Okay, rather than make two threads, I'm combining two.

The first thread is just curiosity on my part - how many of your favourite bands still exist? Not as in, are still alive, as in are still recording/touring, and reformations count.

The other reason I started this thread was for recommendations. And not in the completely general 'LOL I LIKE THESE GUYS WHO SHOULD I LIKE?' way. I mean, what should I buy by these artists:

Thrice - I'm interested in their concept double album based on the elements but it seems very pricey, and is it a good place to start with a four-EP collection???
Led Zeppelin - Keeping in mind, I'm looking to only ever buy ONE release by Led Zep. I like 'Kashmir' and 'No Quarter.' Recommend me a Best Of.

Pavement's breakup never really saddened me per se, they put out enough great stuff while they were together that I'm too busy listening to Wowee Zowee, Slanted and Enchanted, and Crooked Rain to really care.

In all honesty, if you listened to them after hearing all the rabid worship that goes on, you'd probably just end up being disappointed anyway.

In all honesty, I think it's deserved praise.  As far as my memory serves me, I think they are more sparsely mentioned than, say, Boris, Slint, Bedhead, and Sloan as well as a couple of others.

Perhaps on this particular forum. But if you look on Pitchfork, for instance, the love for the album is completely insane. And when I mentioned that he might be disappointed I wasn't saying anything about the band's quality; all in all, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is probably my favorite album of all time, and it totally deserves most, if not all, of the praise leveled at it.

I hope that didn't sound like the rantings of a fanboy.

Well in the last year two of my favourite ever bands have kinda in a way reformed. I'm quite excited and so have listened to nothing but them for a few months (The Wild Swans & My Bloody Valentine). I do love my early 80s Liverpool scene indie - lots of bombast, portentous lyrics and sweeping synths. MBV just...changed my outlook on music and life, they're that good.

The name makes it uncomfortable to bring up with the uninitiated, for sure. But just give the In the Aeroplane Over the Sea a listen, just in case you find yourself liking them. Just make sure to not think about any of the praise, getting your expectations super high before listening to a band can cause you to hate them prematurely.
