you don't like.

RE: Fascism,
Honestly, I would say the best advice is to not enforce a mandatory belief and you can really muster a lot of people to your cause. If you don't persecute anyone, you'll really be able to get ahead in the game.

I don't know much about men's dress pants, so it may be the case that most cuts are pretty similar in menswear, but I doubt it.  With women's dress pants, there is most certainly a wide variety of cuts, drapes, styles, etc., as even GIS will attest.  Like any other women's pants, dress pants can be anywhere from super low rise to high-waisted, from boot cut to flared to peg-legged, made of cotton or polyester or hemp or wool or tweed.  Only then do you get into different colors and patterns (of which, of course, there are many).

I personally favor wide-legged pants with a medium rise--something like this, from Macy's, actually:

But that's just what works for me.  You've got to get in there and try stuff on; chances are you'll be able to find something flattering.

Wait, redwings are cool now? I guess I'll just never be able to associate redwings with anything but guys who wear hooded hunting jackets and a stained Vikings cap year round. And by that I mean 40+ year old men, typically construction workers or farmers. Like my stepdad. I mean, shit, he bought me redwings once 13-14 years ago. We went hunting.

I find that quite amusingly ironic, considering your username!

Uggs are what happens when there is too much upholstery fabric left over and no more sofas to be made. I'm sure they are warm, in the same way that Crocs are practical and easy to clean. That doesn't stop them being ugly.

I had a similar problem regarding formal wear when I finally got a job interview, and I ended up going in a very high-waisted olive skirt which made me look a lovely shape but didn't go with anything else I own. The only smart trousers I have are similar to Elizzybeth's except brown; I think straight-top trousers (no idea what the real name is) are the only option for formal wear because hipsters and low slung things just don't look as smart.

About the skirt bit, I have fairly chunky legs from hockey and being a bit chubbly and I find that skirts which finish past the knee, a little above half way down my lower leg, look great with small heels. Maybe that would work for you? Heavy fabrics in particular, like corduroy or velvet, in dark colours, can look wonderful and also might be a bit more memorable than just another pair of black trousers.

Uggs are pretty much unisex, just for your information. As warm as they are ugly but still, I don't think anything aside from the colour dictates which gender they are intended for.

Over here Uggs are the preserve of "ra's" the sort of people rich enough to afford daddy getting me a pony, and mummy getting me a house. Chinless wonders in other words. I am sure they are very comfortable, much like I am sure that burbery is a completly acceptable thing to wear, but I wouldn't because of the conotations they both carry.

You know, from shopping around for boots recently, I discovered that not all boots made by Ugg are ugly as sin. It just seems to be that the most popular ones are the ugliest boots they make. I wish people would realize that you can keep your feet warm by not wearing ugly Uggs and that you can be comfortable in shoes other than Crocs. I say this because I really like shoes and I don't want people abusing their feet by wrapping them in something atrocious.

Oh are we talking about uggs and crocs again? I don't want to get into this conversation or argument or whatever it is, I'm just posting for laughs.

This is what I wear at work.

The reasons I wear them are:
1) My previous boss bought a pair for all of the employees as a joke because she wanted us to match the chain's hideous Greem theme.
2) My other option at the moment is winter boots.
3) They were free.
4) Nobody actually sees me wearing them anyway because I spend most of my time at work behind the counter.
5) They are rather comfortable.

Your socks with crocs style is impressive Kris.

Why is it that approximately every 5 pages we talk about uggs and crocs?

(there are more subdued colours, but I love this colour)
(very comfortable, prettier in other colours)

PS Kris, excellent, I wear socks with my birks sometimes.

Birkenstocks are classics, rockable with and without socks.
I hope Crocs never make it that far. At least the foamy foot-wart kind that inexplicably escaped into the public.
As with NASCAR t-shirts and pee stains, whenever I see people rocking them I get the cold shivers.
