the Who
« on: 17 Sep 2008, 18:20 »

Out of all the iconic, essential, classic rock bands, I've never really got into the Who.  I'm slowly figuring out tho, that they're famous for a reason.  Pete Townshend really seems like an artistic genius.

Basically, what is everyone else's opinion on this band?  Where should i start with them?  I came here as opposed to wikipedia because i knew i could get a better outlook here.  Thanks in advance!

Start with the singles. Everyone likes My Generation. Everyone. Won't Get Fooled Again, Baba O'Reilly, Who Are You, 5:15 are all great classic rock tunes. Then bung on Who's Next and listen to it through. Then Quadrophenia, then Tommy.
Although I'm not sure of this "Make me like a band I don't like becasue I think I'm supposed to" mindset. If you can't get into a band you cant get into a band. Don't try to force your own musical tastes, you'll be unhappy.

Thanks a lot.  I know their popular singles, but after that i don't know.  And thats not really my mindset, i meant I'm interested in getting into the band, and i didn't know where to start.

I would get A Quick One first, then probably The Who Sell Out and Quadrophenia.

I'm not that big a fan of Tommy, honestly.

I don't know if you should start out with things like Quadrophenia..or even A Quick One.

My Generation (the album) is arguably the best place to start. You may want to pick up that and Who's Next? at the same time.

Who's Next.

I'm not even a big Who fan, but if you don't have 'Won't Get Fooled Again' in your collection somewhere, chances are I hate you.

Who's Next is definitely the best place to start out. It's probably got a lot more tunes that people can enjoy. And a few of their more famous ones.

Then I would move on to Tommy, just to see what they're actually famous for. It's not really an accessible album, as it's really just one long song. Also, don't watch the movie.

The original appeal of The Who, or at least a large part of it, was Pete Townshend's guitar sound.  Big chords with just enough distortion to smack you in the face without sounding like it's screaming or angry.  Loud and Proud.  Roger Daltrey's voice was made for Rock and Roll.  John Entwistle's bass and Keith Moon's drums were easily the biggest, boomingest rhythm section on the planet.  In short, everything about The Who seemed big-sounding, every song an anthem.

Then they'd turn around and hit you with a quiet, introspective tune with just voice and piano.  Since Townshend was not especially gifted on the keys, these tended to be very simple songs, but that was part of their charm.  He still knew exactly what notes needed to be there.

Some early Who can be seen as proto-punk ("My Generation", "Young Man"), full of angst and anger.  Then they got into concept albums (Tommy, Quadrophenia) and other musical explorations, including synthesizers (Who's Next) before most rock bands even knew what they were.  Townshend is a genius songwriter and their work was all over the place, but still somehow had a common grounding to it.  It took me a long time to figure out what that was, but one of their early boxed sets was titled "30 Year of Maximum R & B" and I realized that that's what's at the heart of their sound, and most really great Rock and Roll.  It's Rhythm & Blues with a heavier beat and a beefed-up sound.

Interesting point. R&B rock..sort of how Led Zeppelin is blues rock and The Doors could be largely classified as jazz rock (save for their last album.)

I think consensus will be with their straight albums (My Generation, Who's Next) first, then the concept-y ones (Tommy, Quadrophenia).
On a side note, the rock operas just don't work at all if you listen to them like you would a modern album (being listening to the singles a lot and the filler not much in multiple sittings while something else takes most of your focus). You need to sit down and listen to the thing straight, taking it in. Oh, and pause it halfway through, take the CD out, blow on it, and put it back in where it finished. For authenticity's sake.

I love the Who. But it bothers me when Pete Townshend is hailed as an amazing guitarist, as a guitar hero - he was not! He was a basic guitarist who released great songs however simple. My favourite song (one of them, at least) is "I Can See For Miles" but the guitar solo is...one note. Played a lot. Does that really take so much skill?

The other thing that pisses me off is that Townshend and Daltrey are still together as "The Who" despite the fact that the two best players in the Who are now dead.

An amazing guitarist doesn't mean being able to play immensely complicated solo's. It means being able to play simple things and make them sound good.

Also, what Townshend and Daltrey do with their band is up to them. If they still want to play songs that Pete wrote, while still being able to make new music its their choice. Many bands' line ups have changed over time.

Also, I've seen them, and they were fairly good.

Pete's gift is choosing exactly the right notes and chords for the situation, not blazing fast chops.  The one-note solo in "I Can See For Miles" is pretty simple, yes, but it's the way he plays that one note that sells it.  There are syncopation and dynamics, and I'm pretty sure he knew exactly what he was doing.  It seems to me that the idea was to see if he could play a one-note solo and play the hell out of it.  Considering that this was 40 years ago, it's not bad.  And again, the point is that it's what is right for the song.

Still, don't sell Pete short on chops.  Listen closely to some of his acoustic solos during otherwise electric tunes.  "Who Are You" for example.  The bridge between "Overture" and "It's a Boy" for another.  Those are some smoking solos.

I pretty much agree with you about Roger and Pete calling themselves The Who, when half of what defined The Who is dead.  Yes, it's up to them what they want to do with the name, and to many, The Who is about Pete and Roger.  But without John's aggressive bass and Keith's thunderous drums, it really doesn't sound anything like what you associate with The Who.

I think Led Zeppelin did it right.  When John Bonham died, Robert Plant said that Led Zeppelin was over.  They might find another drummer, subsets of them might still play together (and indeed Robert and Jimmy have done a lot), but they would not call it Led Zeppelin, because Led Zeppelin was those four guys, and one of them is gone.

Am I the only one who finds most hardcore fans of either The Who or Led Zeppelin are really arrogant about stating how much better both bands are than everything else?

On topic, though I'm not much of a fan of The Who, I agree with the person who said to check out their "Live At Leeds" album, it would give you a good idea of what they were all about.

That applies to virtually any band ever, especially when they're from the sixties and seventies. I mean God, Pink Floyd are one of my favourite bands but I still find this attitude among Floydians.

Nah, I don't think I have a favourite band. But Pink Floyd is definitely in the top 10 (top 4 if last.fm is anything to go by). Band bashing and exclusive Band heralding is kind of silly.

But man, are they good or what? The Who too.

Correct.  The suits implored them to perform as Led Zeppelin to honor one of the guys who made their career possible in the first place, and they agreed.  After nearly 20 years of standing their ground on this issue, they did it for a good cause.  I certainly don't put this in the same category as the blatant cash-grab that many bands are guilty of.

There are rumors of a tour, which are being denied, as Plant isn't on board for it.

Has anyone here ever listened to the Creation? They started up around the same time as the Who and have a sort of similar sound. I think Pete even asked the Creation's guitartist (whose name eludes me at the moment) to be the Who's second guitarist at one point but it never panned out.

So uhhh.. if you like the Who, you might want to check them out.

Quadrophenia is such a damn good movie.

I mean, really it's kinda shitty when you try to actually watch it and make some concrete sense of it. But it's still so good. The bathtub scene is great.
