Loathe

This should not really be read as to have a direct relationship to DynamiteKid's recent thread asking for musical opinions as to what people listened to when they felt the need to heal, though there is some admitted inspiration drawn from the idea of that thread. Mostly in the "Well he made a thread and no one complained hopefully no one will be terribly bothered by mine." And so.

What music do you listen to when you hate yourself? You could interpret it as something as a means of ceasing this feeling, but more what I have in mind is bilious acid-throated filth. I've been listening to some Ministry, Afghan Whigs, Orchid, Big Black...I dunno. I kind of want to hear something new, or to maybe be reminded of something, or see something I know re-contextualized to seem appropriate. Go into detail with your responses; it'll give me something to do.

Godflesh, Grief, Neurosis in people are shit mode. Arab Strap for 'shit, I really shouldn't have done that, I'm a bastard' mode. Normally it's a bit of Carpathian Forest for loathing others, or metal in general really.

Two words: Arab Strap
When you're wallowing in self-pity, stumbling drunk and making a fool of yourself and generally being a fuck-up after being dumped by your girlfriend, Arab Strap is the perfect soundtrack for your life. Most of their songs, rendered in true Scottish brogue, are perfect listening for when you hate yourself and nothing is going right and you want to know someone else feels that way too.

EDIT: Fuck! you beat me to it!

Radiohead's a natural choice, I guess.  And I spent several months earlier this year hating myself and everything I stood for while listening to a lot of Modest Mouse's This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About.

Pink Floyd's The Wall. Er, a couple of songs from Mellon Collie - X.Y.U., Fuck You (Ode to No One), and Bullet With Butterfly Wings come to mind.

But generally it's a bad idea for me to listen to music like that when I'm too angry. It...makes things happen.

I don't think I've ever "hated myself" in the purest sense. But if I did, I guess I might listen to some Nirvana or Pearl Jam, you know, angsty type lyrics.

Anything really loud. I find Gojira's From Mars to Sirius and anything by Meshuggah to be helpful.
Portishead is good too.

I tend to listen to some of the more aggressive offerings created by Sage Francis, the whole Bedlam in Goliath album by the Mars Volta, and most things by Saul Williams.

Really, whenever I hate myself or feel generally crappy, I listen to a lot of ambient stuff to help me relax. Stuff like Moby, Mindthings, Royksopp, Zero 7, Air, etc. If you want to go completely ambiant, listen to the Field.

Of course, it could just be me.

i usually force myself to listen to i hate myself when i do, in fact, hate myself.

i then listen to the lyrics and thus begins the slow transformation of my wallowing in self-pity to imitating the vocals of a song in a respectful, yet playful manner.

always turns my mood around.

If I really hated myself, as opposed to just wallowing in self-pity, I'd probably force myself to listen to Shania Twain, or Paris Hilton's album, or something like that.

For wallowing in self-pity, Spiritualised.

I think most people didn't shit on my thread because of circumstance rather than tolerance.

But when I'm flagellating, I usually listen to Slipknot (fuck you), Minor Threat, Black Flag, Lucky Nine, Dillinger Escape Plan.

I'm almost disappointed now that I feel pretty okay, because there'd be so much pain to explore with all of your suggestions.
